It’s amazing how many artists sound great on records but in person they leave much to be desired and some are just terrible. Hot record acts are in abundance, but a majority of them fall by the wayside in a couple of years. On the other hand, acts that can sustain in clubs for years are ararity.
The Gaylords fit both categories perfectly. Initially, they scored heavily as one of the hot- test record acts in the business, then their ver- satility shot them to the top in the night club field. They are considered one of the best club acts around, playing to packed houses wher- ever they appear. |
The talents of Ronnie Gaylord and Burt Holiday are many, both are excellent singers and articulate musicians. Their impersona- tions are flawless and their instinct for comedy leaves nothing to be desired. The Gaylords are one of the few acts whose in-person dynamism comes across on records. This, their first al- bum for TIME RECORDS was recorded live at Harvey’s Wagon Wheels in Lake Tahoe. It is a marvelous example of singing at its best, from the soft tones of the beautiful Italian ballad ‘““DORMI DORM?’ to the wild rendition of “OH BOY.”’
The Gaylords’ versatility was never more realized than on this album. Country classics like “IT’S YOUR WORLD,” “OH LONE- SOME ME” and “GOTTA TRAVEL ON” re- ceive authentic interpretations, while that haunting standard from the off-Broadway clas- sic “The Fantasticks” —“‘TRY TO REMEM- BER”’—is one of the high spots in the album.

The folk scene is represented with “IF I HAD A HAMMER” and “COTTON FIELDS,” while The Gaylords score in the pop vein with “MY COLORING BOOK” and “EIGHTEEN YELLOW ROSES’’—two of the finest songs written in the past few years.
The only adverse criticism I have heard about The Gaylords is from club owners and that is, that the boys are so good that the cus- tomers stay for two and three shows so the turnover is rather small. The reason for this being that The Gaylords have such an endless amount of material, they rarely repeat the same songs or bits, not to mention the fact that their act goes over with everybody.
It’s a long way since “‘From The Vine Came The Grapes,”’ but this is one act that has con- sistently improved and their outstanding vo- calizing on this album will attest to that. Add to this a variety of impersonations and power- ful comedy routines and you have what many hail as one of the finest acts in the country.
