success. There were around 200 participants, mainly professionals

and executives from diffe rent companies and organizations both in

In cooperation with the Zhejiang SC ience and Technology Ministry,

Zhe jiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute of Hong Kong Univers ity

of Science & Technology was es tablished in June 2004 by two

parties' efforts in one yea r. A long-term and stable relationship can

be maintainecl between HKUST ancl Zhejiang government in terms

of scientific ancl technological association.

Loca ted in Yuhang Economic District in Hangzhou , ZAM I aims at

developing i ts business in the Huadong area. With the support

from I-I KUST, the Zhejiang Science & Technology Mini stry ancl

Yuhan loca l government, ZAMI is expected to be a leading

Institute in three to five yea rs time. In addition, ZAMI al so

ca rri es the res pon sibilities for promoting sound manufacturing

cl es ign and the development of Zhejiang PI'ovin ce from th e

technologica l, economic and social perspectives.

Resea rch Frontiers is a news letter of the Resea rch Grants Council of Hong Kong, China. It introduces major resea rch accomplishments of funded proj ec ts to the publi c. Issue 9 of Research Frontiers featured Dr. Raymond Cheung's research on 'Algorithm to help Hong Kong keep competiti ve edge'. He was the only HKUST proFessor fea tured by th e Resea rch Gra nts Council in this issue.

Dr. Fugee Tsung has completecl his term as the Chai r of the Ouality, Statistics , ancl Reliability (OSR) sect ion at INFORM S. OSR has bee n growing rap idly in size and stature since 1998 and is now one of the most active subdivisions at INFORMS.

Scholarships to Outstanding IEEM students Scholarships at HKUST al'e cles ignecl to enco urage honor

students with outstanding academic performance. Th ere are

many scholarships ava ilab le at HKUST, especially to students in

oUl' department.

Thi s year, yea r one stud ents wi th exce ll ent academ ic

performance in A-Leve l and HKCEE were awa rded with IEEM

scholal'ship 2004. Th e scholarship is offerecl by the IEEM

Depal'tment and is onl y for stud ents in OUl' department.

Honored students not only received scholarships in cash, one of

them was also granted a pa icl internship opportuni ty working

with Prof. Mitchell Tseng. It was a va luab le experience for

stuclents to ga in work experience during the ir stuclies.

Pur thermore, DHL has also offered the DHL Logistics Scholarship

specifica lly to our BEng IELM students. It aims at awarding

14th ACM - HK Collegiate Programming Contest A Team from IEEM , CS and CPEG of HKUST beat all '19 other

teams to become the champion team of the 14th ACM -HK

Collegiate Programming Contes t held on June 12 2004. Jiqing

Tang, (IEEM MPhil ) is one of the winning team members. They

useel about '12 hours to complete six programming problems,

ju st two minu tes less than the fi rst runn er-u p fro m Th e

Uni versity of Hong Kong. They will pa r ticipate in the As ia

Regional Contes t which will be held in Ehime, Beijing, Bombay,

Kanpu-Ko lka la, Dhaka, Shanghai, Manila, Seoul and Tehran, to

pursue further championship.

Fantastic Job Offer to IEEM Students Jiqing Tang is not only a winner in many competitions, but also a

winner in the job market. He is go ing to work as a System Software

Engineer for NVIDIA HK in Silicon Va lley, CA. after his graduation.

"My major responsibility includes developing and maintaining the

software drivel' of the company's graphics card. I got the job oFfer

after I did a summer in ternship there. It' s my dream job and I feel

thl'illeel to join NVIDIA. NVIDIA is a great company anel has a

wonderful working atmosphere" said Jiqing Tang.

Ma ny of the tEEM graduates of HKUST have joi ned large

multinational corporations after graduation. Jiqing is one of them.

"Tang Jiqing got a job offer with a very good remuneration package.

This is indeed a fantastic offer." said Dr. Andrew Lim, Jiqing's

Apart from this, there are a lot of great job opportunities for our

sWdents. Although Hong Kong Disneyland is not yet opened, they

have alreaely recrui ted some of our graeluates for the pl'eparation of

their grand opening. They are working in different areas such as

Industl'ial Engineering, Merchandising anel 'vVorkForce Planning.

Bes ides, Hong Kong Disneylanel plans to provide summer in tel'llship

opportuni ties fo r OUI' undergraduate students. This is a valuable job

experience For them.
