52 James Street is a charming brownstone located in a historic district. Multi-story bay windows dominate the exterior facade of all the residences in the neighborhood. This design transforms the entire exterior by using a glass curtain wall system. The number one complaint of residents is the feeling of being fortressed in to keep crime out, this facade was designed to transform how the building is used to create exterior living spaces. By moving the walls of the interior spaces in and creating a masonry screen system, this design creates limited privacy for the necessary interior spaces and pockets of space for the residents to create exterior living spaces such as a exterior dining room, roof top family room, and exterior porch area. Glazing the brick created a play with transparency as well as a play with refl ections. Changing the interior to a prismatic shape and glazing the brick screen created refl ective properties of the interior residence and interstitial spaces ...

... even creating a sepia glow at moments.

Much like that of the tectonic plates which create the earth's mountains and volcanos, this proposal for the Harrison train station uses the horizontal shifts in ridership through the week as the basis of the design. The push and pull of the daily commuters and sports fans eventually lead you vertically to the path train at the Harrison station. Using a geometric module and the structural theories of origami, the riders get the same sense of expedition as they traverse through the concourse up to the platform...

Simplicity of design can create a complex perception of space; inducing emotional states experienced by the inhabitants through a designed environment. This group project called for the study of tectonics: how elements create form to delineate space. The struc-tural logic acts, not as a serial cummulative unit, but is treated as part of a shell structure. The structure allows for the spaces below to take form, infl uenced by the geometries of the structure.

Specifi c continuations of the folds and shearing moments become collumns, walls, roofs, and fl oors. Incorporating the idea of the open plan, one can weave through the spaces to truly experience the sequence. Through the application of a folded mod-ular system, one can experience a cohesive and captivating space in their commute.
