Design Need
This is an explanation of the problem I intend to solve:
My family and I are regularly in the studyroom, to relax, read a book, listen to music orsurf on the Internet. But there is just oneproblem; at night when we switch on thelights, the room becomes too bright.Currently, the two ways to solve this problemis either to turn on the blazing lights or notuse any light at all, which means that wecannot do anything in the room at all. This isan inconvenience, as all of us want a calmatmosphere and not a glaring light blindingour eyes before sleeping. With a bit ofillumination, my family and I will be able tofully use the study room during the night.
Design Brief
This is what Ive intended to do to solve the problem I identified :
In order to solve my problem of not having enough light in the study room, I havedecided to create a source of light in the room so my family and I can go in the roomand be able to read a book, go on the computer without having to turn on the lights.
The room is green and has a wooden, big table in the middle with the computer, books, and stationary on top, which is the perfect place to put an illuminable object. Thus the lighting will be designed to be placed on a flat surface, provide enough lightand its brightness can be adjusted. Also, the light should enhance the aesthetics ofmy study room by matching the rooms color, theme, design and dcor.

Task B1- Design Specification
This is a list of requirements my product must be in order to be successful andfeasible:
Type of Specification Specification Justification1. Function(s)
(What should the light achieve? What is its purpose?)
(1.1) Provides sufficient lightthat improves theatmospere in the studyroom
(1.2) Able to provide enoughlight when the room isdark
(1.1) As a part of my designproblem, I have stated thatthe light should improve therooms atmosphere byproving light. Additionally, thelight provided will need to beable to sufficiently illuminatethe room.
(1.2) It is essential for theproduct to produce efficientlight, as it is its entirepurpose to do so.Without being able to providethe necessary light when theroom is dark, it will not beable to be used, thus notsolving the design problem.
2. Performance
(Where and when is your lightdesigned to be placed/used?)
(2.1) Can be easily movedaround
(2.2) Needs to be able to beplaced on a flat surface or table.
(2.1) For it to be usedcompetently, the product willneed to be easily movedaround. The table that theproduct will be placed on isalso big. This spec isimportant because it will beconvenient for the client tomove it around the table.
(2.2) It will need to be able tobe placed on a flat surface, meaning that it must be stableon the table so that when it isused; it is safe, firm andexpedient.

3. Target Market
Who is intended to use the light(age gender interest)?
(3.1) Should be appropriate forall ages
(3.1) Since the product isintended to use in the studyroom, which is used by all
family members (2 adults, 1teenager), the design of theproduct should beappropriate for all ages.
4. Aesthetics
What design styles will the lighthave? What is the image being created?
(4.1) Should match the themeof the room, this includes thecolor, material.
(4.2) Should have a
minimalistic design
(4.1) It is essential for theproduct to match the designof the room. The room (seenin the picture in the DesignBrief) has green wallpaper
and dark brown bookshelfwith a big, light, wooden tablein the middle. The productwill need to fit in with thedesign of the room and cannotbe made out of bright acrylicpink since they do not match. The product can be made outof wood. If the appearance ofthe lamp does not fit in, theaesthetics of the room will besomewhat unpleasant. Therefore, I believe that it ismost fitting for my productsdesign to match the theme ofthe room.
(4.2) I have decided for thelamp to be minimalistic. Thisis because the room is alreadyfilled with other things sohaving a lamp with a complexdesign will even add to therooms clutter. Therefore theproducts design should beminimal, possibly abstract butsimple. Additionally to add tothe lamps creativity, thisminimalistic design should

not be in a form of a normallamp.
5. Safety
What safety factors are importantin the design?
(5.1.) The distance between the
light bulb and the body of thelamp must not allow anyoverheating.
(5.2) The product must bebalanced and stable
(5.1) For the product to be
safe when in use, the distancebetween the light bulb andthe lamp must not allow anyoverheating. The bulboverheating can cause thematerial to burn. For instance,if the bulb is wrapped withpaper, the paper may get onfire due to the bulbs intenseheat and the twos closedistance.
(5.2) The product needs to besafely used by being balancedand stable. This is because theproduct should not fall overor its balance be easilyaffected by movement. Itsefficiency and usage willdecrease if it is not stable.Additionally, the productspoor stability may causeaccidents. For instance, it mayfall down the table and hit theclients feet or collapse on the table and knock off a cup orhit the computer.
6. Properties
Are there any special qualities?(6.1) The product should belong lasting
(6.1) It is important for theproduct to be long lasting, inother words, be able to beused for a long time. Itsdesign and quality should beable to be maintained for along period of time. To do so,the product, including thedesign and use of materials, needs to be high quality, stable and strong. For its

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C 7
maximum usage, the productneeds to be able to be used fora long time.
7. Dimensions
Are there any limitations orconsiderations with respect tosize?
(7.1) The measurements of thelamp must be at least 15x20x8but should not exceed 30x 45x13
(all measurements in cm)(width x length x breadth)
(7.1) The minimum andmaximum measurements ofthe product provided in thespecification beside should befollowed for the product tofunction efficiently and alsomatch the surroundings ofwhere it will be placed.Additionally, for it to sit onthe table in the room that it isintended to be. The lamp
should not be small since thesurface area of the table itselfis 1.5mx1.5m, and to providesufficient light to thebelongings on the table, thelamp should not be small. Yet,the product should not be bigas it will look unbalanced andawkward. Thus, by making it smeasurements in the rangeprovided, it will fit on thetable nicely and provideenough light.

Task B2- Design Ideas
1) Feasible Ideas
In order to create the product, I will need to design it. This stage starts from abrainstorm and then a selection of designs sketched. Below are 4 feasible designideas I have created:

2) Evaluation of Each Design
Based on the 4 ideas above, I will need to choose one. I will do this by evaluatingeach of my designs against each point of the specification in an appraisal of ideas
table.
My designs are rated out of 5 against each specification, I will be using the designstotal as a considering factor in choosing my final design.

3) Chosen Design
Based on my appraisal of ideas table I have created above, it is clear that Design #4 has the highest total score.
Additionally, I believe that this design has a minimalistic design; it is made out ofwood (that will compliment the aesthetics of the room), and is safe. Where as otherdesigns such as design #1, has an unsuitable placement of the light bulb and design#2 has a safety issue with the mulberry paper and light bulb that may causeoverheating. While design #3 is made out of white acrylic, which is a material thatmay cause an imbalance with the wooden cone, is easily dirtied and does not matchthe surrounding of the room that the product will be placed in. Therefore, design #4seems as the most appropriate choice, the design matches my criteria and it scoreda full 55 overall score and a 5/5 for all of the specs I created.
After considering this and the fact that the design seems most feasible for this task, this will be my final, chosen design.

Task B3- Development of Design
There are improvements that should be made to make my design better and meetthe specifications that are not currently met. These improvements will be based on aseries of interviews with my peers and my chosen client.
1) Feedback from peers:
Firstly, I asked my friends for possible improvements, here are the suggestions theymade:
Peer Suggestion#1 Grace The light may not be able to shine as good because
the light bulb is facing the side#2 Fah The design can be less bulky#3 Charlie None#4 Don Looks redundant but interesting and nice
2) Feedback from client:
Secondly, I have asked my parents on their perspective of the product, as they willbe using it in the study room. Their feedback is essential as they are the clients ofthis product, so the design should appeal and please them. Below is a summary onwhat they said:
The design has a simple/minimalistic design Can also be used as a decoration Nice idea of the initial N The light shines straight it will shine right on the eye. A reading lamp has a
flexible head/body, It is stable
3) Self-feedback (+client feedback)
Since I am also a user of this product, I also have a say in the design of this product. Ihave critically thought on the problems that this product may face and the possible
improvements.
a. I believe that a possible problem with this design is its ability to produce efficientlight (also one of my specification). It was also stated in my client feedback and fromGrace. This is because the bulb directly shines to one side and the light will likely betoo strong and bright. It maybe better if the light bulb hung down instead so that thelight is not too strong and this way, the light will be able to provide more and betterlight to the atmosphere.
-

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C 15
To solve this problem, I have changed the design of my product. Firstly, I havedecided to change the cone into a dome since a cone will be challenging to create.Since it is a dome and pinewood cannot be exploded, its material will be changed toacrylic. And to add to the minimalistic, simple design, the acrylic will be transparent.
Replacing the material from pinewood to acrylic will make the product morebalanced as less weight is on the right side of the product (since acrylic is muchlighter than wood).
Furthermore, I have decided to place the dome/bulb to shine downwards in orderto produce better light.
This is my modified final design: (measurements are all in cm)
The dome and the
pinewood will bejoined by securely
gluing the twopieces together. Thetop of the dome (or
the area thatconnects with thebody of the lamp),will have a squarehole that will have
the identicaldimensions of the
base of thepinewood. While
the other pieces ofpine wood will be
joined by diagonallyshaving each
connective ends byexactly 45 degrees
and then gluedtogether.
(note: I fear that the product may not be stable and balanced as the right side of theN shape has the bulb and cone attached to it, so the lamps weight will be skewed tothe right. If this occurs, one of my specs will not be achieved. During the creationphase, if the lamp faces any issues with balancing, a horizontal wood extensionmaybe added to the left. The piece will be attached and continued from the left sideof the N shape, so the outer left piece of wood would look like a flipped L )

Task B4- Final Design
1) Final Design
Based on Task B3, I believe there are improvements that can be made. So I have
developed my chosen design and created it into a CAD drawing using the 123Designsoftware. Based on my development this is my final design, below is my final designdrawn orthographically:
Orthographic:Note: the color of acrylic is actually transparent but for it to be clearly seen in CAD, Ihave temporarily changed its color to grey.

2) Evaluation of Final Design
To evaluate my final design, the table below justifies the reason why I have chosendesign #4 aka the design digitally created on 123design above.
Specification Justification of Final Chosen Design
(1.1) Provides sufficient light thatimproves the atmosphere in thestudy room
5/5
With recent changes to the design, the lamp will providesufficient light that will improve the atmosphere in thestudy room. This will allow the lamp to provide moreand better light to the atmosphere.
(1.2) Able to provide enough lightwhen the room is dark
5/5
If it is able to provide sufficient light (seen in thespecification above), the lamp will be able to provideenough light when the room is dark.
(2.1) Can be easily moved around 5/5
Due to the designs solidity and firmness, it can bemoved around with ease. There are two points ofcontact that the product will have with the table. Also, the compact pinewood and its smooth surface will makeit easy to transport the lamp around.
(2.2) Needs to be able to beplaced on a flat surface or table. 5/5
As mentioned above, the lamp has two points of contact. These two points of contact, which is the bottom of theN shape, are both smooth and flat that makes theproduct to be able to be placed on the intended table.

19/37
Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C 19
(3.1) Should be appropriate forall ages
5/5
Due to its simple design, I believe that this design isappropriate and appeals to all ages. As a teenager, I do
like its design and based on the interview with myparents; they do like the design as well. This shows thatthis final design is appropriate for all ages (teenager andadults). Since these 2 age groups are the ones who willbe using this product, and its design attracts all of theclients (despite the age disparity), the design isappropriate.
(4.1) Should match the theme ofthe room, this includes the color,
material.
5/5
The design of the lamp matches with the aesthetics ofthe room it is aimed to be placed in. The theme of thisroom is nature as there is a wooden book self, table andgreen wallpaper. The properties of the lamp includebeing made out of wood and transparent acrylic. Firstly, the products material is pinewood, which matches withthe light brown wooden table that the product will beplaced on. Its color will truly compliment each other.Additionally, the green background of the room willmatch the light brown color of the pinewood since bothcolors (brown and green) are often associated togetherand seen together in objects such as trees, plants, etc. Therefore, it will promote to the rooms theme of nature. Additionally, the transparent acrylic used for the domewill match the rooms appearance as it is transparentand will blend in easily. The use of transparent acrylicwill make it look more modern, artistic, etc. I believethat the aesthetics of this design achieves thisspecification as it the design blends in with theaesthetics of the room.
(4.2) Should have a minimalisticdesign 5/5
My chosen final design is minimalistic. This is because itis of a basic N shape, with straight and consistent edgesand lines. My design does not contain intricate details,
-
8/10/2019 Let there be light Design Portfolio
20/37
Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C 20
small patterns, instead its design is solid, bold andsimple. This can also be supported by the client feedbackwhere both of my parents/client agreed that the designis minimalistic.
(5.1.) The distance between thelight bulb and the body of thelamp must not allow anyoverheating.
5/5
The distance between the light bulb and the body of thelamp is close, however, due to the body of the lampbeing made out of acrylic (and not paper like design #2).Acrylic is a strong material; the likelihood of a light bulboverheating it will be low. Therefore, safety issuesregarding overheating will not be present with thisdesign.
(5.2) The product must bebalanced and stable
5/5
The design of the product is balanced and stable. Seenby the explanation in specs 2.1 and 2.2, the design issolid and very durable. Additionally, thebreath/thickness of the product is pretty thick (8cm),therefore, it will be stable.
However, as mentioned in the self-evaluation of thechosen design, the weight of the product will be mainlyskewed to the right as there is the bulb and cone. But Ido believe that the design I have right now is stable andbalanced enough.
(6.1) The product should be longlasting
(predicted by its design and useof materials)
5/5
The product will be long lasting since it is made out ofpinewood, a solid and sturdy material that will be nearimpossible to wear out or break if used normally. Moreover, Pinewood is widely used in carpentry items,so its appliance in this product will not pose a problemon its age o f use. The acrylic dome will also be durable. As for the design, it is durable and firm, making it moreable to be used for a longer time. Additionally, it isevident from the other specs (5.2) (5.1) (2.2) that the

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C 21
product is safe, strong, resilient, balanced and stablewhich shows its ability to be long lasting.
(7.1) The measurements of thelamp must be at least 15x20x8but should not exceed 30 cm x45cm x 13cm
5/5
The dimensions presented in the CAD drawing fit in myspec. The designs measurements do not exceed themaximum and is not lower than the minimumrequirement.
Total: 55 points
Summary of Evaluation:Design #4, or my chosen design has matched all of my specifications; therefore it isfeasible. It meets my function, and it is clearly suitable to be placed in the intendedatmosphere. The design meets all of my specification and its categories such asfunction, properties, safety, aesthetics, target market, and performance. There willneed no further development for the design and for my specification.

Criterion C: Creating the Solution
Task C1- Plan for Production
I have created a logical steps in which I needed to create my product. This includes the process, allocated
resources, and estimated required time and safety precautions. The plan I have created below is detailed
and clearly thought out as all of the compo nents of my productions creation process are created.
Safety:
I have the responsibility to employ safe working techniques in order to avoid harm to others and myself.
Below are safety issues that I will need to keep in mind...
1. Always give my undivided attention
2. Remove loose fitting clothing; jewelry and tie back long hair.
3. No contact with water while using machineries. This is because the water will cause the surface to be
slippery and may even cause an electrical shock.
4. Goggles, gloves, apron, other protective devices, should be used at all times when the equipment is in
use. This includes the scroll saw, disk sander, drill press, etc.
5. Must be aware of sharp edges and blades and must be careful when used. E.g saw
6. A distance should be clear of people and debris around the machine
7. If assistance for certain machines is required, I must ask Khun Ya or Mr. Tim to help as the usage of the
machine may be too challenging and pose a threat to my safety if I used it.
Depending on the type of materials and equipment I am using, I will need to use different or sometimes
even all of the listed safety rules above. But most importantly, I will need to be attentive at all times.

Task C4- Justification of Changes to Design and Plan
I will be outlining the changes I made to my design and plan as my product has turned outdifferent from what I have intended but much more improved. Below are the changes andjustifications I have made to my 1) design and my 2) plan:
1) Changes to Design
I have made these significant modifications because of several reasons. I was writing my
plan but soon realized that it would not work out. I did not think about the step of joining
and installing the dome and wooden piece through properly. The dome cannot be joined to
the edge of the pinewood for the bulb to be installed.
So, Mr. Tim suggested changing my lamp design. Since I removed the dome and its attached
roof, I changed from using the light bulb to the LED light strip. The light strip would be
looped around the holes in the body of the lamp. So, I drilled 3 holes in each of the three
wooden blanks and attached an additional N acrylic piece on each of the sides. The two N
acrylic pieces with the identical sizes of the pinewood would be attached to each side of the
pinewood. Refer to the picture above for the exact changes.

Changes removed from the design:
1. Dome
2. Rotated L shape
Changes added to the design:
1. LED Light Strip
2. Drilled holes on lamps wooden body
3. N acrylic shapes
4. Screws on each end of N
I believe that this design is much more aesthetically pleasingly and more sensible use. Since
the design has changed, the process of making it also changed likewise.

2) Changes to Plan
As a lot of changes were made to my design, the process in creating it was greatly distinct
from the initial plan created. Below is list of the changes and its justifications:
1. Measurements of the pinewood body
As I received the pinewood pieces, I arranged them into the N shape Iintended but I felt that it was too small. So, I changed the measurements of thewooden pieces by making it longer. Khun Ya had to cut new pieces. The pieces werecut to 8cmx28cm and 8cmx33cm instead of 8cmx22cm and 8cmx28cm.I believe that enlarging the lamps body will make improve its aesthetics as the lampcovers more surface area and does not look small, and miniature. Additionally, thisappropriately serves its purpose of being placed on a big table.
2. Shaving the Wood
I made additions to the plan, as the plan I created was brief and did notprovide specific details on how to measure the angles of the shaved wood. Theangles of the wood were determined by laying the pieces into the N shape on alarge piece of paper. Then, the shape of the lamp was drawn on a piece of paper todecide its angle for it to form as an N. I also required assistance from Khun Ya inslicing the edges as this step is too challenging for me (different from my plan) but Iwas watching and somewhat helped him in some minor parts.

The sliced wooden edges were then smoothened by using the disk sander to evenout the edges. I also sanded some parts of the edge, as it was still a bit clumpy. Ithen placed the wood pieces into an N and they all fit perfectly.
3. Joining the wooden pieces
I initially planned for the method of joining of the wooden edges to be gluedbut then I feared that the glue wouldnt be secure enough. So, I decided for theshaved edges to be glued and then shot with the gun, it looked like this:

By changing the method of joining the wooden pieces, it allows my product to bemore stable, safe and fastened which achieves a few of my specs.
4. Drilling holes in the body
As one of my changes to design, I have decided to change to using a LED lightstrip and thread it through holes drilled into the body of the lamp. Drilling theseholes require a different process: Firstly, knowing the holes had to be evenly spreadand the same for all 3 of the lamps body, I measured and m arked out the placementfor the holes with a pencil on one of the pinewood pieces. I measured the thicknessof the LED light strip and got a drill bit that would be a bit bigger than the width ofthe LED light strip (diameter was around 1.5cm). Then, I stacked the other twopieces below the one with the pencil marks. Next, the vice was set up with onewooden block to be placed in between in and one thick on placed above it for my 3pinewood pieces to be placed on. Then, a clamp was used in securing the 3 piecestogether, not allowing them to move. I used a drill to drill in the holes. This whole
process took around 20 minutes. It looked like this:
5. Creation of N shaped acrylic
As one of my changes to design, I decided to place N shaped acrylic at the sides ofthe wooden body. To do this, I trace the lamps current body on a piece of paperwith a ruler and pencil and then evenly added 1 more centimeter on each side of the

pieces as I want the acrylic to be 3cm thick. I then used 2D design and created the Nshape according to the dimensions on the paper. This took me more time as I havenot used 2D design in a very long time. I then duplicated the N shape so there was 2identical N shapes on the design for each side of the lamp. I printed this design on awhite acrylic piece through using a laser cutter. This took around 40 minutes. I took
the pieces home and sanded the edges with sanded paper (800 gradient and 1200gradient). The edges became rounder and smoother.
6. Joining N shaped acrylic to the lamps body
To join the acrylic pieces onto the wooden body took a long time, this caused a delayin submitting in my product. Firstly, I smeared TOA glue on the wooden body andstuck the N shape on it. I clamped the 3 pieces together using 4 clamps, one on eachend of the N shape. I left it overnight but the next day I came back and the pieces fellout. It looked like this:
Icame after school again and Mr. Tim advised to just drill it.I aligned the N with the N, it was a bit challenging toprecisely place the N piece exactly where it needed to be. Iplanned that each end of the N would be drilled; a total of 8,so I marked it out, I also had to make sure that they wereevenly placed. I clamped the product with the table tosecure it. By the time Kabir finished the drill, I starteddrilling but then both of the drills ran out of battery. So, Ihad to come the day after. I used 3 different drill bits, one ofdrilling into the acrylic and wood, one for enlarging thehole in the acrylic to fit the head of the screw and one fordrilling in the screw. I was given 20 minutes in class the

other day to finish drilling all 8 holes and screwed them. I did not face any problemsas I became better in drilling and it became easier.
7. Weaving the LED light strip
I needed to weave in the LED light strip in the holes, as it isa part of my new design. It was pretty easy to do; it fitperfectly in the holes. This took me around 3 minutes to do.
After this, I sanded the unsmooth areas like around theholes with a 1200 gradient sand paper and also polished theacrylic using brasso as it is a bit dirty.
Summary
As the majority of components in my design were changed, the process in creating it took a significantly longer timethan I had planned, especially the joining of the acrylic andwooden pieces. I changed 3 of my steps (measurements, shaving, joining of wood), removed 3 old steps and added 4new ones as my design has changed. So the most common change to my plan is thesteps and the time taken to complete the steps. I also missed around a total of 4-5workshop lessons as I was sick for 2 and I had volleyball tournaments for the rest soI came in around 4 afterschool sessions from 2.30-3.45 to complete my product.
Finally, my product is completed and I believe this new, modified design will achievemore of my specifications compared to the initial, old design.
