travel adviceNext time you ride the Metro, remember you don’t need to swipe your ‘Nol’ card when changing between the green and red lines. You simply need to change platforms.
Kids go crazy
Mirdif just got a whole lot more fun thanks to the new social meet-up – Mirdif Kids Club.Mirdif Kids Club is a weekly affair where kids up to the age of six meet and mingle over a fun session of storytelling, arts ‘n’ crafts and nutritious snacking. The group is the brainchild of Mirdif mums - Wajiha Azeem and Nadia Mushtaq.
“I’ve known Nadia for almost three years now. We met as a result of our kids who are enrolled at the same school and are in the same grade and section; so we used to organise play dates way before Mirdif Kids Club happened.
Our focus is Mirdif, not just for the kids of this district but also for their mums”, says Wajiha.
The after school club generally meet indoors due to the heat but plans to move its activities to the parks in Mirdif as and when the weather permits. If you’d like to be part of this new group - call Wajiha on 050 1040165
Dubai motorists can now get a 30 per cent discount on traffic fines accumulated before September 10.
At the beginning of August, Lieutenant-general Dhahi Khalfan Tamin, Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief announced the discount, now approved by the Executive Council of Dubai Police, with details emerging last week.
The discount will run until December 11, but motorists must pay their fines in full.
The offer extends to fines on all UAE-registered vehicles, in addition to vehicles from gCC countries, as long as the fines were issued in Dubai.
You can pay your fines in Traffic Departments in Bur Dubai or Deira, in any police station, vehicle registration offices, via automatic payment machines and the internet, Emirates Bank and RTA offices. Check your fines at www.dubaipolice.gov.ae

mad for shoes?Shoe guru Steve Madden has recently opened its seventh store in the UAE at Mirdif City Centre. With 1500 square feet of retail space, and vibrant interior decoration, the label is now exhibiting its latest
fall collection for men and women.Fashionistas such as Lady gaga and Rihanna are known to be die-hard fans of the trendy brand, which also has a stylish range of handbags and accessories.
FIneS For no IDif you’re Emirati, get your skates on and register for the national population register and an Emirates iD card by the end of next month – otherwise you’ll get fined! if you’re an expat, it might be wise to grab an iD card, as you’ll be fined if you’re caught without one after May next year.
However, take note that a fee will also be charged to ex-pats renewing their residence visas without a valid Emirates iD, as of January 1, 2012.
UAE Nationals face fines of up to AED1000 for not registering. Children under 15, both nationals and expats, will be exempt from fines until October 2012.
Existing iD card holders have until October 31 2011 to renew their expired iDs. Those which expire after October 31 will have 30 days to renew their card.
The closest Emirates iD registration centre is located behind Al Rashidiya Council Building. Contact: 04 2845252
When Dubai schools opened their doors on September 11, there were a few changes.
The Food Control Department of Dubai Municipality has sent out a
new guide to health and nutritional requirements for school canteens – describing everything from what food can be sold, to hygiene and safety standards while preparing
meals. Meanwhile, the RTA has issued new safety rules for school transport - school buses now need to have partial window tints and CCTV cameras.

Why did you decide to pursue a career as a locksmith?A locksmith’s job is providing a service to the community, and to help people cope with, and overcome, difficult situations. i like helping people out in their time of need and serving the community. Since an emergency can happen at any time, i run a 24/7 mobile locksmith service.
Where did you get your skills to pursue such a challenging job?i received most of my training in Syria, that’s where i worked for four years and eventually parted ways to start my own business in the UAE, two years ago.
Any heroic or intriguing stories from your job?An interesting experience occurred with a family in Dubai at 3am in the morning when a child got locked inside a room. i was able to open the door and rescue the kid, within three minutes of my arrival. Another similar incident was – when a six-month-old infant got locked inside a car near Mall of the Emirates and i had to get him out.
Have you ever lost your keys? Yes, i’ve lost my keys! Anyone can lose their keys at any given point in time. i once lost my car keys and i had to call my staff, as i didn’t have any tools on hand. One of the men showed up and cut the keys at the same time. Within an hour, i had a new one.
What was the most challenging lock to crack?Almost all safes, doors and car keys have different codes and are tricky to decode especially the ones with intricate detailing that require re-programming and specific targeting.
If a person is locked out of home, are there any legalities that you need to follow?Regardless of whether it’s a car, home, or a friend’s car – it’s mandatory that people provide relevant documents of ownership, registration, driver’s license or a contract proof of ownership or lease before or after the job is done.
How many ‘lost key’ cases do you cater to on a weekly basis? The number of lost key cases varies every week. i would say on average - around 35.
What do you like about your job?My job is unique; it entails technology, programming and i like the fact that i get to face a new challenge almost every day. i have to continuously keep myself updated with technology and new locking systems. i’m always learning something new - whether it’s a new system or the software.
Lose your keys? You now know who to call - 050 8552088

As the new school year begins, many families are
facing the reality that their child could use some extra help to be successful this year. While looking on Dubizzle, google and the community boards in Spinney’s, you will notice that there is no shortage of people offering to provide tutoring (tuition) to children in everything , such as Arabic, English, Maths and Science.
Before entrusting your child’s academic future to someone, it is important to ensure that person is best qualified and will personalise the tutoring to fit your child’s individual needs.
Sylvan Learning, a leading
provider of tutoring and supplemental education to students of all ages and skill levels, offers seven easy tips for parents to use when choosing a tutor:1. Make sure the instructor is licensed or certified. Teachers will need the proper qualifications to assess, diagnose and tutor to a child’s weakness. in Dubai, KHDA approval ensures accountability. You will also avoid the potential legal problems that may come with hiring unlicensed private tutors.2. Look for an instructor with experience teaching children the same age as your child. 3. Request an assessment.
An individualised analysis of a student’s strengths and weaknesses can determine a child’s unique needs and help set goals. Also, insist on progress updates as a child passes through each step of the learning programme.4. Define your goals. Are you trying to keep your child from failing? Are you looking to challenge a child who is already doing well in school? Are you looking to strengthen your child’s foundation by teaching previously missed skills? Be sure your child’s instructor understands your objectives and is skilled enough to meet them.5. Find an instructor with specific
expertise in the subject of your choosing. Just because someone is a maths genius, does not mean he is qualified to teach other subjects.6. Ask the tutor how they will help your child master a specific skill. A good instructor will require that a child learn a specific skill before advancing to the next academic level. Find a teacher who will work with parents and teachers to create an individual programme.7. Ask prospective instructors for references and testimonials from previous employers. Working with a reputable company will provide you the reassurance that your investment of time and finances is well spent.

ruba Siddiqui hails the Ceaser at MCC’s More cafe. One fine afternoon, i decided to try More Cafe, situated in the new block of Mirdif City Centre. Having heard so much about this pretty little cafe, i couldn’t wait to check out their menu and the food all my friends seem to be raving about. The ambience made you feel all comfy and right at home. The staff was pleasant and polite and the crowd was just right – no loud teenagers around. i heaved a sigh and decided i was definitely getting old. The impressive-looking menu (it was quite fancy – handmade paper and stuff) listed lots of
healthy salads, sandwiches, mocktails and desserts. Not a big health freak, i have always found burgers and fries far more tempting than salads and fruit juices. Nevertheless, having heard so much about this little joint, i made the incredible decision – drumrolls please – of ordering Chicken Caesar Salad! The first thing that struck me, as the kind waiter brought my salad, was not the fact that in the next two minutes i am actually going to eat salad – and not a burger – for lunch, but it was the fact that the salad had the most irresistible presentation you can come across.
it was the kind of presentation that would make anyone switch to salads from burgers. Three bites later, i decided it tasted almost as good as it looked. i wasn’t ready to go – it was time for dessert. And so i ordered
a piece of chocolate cake. The portion was generous and the taste was very rich. i wished, however, it wasn’t so super sweet. Everything else was perfect and i happily left the cafe, with plans of returning again very soon.
