Math Counting seashells - Use
the printable number
mats. Add the correct
number of seashells (real
or printable) to each mat.
This can also be done by
numbering real plastic
buckets and adding real
shells. (TF)
Plant the flag - Match the
printable shape flags to
the appropriate shape
sand castles printables.
This could also be done by
drawing shapes in the
sand (in a tray); and then
have children add small
paper flags with shapes
drawn on them.
Beach ball math - Draw
numbers on a beach ball.
Toss (or roll), and say the
name of the number your
left hand lands on. Say a
number that is one more
or one less as an alterna-
tive idea.
Shell connect-the-dots -
Play a 3D game of con-
nect-the-dots using shells
and strings.
Shell patterns - Use 2 or 3
different types of shells to
make patterns. Alterna-
tively, use the printables
included with these plans.
(TF)

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science Beach collection - Gather
a collection of items you
might find while walking
on the beach (shells, sea
glass, rocks, etc.). Place
them with a hand lens and
let kids explore freely. (TF)
Beach 5 senses - Using the
five senses as a guide,
brainstorm a list of things
you might see, hear, smell,
taste, touch at the beach.
Record your ideas. (TF)
Keep safe at the beach -
Work together to make a
list of ways to stay healthy
and safe at the beach.
Beach observation -
Watch the short clip. Dis-
cuss some things observed
about the ocean/beach
and how they are the
same and different from
beaches in your area. (TF)
Sand “volcano” - Use play
sand, real sand, or kinetic
sand as a base for a foam-
ing, fizzing chemical reac-
tion.
Literacy Beach emergent reader
- Print out the appropri-
ate reader, depending
on your needs. Com-
plete and read the
book together.
Beach bucket rhyming -
Match pictures that
rhyme with the beach-
themed printable.
Seashell name game -
Match letter “pearls” to
the appropriate shells
while spelling names.
Shell words - Use shells
to practice making sight
words.
Beginning letters - Print
out the picture cards.
Place a shell or a
clothespin on the letter
that each picture be-
gins with. This can also
be done using real ob-
jects and shells with let-
ters written on them.
Other Beach sensory small world
- Fill your water table with
shells, sand, and water.
(TF)
Colorful shell sculptures -
Use clay, colored sand,
and colorful shells to cre-
ate sculptures.
Play sand - Make play
sand that’s moldable like
wet sand. Add sand castle
molds and sand toys to
make a sensory bin.
(TF)
Sand and shell collage -
Make a beach collage
with sand, shells, and glue.
Coconut play dough and
shells - Coconut-scented
play dough, shells, and
glass gems make for a
beautiful play dough invi-
tation. (TF)
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on
their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken
down by subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Number cards - Place number
cards in a basket or on a tray.
Add small shells or blue glass
beads. Children can arrange
the cards in numerical order,
count, or match the correct
amount of shells/gems to
each number.
Measuring shells - Use rulers,
Unifix cubes, or other items to
measure real shells.
Literacy
Beach sensory writing tray -
Add a small amount of plain
or colored sand to a tray. Add
glass gems or small shells to
use while forming letters. Can
also use fingers, paintbrushes,
or pompoms to write letters in
the sand.
Alphabet matching - Match
uppercase and lowercase let-
ters.
Science
Shell STEM - See how tall you
can stack seashells. Add play
dough for an additional build-
ing material. Take pictures of
each construction.
Shell imprints - Explore the dif-
ferent imprints various shells
leave in play dough or clay.
Use a magnifying glass to ob-
serve the textures up close. (TF)
Sensory
Sand castles - Make sand cas-
tles using real sand, kinetic
sand, or homemade play
sand. (TF)
Shell sensory bottles - Add
small shells to clean, empty
plastic bottles. Explore how
the sound changes depend-
ing on how full the bottle is.
Block Play
Build a sand castle - Use
wooden blocks to make a life-
sized “sand” castle to play in.
(TF)
Beach bucket building - Add
plastic beach buckets to the
blocks. Build and create struc-
tures with the pails and blocks.
(TF)
Arts and Crafts
Sandpaper castles - Create
sandcastles from different
shapes cut out of sandpaper.
Free painting at the easel -
Make a beach scene. Look at
some beach landscape pho-
tographs and art first.
