Soak in spectacular city views and experience luxury
living on three levels in this absolutely gorgeous
executive bungalow in southwest Calgary.
FEATURE PROPERTY
Offering an amazing 4,375 sq. ft. of living space this exceptional bungalow in the desirable
Prominence-Patterson neighbourhood located off Sarcee and Bow Trails showcases four
bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms on the main and two lower levels.
“This is an exquisitely finished dream bungalow with spectacular, unobstructed downtown
Calgary views and the way the property is designed it allowed for the creation of two lower
levels,” says Realtor Ross Pavl, Re/Max House of Real Estate.
“You’ll be impressed with the architectural details, built-ins and fine finishing of richly-
toned woods, stone and tile throughout this home that creates a warm and inviting living
space with classic, elegant style,” he says.
The bungalow presents an eye-catching exterior with expansive stone across the front,
snow melt stone driveway and side-facing attached triple garage that is heated, insulated
and has a shop with work bench, cabinets and direct access to the first lower level.
Stepping inside, the stunning foyer presents a fabulous stone feature wall, distinctive
tile floor and towering 20-ft. ceiling with stylized painted beams that flow in a decorative
pattern throughout much of the main living area.
The height of the ceiling ups the wow factor in this home, and ensures plenty of lower and
upper windows that bathe the space in natural light. The Great room is highlighted by a
two-way fireplace anchored by floor-to-ceiling pillars and around the opposite side are stairs
leading to the lower levels surrounded in a glass and wood railing for a contemporary look.
Across from the great room, the chef’s dream kitchen serves up a massive level island
with seating, top-end built-in appliances and cabinetry to the ceiling. The formal dining
room provides substantial space for entertaining and the entire rear of the home features

BUSINESS PROFILE
by MICHELLE HOPKINS
Wallace Fleming Design & Renovate
For Marilyn and Jerry Aquilini moving out of their
1961 bungalow was the last thing they wanted.
But their home was looking rather dated so
they went to HomeStars - a company that
connects homeowners to the best rated
contractors - to find a renovator.
The couple hired Wallace Fleming Design & Renovate. “We looked at three different
contractors but as soon as we interviewed Vaughan Wallace, we had instant rapport,”
says Marilyn. “We called a number of his clients and every one of them was extremely
happy with his work.”
The home had always held a special place in the couple’s heart – originally owned
by Marilyn’s parents; it’s where she grew up. They left the same footprint but wanted
to create an open-concept home.
“We went from a three bedroom home to a two bedroom. I now have a beautiful
ensuite with walk-in closet,” says a happy Marilyn. “They took it down to the studs, so
basically we have a brand new home.”
She went on and on about how professional and exceedingly accommodating both
Vaughan and his foreman were. “It came together really well. Jorme was excellent to
work with and he went out of his way to keep the project running smoothly,” Marilyn
adds. “To see the changes to the house I grew up in; it didn’t feel like the same house.
Wallace Fleming gave us exactly what we wanted.”
The couple was so happy they’ve recommended the general contractor to their
son’s friends.
Brad Levang is the company’s operations manager. He was initially brought in to
help take the company to the next level. “I’m a financial business consultant and my job
was done in September,” he explains. “The fact that I’m still here is testament to the
integrity and work ethic of Vaughan. We both believe that a company can only thrive
with honesty, integrity, trust and excellence in all facets of the build.”
The company was recently awarded the distinction
of being Baeumler Approved - a unique program that
certifies Wallace Fleming as a highly skilled general
contractor by veteran contractor and HGTV host Bryan
Baeumler.
Wallace Fleming Design & Renovate has already
earned its place alongside bigger name Calgary
renovators.
“I think what differentiates us from others is that
we refuse to low-ball our pricing,” Vaughan says. “We
price based on the scope of the work required and
make sure that there are no surprises down the road.
We provide the right price and that is extremely
important to me.”
The right business model, the right tradespeople,
the right products and customer satisfaction equals a
winning combination.
“If there is a problem or we missed something we
will fix it,” he stresses. “It is critical for me to make
sure each homeowner is happy, because our name is
our reputation.”
Vaughan comes with a wealth of business acumen.
As a past project manager with a large digital marketing
firm he specialized in communications and marketing,
skills that help set Wallace Fleming apart from the
crowd.
Let Wallace Fleming exceed your expectations.

WHEN IT COMES TO KITCHEN ESSENTIALS, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM?J: For a bit of luxury, I would say a wine fridge. I pretty much bought my house because it came with one. I also think a great big kitchen island is so important for everyday cooking, as well as entertaining.
COUNTERTOPS MAKE A STATEMENT, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE COUNTERTOP MATERIAL? J: I love Carrara marble, but it comes with a cost – and you have to live through the patina growth stage! it stains and scratches easily so don’t expect it to stay in the condition it came in. Beyond that, find a similar option like Caesarstone (there is a Carrara knock off that I have in my home) or there are even some great plastic laminates that look like marble. But one thing is for sure – light and veiny all the way, no black granite!
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN STYLEJ: All white with some gritty elements, such as exposed beam, an industrial chandelier, large windows and open shelving. Oh, and a few French baguettes in a basket on the counter!
IF YOU COULD COOK WITH ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE?J: My grandmother, she is my muse. We cook together all the time, and she is so inspiring.
CHINA OR STONEWARE?J: China. I love collecting vintage pieces with a bit of meaning behind them.
YOU LOVE TO ENTERTAIN AND THROW BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING PARTIES. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP ENTERTAINING TIPS?1. Making food ahead of time – it is a huge sanity
saver. 2. Use rental companies for tables, chairs,
glassware, utensils and linens – it is a lot less expensive than people realize.
3. Being present in the moment. I can spend so much time preparing and hosting the party, that sometimes I forget to enjoy it. Do your hosting, and then be resolved to enjoy yourself, too!
WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION WHEN PLANNING A PARTY?J: I love my cousin Tori’s blog, fraichenutrition.com – she’s a dietitian and an incredible cook, she inspires me with her euro-rustic approach to food, which I love. And, in terms of decor, I look to Monika Hibbs. She has beautiful style.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT ENTERTAINING?J: I love to treat people. I love having guests come over and serving them the best food I can make, putting on the best party I can. I want people to leave having had a really great time. That makes me really happy.
RED WINE, WHITE OR SPARKLING – WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE?J: All of the above! If I had to choose I would say red.

For a bit of entertaining fun, try theming your next party. These are Jillian’s top five faves, but there are so many fun options and creative ways to theme foods, beverages, party decor – and even dress – that you can let your imagination, your foodie instincts and your sense of style lead the way!

She’s entertained us on TV – from her fabulous designs on Love it or List it Canada to her winning appearance on ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. But it’s her spectacular style and gorgeous designs that makes this interior designer a regular feature on decor shows and in the press. Also known for her love of entertaining, we caught up with Jillian to talk about some of her favourite elements for fabulous feasts and fêtes.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SERVING PIECE?J: My gigantic wooden cutting board – you can literally serve anything on it. I do have a bit of an obsession with vintage trays and platters too.
SERVICE – FAMILY STYLE OR FRENCH?J: Family style. I always have friends and family coming in and out and sitting down and eating whenever/wherever. This makes it so much easier on me and is no fuss or stress!
INTIMATE DINNER PARTY OR COCKTAIL MIXER?J: A bit of both! I like to have cocktail parties but with snacks and appies. But I do love dinner parties. I’m a bit of a foodie!
HOW CAN YOU USE EXISTING DECOR TO MAKE A PARTY HOSTED AT HOME, COMFORTABLE AND STYLISH?J: Using your kitchen island as a serving station or buffet is a great idea. Bring your indoor furniture outdoors, and create an interesting set-up to stage your food (weather pending of course!).
HOW DO YOU MAKE A SPECIAL OCCASION EXTRA SPECIAL?J: Fresh flowers. Flowers can make any occasion extra special.
WHAT ARE THE TOP ENTERTAINING TRENDS THIS SEASON?J: For decor, an all white palette is still big this year but mixed with rustic elements and metals, such as serving food on an antique cutting board. And for food, the mini trend (think one-bite apps) is still going strong!
YOU ARE KNOWN FOR YOUR FABULOUS SENSE OF STYLE. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO DRESS WHEN YOU ENTERTAIN?J: When I throw parties, I usually pick a theme and get everyone to dress accordingly – which makes for great, fun photos.
1. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Fishing in the dark2. Oldies3. Anything Country4. Taylor Swift’s new album 19895. Anything I can dance to!
Music can help to set the mood – from soft and romantic to dancing beats – and everything in between. Music can work with the theme. It can change over the course of the evening to build things up or wind it down. Play it softly in the background when conversation is the focus, but don’t be afraid to turn it up!
1. Stampede, of course! I haven’t missed may in the last 15 years.
2. Melrose Patio. Their ginger beef – miss it so much!3. Bermuda Shorts days. Oh life was so wild back then,
not a care in the world!4. My first home purchase was a condo in Shawnessy.
Everyone thought I was crazy for buying a 700 sq. ft. condo for $75K. I sold it a year later for $130,000 and its probably worth $250,000 now.
5. Being a manager at 4th St Rose in Shawnessy. Then I switched over to California Pizza Pasta Kitchen. (And then it closed… whoops.)
6. How could I forget – the original cowboys.

Planning a home renovation is exciting, yet with so
many things to consider it can also be an overwhelming

Since 2004, the company has built a reputation for attention to detail that is unsurpassed.
The right materials, expert craftsmanship, and professional service to create extraordinary
beauty and excellence are the hallmark of every Astoria renovation.
“We have the time in our building process to do this, because we only take on an average
of 12 renovation projects per year,” says Lisa Stinson, the company’s Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer, adding the company has the distinction of being certified as an HGTV
Bryan Baeumler approved builder/renovator. “This enables Astoria Renovations to maintain a
standard of quality that is difficult to achieve when constructing larger numbers of renovation
projects.”
Astoria understands that for most homeowners, their homes are their biggest investment.
That’s why the company approaches every renovation, big or small, on a philosophy based on
transparency, honesty, trust and a passion for building excellence. It’s no wonder satisfied
homeowners bestow glowing testimonials.
One pleased client says: “Our renovation was a dream, not a nightmare. Once we understood
the process and developed a strong customer relationship we sat back and relaxed knowing
that we hired the right team to re build our home. It was an amazing experience.”
Specializing in major renovations and additions, complete home renovations and re builds,
Astoria partners with its clients to refurbish their homes and living spaces. They create and
build unique designs for each remodeling project, all within a client’s pre-determined budget

works directly with customers to ensure their plans are tailored to their vision.
“Our interior designers can assist you in personalizing your home to create that custom
look and feel that makes your home uniquely yours,” says Stinson.

Red Door Home Living offers one of the most unique collections of statement pieces, upholstered furniture, bedding and more, that you won’t find anywhere else in Calgary.
Gail Greenough is a discerning client who knows first hand how distinctive the home furnishings store is. Similar to the popular HGTV series, Love it or List it, the decorated athlete entrusted her home for seven weeks into the hands of the store’s owners Dan and his wife/interior designer Lori Lee.
“Lori really took the time to listen to my thoughts and a mutual respect and trust was born,” says Gail.
As the only North American female to win the coveted World Show Jumping Championships in 1986, Gail knows about putting faith in a professional. Her trust paid off
- her Evergreen Estates home morphed into an exceptionally stunning residence.
When she returned from L.A., Gail was amazed and ecstatic. “There were many ‘OMG’ moments,” she says.
“I had asked for some new furniture but I was ill prepared for how beautifully it was staged.”
Gail went on to say: “The Red Door team took care of absolutely everything. Many of the decisions I left to Lori as she is the professional. She understood my taste and proceeded beautifully down to the smallest detail. I still walk around my house and am completely in awe.”
Lori has an innate ability to source inspirational, exciting and often refreshing pieces that you can’t find
anywhere else. Her passion for creating and transforming environments was cultivated during a successful, professional career that spanned years in the interior design industry – first doing commercial design work in Los Angeles before settling in Alberta.
Lori worked on many prestigious projects, including the Alberta Legislature, Capital Health, Church of Latter Day Saints (Regina Temple), and many restaurant and office restorations. Then, Lori began working on residential projects and discovered a passion for home renovations.

LLCL_Feb_2015.indd 23 2/5/15 7:28 PM
Soon, the couple started their own company – Red Door Renovations & Design.
In late 2013, Red Door Home Living was born. It was a natural evolution for this talented couple.
Under their vision, Red Door Home Living is changing the city’s design landscape and Lori is fast becoming known for creating comfortable, understated sophistication in both transitional and modern styles.
Her goal is to provide an inspiring environment to create a shopping experience that is exceptional. She has built a portfolio of high end suppliers from all over North America including exclusive lines by leading brands such as Norwalk and Gabby Home.
“Our objective is to offer unique styles and pieces that bring character to your space and we do it using our team of qualified designers on staff,” she says.
Lori went on to say good design comes in many forms. “The key to a well-designed room is one that consists of a cohesive scheme and pieces that speak to each other but not necessarily match,” she explains. “If everything is in the same colour or all of your furniture matches, the eye skims the room and there is nothing to absorb.”
Lori manages to stay current on new trends without compromising on good design. Two new looks to embrace this year are wallpapers and metals. “We’ve done a feature (wallpaper) wall in almost every renovation over the past few months,” says the award-winning interior designer, adding she loves working with Candice Olson design wallpapers. “It adds another dimension to a space. Then, layer it with artwork or mirrors on top for a striking look.”
A desire for more eco-friendly space and a renewed interest in the past is fuelling this year’s interior design
trends. Pantone has declared 2015 the year of Marsala – a robust and earthy wine red that adds elegance to any room. For that matter red in every hue, from deep plum, to persimmon, pink to soft blush, embodies that sophisticated earthiness.
“Blues are also big again this year with deep blues in cobalt, lapis and a little robin’s egg to add something fresh to your space,” she says.
When it comes to fabrics, don’t fear patterns – incorporate exaggerated floral, Aztec prints and geometrics into your décor.
“A mixture of different textures adds depth to your space.”
In addition, metals such as chrome to gold, copper and warm brass are infused in tables, lighting and accessories. “We are also seeing a lot of bar carts in design for 2015… Mad Men style layered with decanters, vases and even table lamps,” Lori says.
Red Door Home Living is a unique one-stop shop for mid to high end transitional and contemporary furniture and décor, as well as for residential renovations and design services. For more information, call 587-352-6322, email info@reddoorhomeliving.ca or visit www.reddoorhomeliving.ca.

Rarely does such a unique property come to market. Nestled in the heart of Mount Royal and minutes to downtown, this beautifully crafted, De Jong-designed home offers the discerning buyer all the luxury one would expect from a newer estate home in this prestigious community.
FEATURE PROPERTY
“This custom-built home is on an estate-sized lot that is 175-ft. deep and presents an old
charm exterior of brick and sandstone,” says luxury home Realtor Ray Riley of Royal LePage
Foothills. “This property features exceptionally high-quality finishing and detailing including
10-ft. ceilings, custom millwork and walnut hardwood floors throughout the main level.”
Offering more than 5,000 sq. ft. of elegant living space, this two-storey residence has four
bedrooms each with their own full ensuite, main-level powder room, a fully-developed lower
level and a three-car garage with in-slab heating including the driveway.
From the impressive entry, visitors are drawn into a stunning, 25-ft. high foyer on the main
level. This leads into a spectacular chef’s kitchen with an expansive granite-topped island,
huge walk-in pantry and high-end stainless steel appliances including a Wolf range and Sub-
Zero fridge. The kitchen is open to a spacious dining area and Great room ideal for entertaining.
From the Great room, double French doors open to a large, brick patio walkout, which
leads to one of the most sought-after features – a rare and private, south-facing inner-city
sanctuary complete with mature trees and a beautiful English country-style perennial garden.
A formal dining room is highlighted by a barrel vault, coffered ceiling, while the living
room is warmed by a fireplace topped by a beautifully-carved wood mantel. Through sliding
french doors, the living room extends into a light-filled den with french doors opening onto
an inviting front balcony.

LLCL_Feb_2015.indd 31 2/5/15 7:28 PM
2) How did you get started in the construction industry?I’m an interior designer by trade. I love construction and renovation, so it was just a natural progression. I’m super-passionate about it.
3) What’s it like as a woman to break into the construction industry? What challenges did you face?It has been very difficult; a fight all the way. This is a very male-dominated industry and, although there are more women working in it than ever before, we’re very much in the minority. I had a male client say to me, “You do my design and I’ll get a male contractor to do the work.” There is definitely a preconceived notion that this is a male industry and that there are some things woman can’t or shouldn’t do; that is something we need to change and show that we can. That’s why awards are important – because they prove that we can do it.
4) What’s your approach to construction projects? We’re very pragmatic. We follow a set beginning to the construction process, we work closely with clients to make sure we understand what they want and we’re upfront about the process so clients are involved and aware. Because of my background in design it absolutely plays a major part in the work we do; I make sure projects begin with great design. I don’t want to just get through a project; I want to create something that is functional, innovative and that the homeowner ends up with something they love.
5) What’s the most unique item/feature that you have ever put in a home that you were renovating? An exotic dancer’s pole. The client wanted it because she taught dance classes and it was fun.
6) What is the biggest construction project you ever undertook? We’re currently doing an 8,000-sq.-ft. log cabin from scratch. It’s a new build and we’ve been doing more new builds recently.
7) Who had the most influence on your life?My parents. My mom always said I could be whoever I wanted to be and encouraged me, and my father was an entrepreneur who had his own business, so the two of them really made me who I am.
8) On the lighter side, what do you prefer a book or a movie?Book. I like ones that I don’t have to think about, but in saying that my favourite book is Good to Great by Jim Collins, it’s business related, so I guess my tastes run the gamut.
9) What’s your favourite vacation spot?Sipadan in Borneo – it’s amazing. It’s secluded, peaceful, serene, and there’s no work or phone.
10) What do you like to do for fun?I love motor biking. I have a Ducati Monster 800 and driving it makes me feel free; I find it very relaxing and it takes the stress away.
10 Questions with Shannon Lenstra
Shannon Lenstra is owner and president of Kon-strux Developments, which has
been in business since 2007. Her innovation and quality workmanship has lead Kon-strux to be selected as a finalist for 12 Calgary SAM Awards, winning two for Best Kitchen Renovation (one over $90,000, one under $90,000), and an award for Best Bathroom Renovation. The renovator has also been a National SAM Award finalist in the Best Kitchen Renovation category for the last two years, and is a finalist again this year for Best Kitchen Renovation and also for Best Whole House Renovation $250,000 to $500,000. Kon-strux also just won the 2015 Best of Houzz Service Award and earned its second consecutive Best of Houzz Design Award for 2015. Luxury Living posed our Top 10 Questions to this award-winning renovator.
RENOVATORQ&A
1) What do you love most about Calgary? The people and the feel. Calgary is appealing because it’s a vibrant city yet still has that small-town atmosphere – warmth and kindness and the people are friendly. It also has great entrepreneurial spirit with wonderful groups for business and woman entrepreneurs.

One luxury you can add to your home that allows you to relax outdoors in comfort without being bothered by pesky bugs, wind, sun and often even rain and snow is retractable motorized screens.
Ron Belt, president of Phantom Screens of Southern Alberta, says their Executive screens, which are motorized remote-controlled screens for large openings, “are a luxury item that we’re putting on a lot of high-end homes in Calgary and on acreages in Springbank, Bearspaw and De Winton.
“By installing these large powered screens you can extend the amount of time you can enjoy the outdoors because they not only block out mosquitoes and other pests, they block the wind
and sun,” Belt says. “Because there are different levels of mesh available, some can even block a majority of the rain and snow so you can sit outside more often. Having the screens often becomes the difference between using your deck or not.”
“When the screens are down you can also have your gas heater running and enjoy the outdoors longer into the evening and the in early spring or fall, because the heat is more contained,” he adds.
The screens are “absolutely amazing… it’s like having a sun room,” says Maggie, who with husband Larry, had three Executive screens and one permanent screen installed last summer at their estate bungalow in southeast Calgary.
“It’s probably one of the best things we did in the house,” she says. “In the summer we are able to use our deck all the time. Our home backs onto a lake and there are a lot of bugs so having the screens helps keep them out, as well as dust from construction.”
“We keep the screens down most of the time; we’ve kept them down all winter and we don’t have snow out there on the deck,” she adds. “It’s a luxury item that is a must have and we love it.”
Aside from screening in decks and patios, Belt says, more people are installing them over garage doors “because they want to use their garage as a patio or a man cave.”
He notes that a new feature for Executive screens called SMART STOP will be standard on all units for 2015 and beyond. It’s an anti-block device that automatically stops the screens while they’re being lowered if there’s an obstacle in the way of the slidebar such as a chair, child’s toy or bike, thereby preventing the mesh from rolling back on itself.
Executive screens are custom fit and can be as large as 25 ft. wide with a 16-ft. drop. They come in a variety of types and colours and can be custom coloured including a wood grain finish to fit any exterior – so they’re attractive as well as efficient.
Another popular upgrade for luxury homes is the Serene screen, Belt says. These go over windows and are available with sunscreen mesh so “they can keep your home cool in the summer reducing the need for air conditioning, and warmer in the winter saving energy costs. They also block UV rays, reducing the damage sunlight can do to fine furniture and hardwood floors.”

LUXURY LIVING SPRING 2015 [39]
LLCL_Feb_2015.indd 39 2/5/15 7:28 PM
Mission has been described as one of those neighbourhoods that is totally self-sufficient; meaning that you never have to leave to get exactly what you want.
Several schools are in the immediate area including Catholic elementary and high
schools, Montessori pre-school and other nearby public schools. Mission is flush
with parks along the riverside.
The Mission area is a thriving and booming area with many of new condo developments. Currently the rental market has few vacancies, however potential homeowners have a fair selection. A mix of new architecture and 1960s walk-ups populate the area. The neighbourhood also has incredible heritage
homes that keep the integrity and personality of the area alive.
Many of the residents are health-focused, affluent foodies who love to spend time outdoors and welcome ‘mom & pop’ shops to the neighbourhood. You’ll see many dogs enjoying long walks or cozying up to their owners outside a Mission café – this neighbourhood loves pets and is part of their active lifestyle. Mission often sets trends for other Calgary neighbourhoods thanks to 4th Street’s fantastic mix of retail and restaurants.
Mission is an area full of culture, character and vibrancy. Always bustling with pedestrians and cyclists, this is an incredibly active
community. A nice mix of architecture keeps the neighbourhood interesting. An outdoorsy community, the Elbow River keeps residents active with rafting, running, cycling and even fishing. There is a big foodie lifestyle in Mission as well with plenty of
great restaurants and eateries – even more opening everyday.

The simplest outdoor structure, the pergola, provides these things. The word pergola comes from the Late Latin word ‘pergula,’ which refers to a projecting eave. A pergola extends over a patio to create a shaded area. They can be an extension of your home or any other building, or they can be freestanding. They can also be used to create shaded walkways or as a link between two pavilions or gazebos.
Pergolas consist of vertical posts or pillars that support pen rafters on cross beams and may have lattice upon which you can grow and train various kinds of vines. The vines close in the rafters, helping to create shade. You do not need to plant on the pergola if you want to keep the area below sunny or if you want a more formal or contemporary look. Pergolas can also be used to cover spa areas or sitting and dining areas. If you add heavy draperies to the sides you can cozy them up as well as block the wind to extend your evenings in the garden or to create shade on a hot day. Pergolas can be added to almost any garden. In a small space we
simply scale back the size and height of the posts and beams to make them fi t in with the scale of the rest of the outdoor space.
Another type of garden structure is the gazebo, which is also known as the pavilion. A gazebo has a solid roof fi nished with shingles to match your home and therefore they offer protection in rain. Pergolas and gazebos can be constructed from a variety of materials including cedar, pressure treated lumber, maintenance-free PVC products. Cedar is the most popular choice here in Calgary, and can be allowed to age from its rich reddish-brown to grey or else can be sealed.
Pressure treated wood (PTW) has a greenish stain to it which some people do not care for. It can be stained after one year of exposure to the elements, but then you have the upkeep of stain every few years, much like a PTW deck. I have one of the maintenance-free PVC types and the only issues I have with it are that I have to wrap the posts in twine or cord to get vines to cling and I cannot add the draperies I so love. The draperies add interest and colour even if tied back all the time. They can be made more inexpensively from drop cloths, canvas, or heavy cottons if you want to try them and see how you enjoy them before having them made from all-weather fabrics. Again, if you add the all-weather draperies to the sides you have a cozy, private retreat no matter what the weather and can extend your outdoor season!
Better still for longer use is a three seasons room. To do this you can either close in your existing deck with windows, screens, and a roof that is attached to your home, or you can build a free-standing room off in the rear of your property with lots of windows and screens, so you can enjoy spring through fall protected from the weather but still feel like you are in the garden. In a three seasons room, you can also surround

Garden structures add so much to your outdoor spaces that they should be included in every beautiful landscape! If you have a large property
you can have several different types of garden structures, and even the smallest garden area can have a simple structure. They are usually architecturally pleasing, and, depending on the type, they can extend the season, add vertical planting area, and clearly define outdoor rooms.

yourself with tender or tropical plants that cannot live in the garden or an open pergola.
A sunroom, particularly a four seasons sunroom, gives you the most usage if you have the room on your lot and your budget will allow it. A full addition sunroom adds to the square footage of your home and the usable space you have in your home while giving you the outdoor feel! If you have a glass roof you can enjoy the sun and stars all year round - a real perk, considering how short our summers are!
And finally, if you are a die-hard gardener, you can make your four seasons sunroom into a solarium where you garden all year. Another option, if not adding a sunroom, is to add green houses and potting sheds as freestanding structures to the rear of your lot. I love a potting shed that has a relaxation or reading area in it, to sit among pots and plants with the sun shining in and relax! If you are an artist or writer, a freestanding studio in your garden adds interest and provides you with a valuable and inspiring work area.
Just remember, whether adding a freestanding structure or a four seasons sunroom addition, to make them match the architecture and design of your home so everything flows and does not look like it has been added or does not belong. Whatever type of garden structure you add to your home or landscape, it will be sure to bring added value and years of pleasure to come, just for you!
