NETWORKS Networks are groups of members who share a common interest or experience. We run a comprehensive range of network meetings and forums throughout the year offering staff the opportunity to learn and develop whilst sharing and networking with peers from their own and other councils and subsidiaries, across the state.
Each is supported by a chair and committee responsible for planning the annual calendar of events for that network. Staff can develop leadership skills and share with colleagues in the sector by participating in one of our Network Committees. Network Chairs also receive a Board precis after each meeting and will be invited to share and connect with both the Board and each other.
We are pleased to offer Zoom and dial in options for participation. Distance or circumstances shouldn’t be a barrier to getting involved!
A summary of our current networks, planned activity, and related fees follows, noting all fees are ex gst.
Membership categories eligible for Network participation are Council, Subsidiary, Individual, Fellow, Student and Retired.
The performance of networks will be reviewed regularly to assess on-going membership participation and value. This will provide opportunities for adding new networks should there be sufficient membership demand.

MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE The Management Challenge is a simulation-based team building, learning and networking program using real local government themes – the types of issues that a senior management team in a council would most likely face. The teams are challenged to respond to a series of tasks in a unique one-day, fast paced, “pressure cooker” environment. Some tasks will require written responses (such as a council report or recommendation document), some will take the form of role plays or presentations and the teams are also scored on observations of how well they display energy, synergy, effectiveness and creative thinking. It provides an opportunity for team members to develop their skills and become more effective in the way they operate.
The Australasian Management Challenge has been at the forefront of professional development in local government in Australia and New Zealand for over 25 years. In that time, many thousands of local government professionals have been given the opportunity to participate, grow, be challenged and learn alongside their team members and peers. Many have subsequently gone on to senior management roles.
The 2021 Management Challenge will be held on 29 April 2021.
The Rural Management Challenge is run biennially and the date for the next one will be announced soon.
LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE AWARDS Our Awards Program recognises outstanding achievement and innovation, with a program that not only recognises excellence, but also contributes to the advancement and improvement of local government as a sector.
In 2021 we will celebrate the 20th Annual Leadership Excellence Awards with a Gala Dinner on Friday 21 May 2021 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. (assuming government restrictions on large gatherings are lifted).
