Will you take the Red Envelope Challenge? This summer, Westbury UMC is sending a team of youth and adults to Mizak, Haiti in partnership with HAPI (Haitian Artisans for Peace International). HAPI works to break the cycle of poverty, maternal and infant mortality and broken family systems. The organization focuses on community health, holistic education and economic empowerment, embodying the love of Jesus Christ.

Starting this week, as a fundraiser for this trip, near the Café you will find 144 numbered envelopes. Take one or more of these envelopes and match the number with a donation of the same amount. Please return all envelopes by Sunday, March 13.

If you have any questions, contact Josh Lemons, Director of Youth Ministry, at josh1@westburyumc.org

Festival ChoirEver thought about singing in the choir but just can’t make a weekly commitment? Now is your chance!

The Westbury UMC Festival Choir is a “sometimes” choir that will gather for only three rehearsals to prepare music for the 10:45 am Easter service on March 27. Rehearsals are on Saturdays, March 5, 19 & 26, 10 am–noon. Those interested in participating do not need to audition or know how to read music to join. Simply come to at least two out of the three rehearsals. CDs are available to help you learn your part in between rehearsals.

For details, contact Pastor DeAndre at (713) 723-0175 or deandre1@westburyumc.org

WELCOMING NEW MUSIC ASSOCIATE

Born and raised in Natal, Brazil, Karina Praxedes Barnett moved to the United States in 2004 to pursue her Doctorate in Collaborative Piano at the University of Houston, completed in 2009. Prior to that, she received her Bachelor of Music in Piano from Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and her Master of Musical Arts from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Karina has extensive training in chamber music and accompanying and also uses her sight-reading skills as a part-time collaborative pianist at The University of Houston. She plays and performs recitals with different instrumentalists and voice students. Karina also teaches piano privately and keeps a full piano studio of elementary-age kids.

Other than her passion to make music with various groups, Karina likes to collect coffee mugs from different countries and enjoys cooking and trying new recipes, never letting a month go without baking her famous Brazilian carrot cake. The biggest blessing of all is sharing life with her husband, Brian, and raising their two precious boys, Benjamin and Thomas. They like to chill out on Saturdays and enjoy escaping from Houston heat in the summer to visit family in Brazil.

We welcome Karina on staff here at Westbury UMC as Music Associate. Her primary responsibilities will be accompaniment for our choral ensembles, playing piano and organ in worship and directing the Children’s Choir.

Several of our youth are at MidWinter Retreat this weekend. Let’s pray for the group and for their time spent growing closer to God and others:
