The Steps To Long Division
• Divide- the number inside the house with the number outside of the house
• Multiply- the number outside of the house by the number on top of the house
• Subtract- the number inside the house from the number below the inside number
• Check- to make sure the difference (the answer to a subtraction problem) is smaller that the number outside the house
• Bring Down- the next number in the dividend to add to the ones place in your sum
• Repeat- all the steps as many times as needed
1st Step- Divide• In the first step
you divide the number outside the house called the divisor by the number inside the house called the dividend.
12
144
12 goes into 144 12 times so you put 12 on top of the house.
12
2nd Step- Multiply• Then you multiply
the divisor by the quotient the number on top of the house, also the answer to a division problem.
12 144
12
-144___
12x12=144
3rd Step- Subtract • Next you subtract
the dividend by the number underneath. The answer you get is your remainder. If the answer you get is zero the there is no remainder.
12 144

-144___

4th Step- Check • Check your
difference to make sure it is lesser than the divisor. If it is not then you did something wrong.
12 144
12
-144___

5th Step- Bring Down• There is nothing
left to bring down.
12 144
12
-144___
6th Step- Repeat• You only use this step when you
have numbers left over• In the next few slides I will show
you what to do if this problem occurs
1st Step- Divide
8 197
8 can’t go into 1, so it has to know go into 19.
How many times does 8 go in 19? You can figure this out by multiplying. 8x1=8, 8x2=16, 8x3=24. It can go in 1 time because the answer you get afterwards is 8. And 8 can go into 19. But, sense 8x2=16 it can also go in 2 times; and you want it to go in as many times as possible with going over the number (19). So, that’s why it can’t go in 3 times because 8x3=24 and 24 is greater than 19. 24>19.

2nd Step- Multiply

16
Then you multiply the divisor by the quotient
And then you get 16
3rd Step- Subtraction
8 197
2
16Now you
subtract 16 from 19
-______
And then you get 3

4th Step- Check
8 197
2
16-______
3
3 is smaller than 8. So far we got the equation right.
5th Step- Bring Down
8 197
2
16
______
37Now you bring down the 7 in 197 and you get 37.
6th Step- Repeat

1.1. Divide Divide How many time does 8 go into 37? 4.
3. 3. Subtract Subtract 37-32=5.
4. 4. Check Check 5 is smaller 8, so we’re good. 5<8.
2.2. Multiply Multiply 8x4=32.
32
5. 5. Bring Down Bring Down there is nothing else to bring down so you’re remainder is 5.
6th Step- Repeat

All Done!• Now you know how to long divide,
let’s go over what we’ve learned!
REVIEW!!!
