Literary terms week 3
1.point of view: point of view point of view point of view point of view point of view Definition: the
perspective from which the writer tells the story (1st, 2nd, 3rd person; omniscient, limited omniscient).
Sentence: Totally Crushed is written in 3rd person limited point of view.
2.pun: pun pun pun pun pun Definition: a play on words involving the use of words with similar sounds
but different meanings (collar, color), words with 2+ meanings (plain), or words with the same sound
but different meanings (sun/son). Sentence: Puns are very annoying.
3. repetition: repetition repetition repetition repetition repetition Definition: repeating a word or
phrase, or rewording the same idea. Sentence: There is a lot of repetition in songs.
4.rhyme: rhyme rhyme rhyme rhyme rhyme Definition: similar or identical sounds near each other
(usually in two or more lines of poetry). Sentence: Dr. Seuss writes stories in rhyme.
5.rhythm: rhythm rhythm rhythm rhythm rhythm Definition: a mood or effect in a text created from
repeated elements (could be euphonous, cacophanous, staccato, etc.). Sentence: Songs and poems have
rhythm.

There is a setting n every story.
7.simile: simile simile simile simile simile Definition: a similarity between two objects or ideas, using like
or as (and sometimes than). Sentence: “Your face is like the sun.” is a simile.

alone on stage to allow his/her thoughts and ideas to be conveyed to the audience. Sentence: A
soliloquy is when a character speaks their mind honestly.
9.stanza: stanza stanza stanza stanza stanza Definition: a group of lines in a poem or song that
constitute a division (in prose: paragraph). Sentence: A stanza is like a paragraph in a poem.

Definition: A character who does not change at all, or who remains almost entirely the same,
throughout the course of a play or story. Sentence: In The Smurfs Gargumel is a static character.
11.symbol: symbol symbol symbol symbol symbol Definition: something that stands for itself at a literal
level but which also suggests something (or several things) at the same time; frequently a concrete
object or animal that represents a quality or abstract idea. Sentence: A heart symbolizes love.
12.theme: theme theme theme theme theme Definition: central idea. Sentence: The theme of Toy
Story 3 is “Even though you may feel forgotten, you are valuable to someone.”
13.tone: tone tone tone tone tone Definition: the mood of a work (often several in one work).
Sentence: Tone is created by images in a poem.
