The existence of a host of legal regulations and technical guidelines also underscores the fact that machine and component manufacturers must pay attention to the issue of securing loads.
Since the end of 2009, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been binding in European law. It contains the statement „Machinery, or each component part thereof, must be capable of being handled and transported safely...“, thereby obliging the manufacturer to construct a product that permits transportation.
In Germany, paragraph 1, section 22 of the national road traffic act stipulates that when loads are being secured, „state of the art rules shall be observed“. These rules refer above all to DIN and EN standards, and they
Machinery Directive 2006/42/ECalso encompass guidelines issued by the Association of German Engineers (VDI). The scope of paragraph 1, section 22 of Germany‘s road traffic act is not restricted a particular party
– instead, it applies to everyone who is responsible for handling loads. In other words, manufacturers are also required to take the standards and guidelines relating to the issue of load security into account in their work.
DIN EN 474-1 is of particular importance in this regard. This document on
„Earth-moving machinery - Safety - Part 1: General requirements“ requires these items of machinery to possess (clearly marked) lashing points.
VDI 2700-13, „Securing loads for road vehicles - Oversized and heavy load transportation“ takes an even closer look at the issue and stipulates that,
where necessary, manufacturers and transport planners must take suitable steps for technical coordination as early as in the construction phase.
For many years now, lorries, trailers and semi-trailers with superstructures have had to include features (lashing points) for anchoring lashing equipment so loads can be transported safely. This requirement is detailed in Germany‘s regulation for preventing vehicle accidents, BGV D 29, which refers in turn to DIN-EN 12640 („Lashing points on commercial vehicles“) as a source of instructions.
Despite all of these rules and regulations, problems frequently arise on a day-to-day level. It makes sense to take a look at these activities and the close level of cooperation that exists between transport technicians and manufacturers.
When heavy machinery or components are being transported, these loads can be subject to tremendous physical pressures. Direct lashing is a method of ensuring that the forces necessary to keep the load securely positioned on the load bed are applied with maximum efficiency and reliability.
However, this requires lashing points to be available on both the load itself and the load bed. By extension, securing loads correctly is something that must be considered very early on in the construction phase, and the manufacturer or constructor is ultimately responsible for it.

Securing loads – an introduction
It should be possible to recognise lashing points clearly and quickly, and they should also display the permitted lashing force.
Any given item of machinery should have a sufficient number of lashing points with the necessary lashing force.
It should be possible to replace lashing points easily if they are damaged.
Lashing points should have a distinctive plastic deformation before they fail – to make damage visible.
The nominal capacitiy of a lashing point should be introducable in all anticipated loading directions; in the ideal case it should be loadable from any direction.
Lashing points should have a safety factor of 2:1.
GUIDELINESSecuring loads correctly
Often, attachment fixtures are added ad-hoc to a vehicle so loads can be secured. However, these are not sourced from lifting technology suppliers and therefore only display their load capacity [t] instead of the permitted lashing capacity - LC [daN]. NB: lashing points and attachment fixtures are subject to different safety-related factors.
The use of RUD lashing points is recommended to ensure that day-to-day requirements can be met adequately. These features are not only high-strength and subject to testing, but they have also proven their
The following list includes a few practical facts for machine construction.
worth under everyday conditions. An excellent example of German-made quality, the meet all of the requirements mentioned here, including the presence of a stamp displaying their permitted LC (lashing capacity [daN]).
RUD has developed a wide range of ultra-strong lashing points. As the illustrations show (p.172), well-known vehicle manufacturers have long made ample use of these components: eyelets made of forged, high-quality alloy steel. Joining the range of popular weldable items (certified welders can be hired to retrofit existing equipment) is RUD’s first threaded lashing point,
the L-VLBG with its LC value on display.
The CAD data for RUD lashing points is available on a free CD-ROM, and it can also be sourced on www.rud.com for independent CAD-related activities. Our paper on “Optimum load securing” provides a host of additional information on the topic of securing loads. Simply contact us for a copy. Free programs for calculating what it takes to secure loads are also available on the CD-ROM, at www.rud.com and in the form of iOS and Android smartphone apps for downloading from their respective platforms, the App Store and Google Play Store.
It should be possible to access lashing points easily.
The design of lashing points should permit the closure of the lashing hook’s safety latch.
Lashing points should suit the design of the lashing hook and not require additional adapters or components such as shackles.
Lashing points should ensure that the lashing hooks connected to them are subjected to loads in the correct manner (loads are borne by the bed of the hook; no bending).
Lashing points should be positioned so “direct strand” lashing is possible, i.e. chains, ropes, etc. do not run around any corners or angles.
Lashing points should be positioned so that impractical lashing angles are avoided – reference figure of α; β ≈ 30°.

Product features
Optimal for the lashing of oversized load.
Simple and process safe positioning for the welding of pre-assembled components consisting of suspension ring and weld-on blocks.
Clear marking of the minimum lashing capacity for all loading directions. Lashing Capacity marking in daN.
Split force introduction due to multiple point fixing.
Suspension ring with enlarged pivoting area.
Requirements of the DIN 18800 are fulfilled by the weld arrangement (end-to-end HY weld seam), this means non occurance of contact/crevice corrosion due to the endless weld seam. Therefore suitable for outdoor constructions. The circular weld seam HY requires only a small welding volume.
Clamping spring works as a noise reduction and holds the suspension ring in the requested position; therefore simple hinge of lashing mean possible.
Easy painting due to fixing of the suspension ring.
The weld-on-block is made (forged) out of quality weldable steel.
Significant product characteristics of the SLP are subject to property right claims.

Product features LRBS-FIX LRBK-FIXLRBS-FIX LRBK-FIX
Clear marking of the minimum lashing capacity for all loading directions. Lashing Capacity marking in daN.
LRBS-FIX: Suspension ring pivots 180°.LRBK-FIX: Suspension ring with enlarged pivoting area.
Split force introduction due to multiple point fixing.
Requirements of the DIN 18800 are fulfilled by the weld arrangement (circular fillet weld), this means non occurance of contact/crevice corrosion due to the endless weld seam (therefore suitable for outdoor constructions). The circular weld seam HY requires only a small welding volume.
Clamping spring works as a noise reduction and holds the suspension ring in the requested position; therefore simple hinge of lifting mean possible.
Patented markings for easy determination for withdraw of service.
Easy painting due to fixing of the suspension ring.
Simple and process safe positioning for the welding of pre-assembled components consisting of suspension ring and weld-on blocks.
The weld-on-block is made (forged) out of a good weldable steel.
Phosphated surface.
Significant product characteristics of the LRBS-FIX and LRBK-FIX are subject to property right claims.
Other important RUD specific information and specialities to our RUD lifting points can be found on page 20 and in the specific user instruction (www.rud.com).
