TRANSCRIPT
My dear friends of Chesapeake Treasures, I want to thank all of you who were patient and helpful during my two terms. There were a group of you that were always there to offer help, encouragement and advice. I cannot thank you enough. I have learned many things while being President, but what I most treasure are the wonderful friendships I have made.
Your new officers have been working diligently to make our next year of Chesapeake Treasures the best. Please support them in every way that you can.
Out going President, Jan Tatum
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome back from our summer break. It is time to look forward to the start of the Chesapeake Treasures year. Our year of activity runs from September to June. Just to peak your interest, Linda Ownby is opening the year’s meeting programs with Salt Cellar Pin cushions.
As your new President, I look forward to working as a team making Chesapeake Treasures the place to gain knowledge of smocking and related needlework as well as make lifelong friends. A team can only function if all members do their part. Please remember that our group is only as good as its members and their involvement.
I want to thank everyone that volunteered their time during the summer months to attend the Wee Care workshops. Sandy and Joyce will have the gowns, hats, and bonnets ready for distribution. You may pick yours up starting at the September meeting. Please remember that completion of 4 gowns with a total of 6 projects is expected from each member.
Both the Hospitality and Publicity committees are still without a chairman. For those that have not signed up for a committee, please think about accepting responsibility of one of these committees. Talk to your friends, as together it may be workable for you to co-chair a committee. Neither of these committees will take too much time, but are an integral part of our chapter.
Please take the time to welcome our newest member, Patricia Kwasniewski, at the next meeting.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the monthly meetings.
Dawn Watson
Public Service Report
After several workshops in May and June we have 145 gowns/bonnets/caps and buntings ready to
distribute at the September meeting. The gowns will be packaged with the bonnet or cap. When
returning items, please return in the bag you received with the size label—add your name on a piece of
paper in the bag; bonnets and caps should be returned in the zip lock bag along with the instructions
and placed in the bag with the gown. This will really help us at the end of the year as we are packaging
the gowns for the hospitals. Please let Joyce/Sandy know what you have returned. Each member is re-
quired to participate in the Wee Care Program. If you have not received your gowns yet, please see
Joyce Ross or Sandy Suhrie at the September meeting.
At the October meeting our program is about the Wee Care gowns. We have lots of tips to share with
you as well as some handouts. If you are new to the chapter and need some guidance on where to
begin, this is the perfect meeting for you. Our members are always willing to share their knowledge of
smocking. We will be sharing information on types of threads, hemming options, blocking the gowns,
assembly of the boys caps and the bonnets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At our September meeting Linda Ownby will be showing us how to make Saltcellar Pin-
cushions. This is a picture of a completed project. Please
bring embroidery floss for your flowers, green floss for
leaves, directions for your design, needles, white sewing
thread, marking pen for the design and scissors. Embroi-
dery design should be 1/2” - 1”. Linen, stuffing and glass
saltcellars will be provided.
There are lots of cute tiny designs on Pinterest.

Tips & Tricks
I saw a comment on Facebook that stripping your floss with wool roving helps to keep your floss nice
and smooth when doing picture smocking. Some ladies preferred using the Thread Heaven, running the
floss through some starch or water with ice cubes, or pressing the floss. What is your favorite method?
REMINDERS
Anne Arundel County Fair—September 12—16, 2018— We hope to see many items entered from our
very talented group. We need to bring sewing/embroidery arts back to the fair. Each year the amount of
items on display gets smaller and smaller. Consider becoming a judge at the county fair. Training is
provided to learn how to judge the categories. Our chapter is doing a demo on Saturday, September 15,
in the Exhibit Hall from 10:00—12:00pm. If you are doing the demo, Sandy will have tickets for free
admission. Let Sandy know if you need a ticket for admission.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Diamond State Stitchers are looking forward to the 13th and 14th of October for our retreat with Wendy Schoen. The date is quickly approaching to finalize the number of kits that Wendy will be bringing with her. Mar-lene Mehn is taking registrations. If you can’t fill out the form to join us today but want to come, please let Marlene know. As many of you are aware, Wendy is a very experienced hand embroiderer as well as her expertise with the sewing machine. Both Saturday and Sunday will be hand classes, so no heavy machines to lug. We know how busy everyone’s calendars are but please don’t miss out on this experience. Wendy will be teaching for the first time in 6 years outside of her home studio in New Orleans. Looking forward to seeing many of our stitching friends join us. Fondly, Sally Rifenburg Diamond State Stitchers Chesapeake Treasures National SAGA Secretary Martha Sykora had a nice visit with Nancy Lee Ross and wanted to share a picture.
