Liturgical Calendar, Mass Intentions, and Readings From the Pastor’s Desk The Twentieth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
August 16, 2020
Rembrandt
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the
Lord,
Today our Church celebrates the
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
A belated thank you to everyone
who has been assisting with the
cleaning and sanitation of our church
building after each Mass.
Thank you, too, to the Junior
Knights of Peter Claver and their
adult leaders for assisting with the
maintenance and care of our parish
grounds.
Thank you to everyone who
came out and assisted with our
second Tuesday-of-the-month
Produce Pantry giveaway. This
ministry is made possible with the
help of Catholic Charities and the
Free Store Food Bank.
Let us all remember that
Christianity calls each of us to treat
each other as brothers and sisters in
the Lord. In the midst of this global
pandemic, related deaths, and our
social upheavals, we should be
reminded that the devil has been truly
busy. However, there are those
among us who seemed to be filled
with such bitterness, negativity,
jealousy, and envy. Their anger
reminds us that we have much to take
to the Lord in prayer. Yet alternately,
we all have many great and good
things for which to give glory and
praise to our loving God.
The focus of the readings today
reminds us that God wants all people
to know His love and mercy.
Let us keep each other in our
prayers.
Yours in Christ,
Father Rey
Pastor

Reflection: August 16, 2020 Kyrie Eleison
Isaiah reminds us today,
in our time of trouble: Observe what
is right, do what is just. Even with
outsiders. Jesus, today, is in lands
foreign to the People of
Israel. Although he first ignores her,
he helps the foreign woman calling to
him in her need. Kyrie, eleison. He
hears and acts. The Lord does have
mercy.
• Who are on the outs with me; how
can I show them kindness?
• How will I act in right and just
ways this week?
• Because God constantly shows
mercy to me, how will I be
merciful?

St. Vincent de Paul Weekly Reflection The Gospel today announces that the kingdom and
salvation are for all people. It is our persistent calling out
to Jesus and our faith that count, for Jesus always
responds. With love for your neighbors who have
nothing, look around your house to see what furniture,
household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul. As a volunteer with SVDP, you can help others in a way that
will fit into your busy life. Vincentians are volunteers who are people just like you
from all walks of life—those who want to help their community by giving their
and talent for the greater good. Please call Robert or Felicia Johnson (513) 254-
0471) or Linda Knight (513-344-3907) for more information.

Your Prayer Can Unite the World
Now, more than ever, the world needs Christians united in prayer. What might
happen if every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati would pray just one minute
more than they already do, every day, for the specific intention of peace, justice and
goodwill? There’s no better time to start this life-changing habit Please: (1)
visit www.PrayAMinute.com to commit to praying one minute or more every day from
now until January 1 specifically for the intention of peace, justice and goodwill in our
country; and (2) share this opportunity for spiritual renewal with your friends and family

YMCA Issues Statement
The COVID-19 pandemic is changing the way the Y serves communities.
Beginning Saturday, August 1, 2020, the Y will temporarily suspend fitness
operations at the Carl H. Lindner facility and increase services critically needed in
the West End community, such as high quality childcare, pre-kindergarten and
welcoming new community partners at the site.
“For over 175 years, the Y has pivoted services to serve the current needs of
the community. We are doing that again. The Y is more than a place to just
work out; our mission to strengthen spirit, mind and body,” said YMCA of
Greater Cincinnati President and CEO Jorge Perez. “Since the pandemic began,
we have distributed 112,000 meals to those in need, provided essential workers
childcare and day camp to over 1,200 children, kept in contact with over 9,000
isolated seniors, worked with 4,500 at-risk students and kept 100,000 plus
individuals active with live and on demand programming they can access
anywhere.”
Perez said that members of the Carl H. Lindner YMCA can transfer their
membership to any Y in the city, including the nearby Central Parkway YMCA.
This is the second local YMCA that will serve as an Impact Center to serve the
individualized needs of the community where it is located. The Melrose YMCA
in East Walnut Hills is also a Community Impact Center, in partnership with a
variety of non-profits including Easter Seals and City Gospel Mission.
Spam Alert: Please note that Father
Rey’s email address and contacts have
been hacked. Someone is asking
individuals to support Father Rey, in
helping a woman who is a cancer
patient. They are asking individuals to
purchase $300 in I-tunes gift cards and
to take photos of these cards—and
then to email the gift card code number
off of the back of each gift card.
Please note that this is Spam! Father
Rey says he “prefers cash!’ “Let us keep
these individuals in our prayers. As we
all know, that the Devil is always busy,”
he said. Please call the parish office if
you have any questions.
Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our
community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may
they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close
wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May
these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who
believed. Amen.
Hear Our Prayer
Prayer for Vocations
Almighty Father: You have created
for us some definite purpose. Grant
us the grace to know the path You
have planned for us in this life and
to respond with a generous “Yes.”
Make our archdiocese, parishes,
homes and hearts fruitful ground for
Your gift of vocations. May our
young people respond to Your call
with courage and zeal. Stir among
our men a desire and the strength to
be good and holy priests. Bless us
with consecrated religious and those
called to a chaste single life,
permanent deacons, and faithful
husbands and wives, who are a sign
of Christ’s love for His Church. We
commend our prayer for vocations
to You, Father, through the
intercession of Mary our Mother, in
the Holy Spirit, through Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Remembering Our Parish in Your Will As many of you know, every year St. Joseph receives
bequests from parishioners’ estates. We are most
appreciative for these generous gifts to our parish. Gifts
such as these help us to continue to share God’s word
through our various worship programs and ministries.
We are often asked how to make such a bequest, and it is very simple. When you
call or visit your attorney, discuss adding the following language to your will or
codicil: “0.00 or 0 % of estate to be distributed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, currently located
at 745 Ezzard Charles Dr., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. If the church is not in existence at my
death, the distribution to it shall be made to the successor institution into which it was merged. If
there is no successor or merged institution, the bequest shall lapse.”

Wylie Gene Howell: An Extraordinary Life (February 7, 1950—July 13, 2020)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on
there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will
give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2
Timothy 4:7-8
God certainly smiled on us when he brought Mr. Wylie G. Howell to the
doors of St. Joseph Church over thirty years ago! Through his music and by
his steadfast example, he gave each of us the tools to live a better and more
purposeful life in service to the Lord. He was the true embodiment of what it
means to love the Lord, love his fellow man, and most importantly, to use his
earthly gifts to make the world a better, brighter, and more beautiful place. Of
course, he was one in million and irreplaceable in every sense of the word; yet
his story, his legacy, his music, and his brilliance will live on in our hearts as we
move forward in these challenging days.
In the spirit of preserving the special moments of his life, we would like you—his parish family, friends,
colleagues, and those whose lives have been touched through his musical gifts and generosity of spirit—to offer
your thoughts about this remarkable man. What he meant to you, what his music meant to you, how he helped you
or taught you, a wonderful moment in time spent with him, or photos are those reflections we would like you to
share with us. In this way, we can compile his life story beyond just dates and data, which we hope to collect for a
future memoir for us all. You may send your thoughts through (1) email at church@stjosephcincinnati.org; (2)
mail to the parish office at 745 Ezzard Charles Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or (3) put your note in the
collection basket at church. Thank you for helping us with this endeavor. If you have any questions, please call the
parish office. (513) 381-4526.
