As I am writing , I am thinking back to this time last year, and I am smiling inwardly. Last February we had just been blasted by that late January blizzard and were digging ourselves out from over three feet of snow. This week, we are looking ahead to warm weather - 56 degrees on Wednesday. While I know we have many snow lovers in our midst, I must tell you it’s been great to have outdoor recess and a continuous stretch of learning for our students. As we enter into February, here’s to hoping that Mother Nature will continue to cooperate with our school calendar. So, Mother Nature, if you are listening, the request from LBMS is a bit of snow, a bit of cold, and a smooth (and quick) transition to spring! Continuous learning is all-encompassing, involving more than academics. I would like to make you aware of our most recent efforts to develop and grow student leadership. Over the MLK weekend, 8th grader Bea Ogden represented our school at the annual service and launch day for Project 351. The mission of Project of 351 is to unite diverse 8th grade service Ambassadors from every city and town in the Commonwealth for an inspirational year of community service, leadership development, and enrichment. On launch day, Bea worked with her fellow Ambassadors to provide service at local organizations, including Pine Street Inn, Greater Boston Food Bank, Inquilinos Boricuas en Accio n (IBA), Cradles to Crayons, and Service Village with Meals of Hope and Y2Y Cambridge. This spring, Bea already has plans for a service project within our own local community. Amazing. And, just last week, seven of our 6th and 7th grade students attended a Peer Leadership training at Bridgewater State University. The students worked with trainers from MARC to develop positive peer leadership skills. Upon their return, the group developed a plan to further strengthen and support a positive social climate in our school community. I would like to thank Mrs. Hutton for her mentorship of Bea with Project 351 and her involvement with our burgeoning 6th and 7th grade student leaders. Looking ahead, February will be a busy month. Please mark your calendars and join us as a school community to support the culmination of the basketball season with final games for girls and boys basketball, a Principal Chat on February 5, and our school-wide spelling bee on the evening of February 8. Yours, in gratitude,
Laura Friend

Important Calendar Information: Spring State Assessments, MCAS As we head into this spring’s state-wide assessment window, please be reminded that there have been
some changes to our state-wide assessment. The grades 3–8 English Language Arts and Mathematics
will be augmented with a limited number of PARCC items for spring 2016. The state intends that these
changes will help make statewide comparisons easier and will offer students the opportunity to
experience PARCC items while assessments for 2017 and beyond are being developed. The test design
for grade 10 has not changed. Click here for more information about this test development.
Please mark your calendars for the important MCAS testing dates below. Thank you for your
cooperation in ensuring your child’s attendance during these testing windows. More information to
follow.

2016 LBMS Geography Bee Winner Congratulations to our three Geo Bee Finalists: Boden Aurin, Ryan
Kolakowski, and Lucas Halbrooks. After multiple competitive rounds, Bodie
outpaced his fellow students by answering a variety of tough questions
about U.S. and world geography and was crowned 2016 LBMS Champion.
We wish Bodie the best as he moves to the next phase of his geography
journey which includes a qualifying test for the state Bee.
12 Angry Men and the Judicial System
The 8th grade spent much of January learning about courts, trials,
and juries in an interdisciplinary unit for Social Studies and
English Language Arts classes. After reading the play 12 Angry
Men and watching the film version, and
researching about the trial process, the unit was
capped off with an interactive presentation from
the Massachusetts Office of the Jury
Commissioner. Students learned more about jury duty, trials, and how jurors are
selected. After the presentation, the students were able to participate in a simulation
of the jury selection process and a mock trial. The students found the presentation
both informative and entertaining--ask them what they have learned about jury duty!
Rising 9th Grade Open House for Nashoba Regional High School The high school will be hosting an information night for rising 9th graders and their parents at the high
school on Wednesday, March 2nd from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, starting in the high school auditorium. This
night will be an opportunity for rising 9th graders and their parents to see the high school, hear about
academic programs and extracurricular opportunities, meet department heads, and tour the building.
It will also be an opportunity for parents to learn about the high school course registration process.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey
On March 8, 2016, Luther Burbank Middle School will be administering the Youth Risk Behavior
Survey to all 6th and 8th grade students. This is an effort that the NRSD participates in every two
years with other schools in our area. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey Project was started in 1998
under the guidance of Emerson Hospital. The project is modeled after The Center for Disease
Control and Prevention's YRBS. The results provide a look at our student's healthy behaviors as
well as risky ones. These results guide our efforts to educate our students, in partnership with
you, to help them develop good health habits that will lead to a long and healthy life.
In preparation for the administration of the survey, representatives from Emerson Hospital and
health education coordinators from the eight participating districts, meet to update and refine the
YRBS and the process for its implementation and analysis. In addition to NRSD, the other seven
participating districts include: Harvard, Acton-Boxborough, Maynard, Groton-Dunstable, Littleton,
Westford, and Concord-Carlisle. Currently, The NRSD School Nurse Leader, Donna Lindstom has
represented our district on the current planning team. In past years, Interim Superintendent, Dr.
Curtis Bates, and Lancaster School Committee member, Kathryn Codianne, were involved in
planning committees on behalf of the school districts that they were employed at the time.
To learn more about the NRSD results from the 2014 YRBS and how our students compare with
other students across the state, click on this link.
Please be assured that all information that students provide is anonymous and un-identifiable.
Letters will be emailed to all parents of 6th and 8th grade students this week. Parents without
email access will receive a paper copy in the mail. As always, you have the right to opt your child
out of this survey without penalty. If you have questions or would like to discuss this further,
please feel free to call me at 978-365-5629.
Thank you, Mrs. Perkins
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED!
Are you interested in helping out our school? Have some time to help with projects, copying,
assembling hands-on materials for our students, or lending an extra hand in a classroom? We need
you! Many of our Burbank teachers would benefit in different ways from an extra pair of hands. If
you are willing and able to volunteer, please email me directly at lfriend@nrsd.net. Thank you!
Leftover Craft Materials for Projects Do you have any leftover craft materials from
projects that you are willing to donate for student use? Donations of items such as: pom poms, felt,
pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, clay, poster board, glue sticks would be gladly appreciated. Please
bring them to the LBMS office. Thank you, in advance, for your continued support of our students.
Student Writing
This month we highlight an 8th grade student writer, Alec MacDonald, who writes to
commemorate the life work of David Bowie.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF DAVID BOWIE
David Robert Jones or as we know him, David Bowie, was born on January 8, 1947 in Brixton,
England. David grew up listening to rock music, such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and of course
the king, Elvis Presley. In the early 60’s, Bowie went to art school where he met three other guys
who shared the same musical interests as him. They started a band called The Riot Squad and he
changed his name to Davey Jones. The band went on to release a few singles that went on the
charts, but they disbanded in 1967. Two years later, Bowie released his first single titled “Space
Oddity”. The song went number one in the UK charts in 1969, and many consider the single his big
break. For the first time in two years, Bowie was known to the public again. He changed his name
for the second and last time to David Bowie. 1972 and 1973 were also huge years for Bowie
because he released the album “Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars”. He created an alter
ego named Ziggy Stardust who came from Mars and played guitar left handed, among other things.
The fans loved Ziggy. Even though it was just Bowie in makeup, he acted like a completely
different person. Ziggy “died” at the end of 1973 when the tour ended. Also, in 1972 he made the
album “Transformer” with the former Velvet Underground member Lou Reed. In 1975, Bowie
collaborated with John Lennon and produced the rock song “Fame”. In 1977, he released “Heroes”,
a number one hit. In 1984, he starred in the movie “Labyrinth” directed by Jim Henson, in which
he sang the soundtrack “Underground” and he played the role of the goblin king. In the 90’s, Bowie
didn't have as much success with songs like he did in the 70’s. One song that stood out on his 1997
album “Earthling” was “I’m Afraid Of Americans”. Skipping ahead a few years to 2016, he released
his last studio album “Blackstar” which came out on his 69th birthday. It is an odd album with the
genre Experimental Jazz and Hard Rock. Two days later on January 10th, Bowie died of cancer
which he hid from the public for 18 months. I think that he could not have left his fans (including
me) a better present to remember him by than “Blackstar”. But look at how lucky we are to have
lived in the same time as David Bowie and how lucky we are to experience his wonderful music.
My personal favorite song by him is “Life On Mars” released in 1971 off the album “Hunky Dory”.
David will be forever missed and will go down as one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. I
guess you could say that the Starman went back to Mars.

Is your child struggling in school? Do you suspect your child could have a learning or
behavioral disability that may require him/her to receive additional support services at school? Is your child currently on an IEP or 504 and you’d like a better understanding of the laws and
process that the NRSD Special Education Department follows to provide support services to your child?
This workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities under the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Massachusetts Special Education Law. It is designed to help parents learn how to be effective partners with their child’s school to decide their child’s eligibility for special education, and to plan, make decisions and monitor their child’s

Award winning Canadian singer and songwriter, Nancy Beaudette, and writer
and playwright, Paula Castner, have combined their talents to produce a whimsical play
about teenage angst and the role of choices. Ebullient, thoughtful songs and embellished,
realistic characters make for an entertaining amalgamation.
Four high school students – Josh, Marissa, Brian, and Kelly – wrestle with
dating, making friends, desires versus limitations, and self-esteem. All the while, the
Fairy Godmother has brought the Evil Queen to watch the teenage dramas unfold as part
of the Evil Queen’s rehabilitation for putting Snow White to sleep. Josh, Marissa, Brian,
and Kelly wish their lives could match the fairy tales they grew up listening to, and the
Evil Queen blames Snow White for all her problems. How all five come to learn lessons
about living will regale audiences of all ages.
