What is Linux?

oLinux is an operating system (OS), similar to Windows from Microsoft and Mac OS from Apple

oThe kernel, at the heart of all Linux systems, is developed and released under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone.

o It is this kernel that forms the base around which a Linux operating system is developed.

oLinux has been adopted worldwide primarily as a server platform.

oIts use as a home and office desktop

operating system is also on the rise. oIts user base in Third World countries has

increased with the popularity of affordable laptops AKA NetBooks

oIt's free and open source software (FOSS). oIt’s customizable.

oThere are plenty of existing templates that you can access for free, or you can create your own.

oWith Open Source, if a particular project or support company dies, all the code remains open to the community and people can keep improving it.

Who Uses Linux?

oFrom embedded systems to supercomputers, and have secured a place in server installations.

oPDAs, video game consoles, portable music players, and mobile phones.

oUse of Linux distributions in home and enterprise desktops has been expanding.

oThey have also gained popularity with various local and national governments.
