Early lifeGottschalk was born in New Orleans, in 1829. His mother was creole and father was jewish. He started playing piano at a very early age when he moved in with his maternal grandmother in Haiti.

He had his first performance in a informal hotel at the age of eleven.

Early life (cont.)At the age of thirteen he and his father left the rest of Gottschalk’s 12 siblings back home and sailed from the US to Europe realizing it would be best if young Louis got a good classical training if he were going to continue music as a career. Sadly he got rejected from the Paris Conservatoire.

CareerAfter Gottschalk, age fifteen, came back to the U.S. from Europe he started touring all through Central and South America. By the time he was thirty two, he was one of the most known composers and pianist in the Western Hemisphere and Australia.

He often wrote romantic songs.

He was often seen on the covers of magazines like Vanity Fair as well.
