Show mercy to others
Year 2Quarter 4Lesson 6

Lesson
OverviewThe Sermon on the Mount was one of Jesus’ most famous teachings recorded in the Bible. If Jesus placed so much emphasis on the Bea=tudes, then of course we have a great responsibility to teach them to our children also. We will begin a series on the Bea=tudes by star=ng with mercy. We will be asking the ques=on: “What is your aFtude like towards others?” Mercy is such a foreign concept. In this biIer and unforgiving world, revenge is everyone’s natural reac=on to being wronged.
Bible Lesson: The Unmerciful Servant (Ma:hew 18:23-‐35)Everyone wants to be shown mercy when they have done something wrong, but when someone wrongs them, they quickly forget the mercy that they have been shown. We are not to be like the servant in the Bible who did this very thing. We should never forget the mercy God has shown towards by clearing the debt we owe for our sins.
Object Lesson 1: Show mercy to those who don’t deserve itWe tell a story of a man who shot his friend in the head, blinding him for life. This man may have deserved jail; he may have deserved to be shot himself, or even to die for what he did. But instead of wishing these things on his shooter, the vic=m had a radical change of aFtude and decided to forgive him. Mercy may be the last thing people deserve from us, yet we must remember the mercy we were shown so undeservingly, and also show mercy to those who don’t deserve it.
Object Lesson 2: Show mercy to those who are in needMany people look down on the homeless and refuse to help them, even though they are desperately in need. This is the wrong aFtude to have as we are commanded to show mercy.
Object Lesson 3: Show mercy by treaHng others with loveWhen we see people going through tough =mes we are not just to feel sorry for them, we are to go a step further and treat them with love. We will show prac=cal ways that the kids can do this.
Teacher's ResponsibilityThis is a very difficult lesson to teach because mercy is such a foreign concept to us in our humanity. There is perhaps no other way to more closely resemble the character of our Heavenly Father than in those =mes that we choose to show mercy. Take this =me to deeply reflect on the incredible mercy that God has shown to you and let that move you to passionately teach this lesson. Also, search your heart to ensure there is nobody that you are withholding mercy from, and make it a point during the week to look for opportuni=es where you can show mercy to other people.

Lesson Intro
PresentaHon: One of Jesus' most famous moments recorded in the Bible was when he sat with his disciples on top of a mountain. It was there that Jesus taught them some very important things. The Bible calls this =me “The Sermon on the Mount” and it started with something called the “BEATITUDES”. (Show slide that says Bea0tudes) Now that's an interes=ng word. Look closely at that word for a moment. If you do, you’ll see a word in there that s=cks out to you. (Switch slides to say A5tude) That word is “aRtude” and that’s what Jesus was teaching His disciples about. He wanted to teach them about having the right aRtude. If the people really understood what Jesus was saying, their aRtudes would be different.
For the next few weeks we will be teaching you the aRtudes that Jesus taught his disciples to have because they are the aRtudes you and I should have too. The first aRtude check that we will be talking about is this: What is your aRtude like towards others?
(Street noise sound effects come on and set comes alive. Shop owner comes out sweeping in front of his store and picking up the garbage. Two kids enter looking very suspicious)
Kid 1: Hey, look, now's your chance! He's sweeping out front of the toy store and his back is turned! Sneak in and get us a toy!
Kid 2: Yeah, ok I’ll do it. Wait here!
(Kid 1 hides by the garbage can wai0ng for Kid 2 to steal from the store. Kid 2 sneaks past the shop owner, grabs what he can from the shelf, and runs back to his friend. They stop and start to stuff the toys into their back packs)
Kid 2: Here, put some in your bag.
(Shop owner turns around and sees them)
Shop owner: HEY! Get back here! Somebody stop those kids!
(Police officer enters from the back of the audience and the kids bump into him half way down the aisle – he grabs both of them and leads them back towards the stage)
Police Officer: Well look who it is…Hmmm…it’s you two again. I told you that if you got into trouble again that that would be the last Hme. You two, are going to jail that’s final.
Kid 2: No, please officer, we’re sorry.
Props Shop owner costume, police officer ouZit, handcuffs, broom, 2 book bags, garbage can, crumpled up pieces of newspaper and wrappers, shelf with toys, “Toy Store” sign, 2 Power Point slides: “BEATITUDE” and “ATTITUDE.”
Actors Kid 1, Kid 2, Shop Owner, Police Officer
Music City street noise sound effects
PreparaHon Place the “Toy Store” sign over the toy shelf. Place crumpled newspaper and wrappers around the floor away from the toy shelf. Place the garbage on the stage also.
Lesson intro - page 1
Lesson IntroKid 1: Please give us another chance. We won’t do it again.
Police Officer: No! You’ve had enough chances already…
(Officer starts to get out his handcuffs and is about to arrest them – shop owner hesitates)
Shop owner: Officer, wait! Listen, I know what these boys did, but I don’t want you to send them to jail, give them another chance.
Teacher: Freeze! (Fade city sounds) Wait a minute. This can't be right. (Teacher gets close to the kid and points to him) These kids stole from him. Why would he be so nice and kind? You would think he would be angry and harsh with them and want to see them go to jail like they deserve. I know that’s the aRtude that I naturally have and so do most of you. That’s the way we are with people; the truth is we treat them according to what they have done or said to us. Deep down we love to get even. But this aRtude is totally opposite of the aRtude that Jesus taught His disciples to have. Rather than wan=ng to see someone suffer and get our revenge on them, we should show them mercy, just like this man did. (Point at man)
Look at what the memory verse says in Ma:hew 5:8. Jesus said to His disciples, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”
To be merciful means to show others love, kindness, and forgiveness no maIer what they have done or said to you. And that is exactly the aRtude that this man had towards these kids. He showed them mercy no maIer what they did. And that is the exact same aRtude you need to live by. You need to show mercy to others around you no maIer what they have done or said to you.
But you see the key is this right here -‐ when you begin to show mercy to others, guess what? You will be shown mercy. God will not overlook it. He sees the love and forgiveness you show towards others and He will show you the same love and forgiveness. So the next =me you want to be unkind, harsh, and get someone back for what they’ve done, stop yourself and remember that if you show mercy to others, you will be shown mercy as well.
Show mercy...
1. To those who don't deserve it
2. To those who are in need
3. By treaHng others with love
Lesson intro - page 2
Bible LessonThe unmerciful servant
PresentaHon: The problem with mercy is this: we all want to be shown mercy when we’ve messed up and done someone wrong, but when somebody else has wronged us, it's interes=ng how quickly we forget the mercy that was once shown to us. In fact, in the Bible, Jesus taught His disciples about this very thing. (King enters stage looking through some records and goes to sit on his throne) He told them about a king who decided to check his servant’s accounts to see how much they owed him. He had just begun to do so when one of his servants was brought in…
(Have guard bring in servant aggressively – king looks up from his scroll)
Guard: Your majesty! This servant of yours owes you $10,000,000 in silver.
(Guard pushes the servant towards the king – servant stands in front of him)
Servant 1: My King, please give me some more Hme! I don't have enough money right now to pay my debt.
King: You have had enough Hme! (King stands up and turns to the guard) Go, and take this servant to be sold as a slave along with his wife and children and everything that he has in order to pay off the debt.
(Guard starts to take servant off of stage, but servant breaks free and runs and falls before the king)
Servant 1: Please, have mercy on me. Be paHent with me and I will pay you everything.
Teacher: When the King saw the servant begging for mercy, he knew that he would never be able to pay off the debt. The king had compassion on him and he showed him mercy. Right there and then he forgave him of his debt and let him go.
(King dismisses the servant and turns around and sits back on his throne looking through the scrolls – servant slowly gets up from his knees and shows genuine thankfulness in their expression)
Aher being shown so much mercy, the servant leh the king and went out as a free man. But then he found one of his fellow servants who owed him some money. (Fellow servant enters stage looking busy with his shovel) This guy didn't owe him 10,000,000 in silver, he only owed him a few dollars -‐ it was nothing. But that servant wanted his money back immediately.
Props King costume, 2 servant costumes, guard costume, chair and white fabric (to make a throne), small table, 3 scrolls, shovel, 2 trees, 1 plas=c rock
Actors King, Servant 1, Servant 2, GuardPreparaHon Set up the throne to one side of the stage. Place the liIle table next to the throne with the scrolls on
it. Place the rock at the front of the stage on the opposite side and the trees near the back of the stage on the same side as the rock.
Bible Lesson - Page 1
(Servant approaches him in anger and chokes him)
Servant 1: Hey! Pay back what you owe me, right now!
(Fellow servant falls to his knees and begs)
Servant 2: Please, have mercy on me. Be paHent with me and I will pay you everything.
Servant 1: No! You must go to prison unHl you pay back everything that you owe me!
Teacher: Doesn’t this situa=on look familiar? Of course it does because just a moment ago, this guy here (Point to servant 1) was right over there begging for mercy for his own life. Now he’s the one who’s having someone beg him for mercy, but look what he’s doing. He’s so caught up in the moment and so caught up in geFng what was owed to him, that he’s forgo:en about how much mercy he had been shown.
Now I know how easy it is to be harsh and cruel with others when they have done something wrong to you. I understand that there have been people in your life who have hurt you. I understand that it is hard to forgive those people that have said terrible things about you. But don't ever forget the mercy that God has shown towards you. Don't ever forget what Jesus did on the cross to pay the debt that you owed. You owe a debt to Jesus for the sins that you have commiIed but there is no way you will ever be able to pay off that debt – that’s why he showed you mercy. So when you find yourself in a similar situa=on, don’t ever forget the mercy that you have been shown.
Maybe this servant had forgo:en the mercy that was shown to him, but the people around him didn’t. When they saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. When the master found out what had happened, he called the servant back in.
(King rises from his throne and crosses the stage to meet the servant – they meet center stage)
King: You worthless slave! I forgave you the whole amount that you owed me, just because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have shown mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?
In anger, his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured un=l he could pay back all he owed. In the end the servant had to pay back all that he owed originally. Why? Because he didn't show mercy like he had been shown mercy. Don't forget the mercy that God has shown you. Show mercy to others, and you will be shown mercy.

Bible LessonThe unmerciful servant
Object Lesson 1Show mercy to those who don’t deserve it
PresentaHon: It’s easy to say that you will have mercy, but it’s a different story when someone hurts you so bad or makes you really angry. The easiest thing to do in those circumstances is to give them when they deserve.
(Play suspenseful music) I had a friend called Chris who started geFng involved in a gang when he was 11 years old. Eventually he started dealing drugs. He was making a lot of money. One day he went to someone’s house to pick up some money. He knocked on the door and when the guy opened the door, he didn’t pull out money; he pulled out a gun (hold up gun). He pointed that gun right at my friend’s head and then (stop suspenseful music, play gunshot) shot him.
Listen – it was God’s mercy that he didn’t die; it was a miracle. But from that day on (enter blind man with his cane), he was blind. He s=ll cannot see. A few years aher that, Chris became a Chris=an. Something happened on the inside of him. He had an aRtude check and he did something completely unbelievable. My friend Chris realized how much mercy God had shown him. He realized that God had saved his life. He should have been dead, he should have been in jail – but God had shown him mercy. So Chris went back to that man – the same man that shot him in the head, and said to him, “I forgive you.”
That seems absurd. Why would he do that? That guy deserved jail but Chris had an aRtude check and he learned to show mercy. In Colossians 3:13, the Bible says that you need to forgive just as the Lord forgives you.
I know a girl your age. Her father had walked out on the family and her mother told her to ignore him and act like he never existed. He probably deserved that -‐ he was a lousy Dad. But this girl had to check her aRtude. The Bible says to forgive. It’s the same for you. You have to make that choice. It’s not easy, but you have to show mercy, even to those who don’t deserve it.

Music Gunshot sound effect, suspenseful music
Object Lesson 2Show mercy to those who are in need
PresentaHon: (Play city street noise) New York is a very busy city. There are lots of cars, lots of buildings, and lots of people walking down the street. Another thing that you see a lot is homeless people (enter homeless person with their cart). You ohen see them riding the subway, you see them sleeping on benches, and you see them standing on the corner always asking for money.
Homeless person: (holding can of change) Excuse me ma’am, do you have some money? Ok...God bless you. Sir, can you spare some change?
Teacher: (Fade city street noise) These people have no clothes, no food (homeless person hold up sign) and no shelter to live in. These people are in need. But many =mes when we see people like this we think to ourselves, ‘Why should I give them money? Why should I feed them? They didn't do anything for me.’ But that is the wrong aRtude. You need to show mercy to those who are in need. The next =me you see a homeless person don’t look down on them, put some change in their bucket (teacher put some change in the homeless person’s cup) and say, “God bless you.” That is showing mercy to someone who is in need.
Maybe there are people who are sick around you. Some of you don’t want to get close to them in case you catch their sickness. (Homeless person holds up “SICK” sign) That is the wrong aRtude to have. They are someone who is need. You should show them mercy and bring them soup or get them some medicine.
I know there is someone in your school who is lonely (homeless person hold up “LONELY” sign). They don’t have a friend and people tease them. If you join in with everybody else who makes fun of them, then you have the wrong aRtude. That someone is in need of a friend; they are in need of someone to talk to. The Bible says to treat others as you would want to be treated (Luke 6:31). If you were lonely and didn’t have a friend, would you want everyone to ignore you? No, you would want someone to show you mercy and be your friend. Show mercy to those who are in need and you will be shown mercy.
Props Homeless person costume (sweats, hat, few layers of random clothing), shopping cart filled with junk, can with coins, 3 cardboard signs (“No money, No food, please help!” “SICK” and “LONELY”)
Actors Homeless person
Sound Effects City street noises
Object Lesson 3Show mercy by treating others with love
PresentaHon: There are so many people in this world – people that you know – who are treated in this way:
(Actor enters, sits on the stage, and puts hands over her ears as the background voices play: “You’re a loser!”, “Get out of my way!”, “What are you doing here? You’re NOT invited!”, “Oh my gosh, it’s her again”, “Look at your hair, it’s so greasy”, “You’re pathe0c!”, “Come here right now!”, “Didn’t I tell you to stop?”)
None of us want to be treated like this; none of us want to be treated with disrespect, hurZul words, and abusive comments. We don’t want people to talk down to us; we don’t want to be made fun of or get picked on; we all want other people treat us with love. It is so important to us that people treat us with love and because of that, we should make sure that we treat others with love as well.
The Bible tells us that when Jesus saw people who were hurt and sick, He had compassion on them. That means he cared so much about how they felt, He didn’t only feel love for them but He went a step further and showed them – He treated them with love. Jesus wants for you to do the same.
I want all of you to think of someone you know who goes through tough =mes (teacher points at the actor). Think of someone you know who gets made fun of, someone who is lonely, or someone who is sick. That is a person that Jesus wants you to treat with love. He wants you to take the =me and speak kind words (show poster: Kind Words), if this person needs help, He wants you to help that person (show poster: Help), if this person needs friends, He wants you to be his or her friend (show poster: Friend).
The Bible tells us to treat others the way we would want to be treated (MaIhew 7:12). Think about how you want to be treated. Then you should decide to show mercy to others and treat them with love.

Life LessonRAY-RAY THE SUBWAY RAT
Frame 1: In the great big city where everyone runs around shopping, ea=ng, and working, there is another city that lies just beneath it called Ratopia. Every rat and his mother lives in Ratopia, including Ray Ray. Ray Ray was just a normal rat like all the other rats that enjoyed ea=ng and playing at the Canal St. train stop.
Frame 2: At the Canal St. train stop, humans would always throw wonderful toys and food into the tracks for the rats to eat and play with. One day while Ray Ray was searching for food at the train tracks, Rowdy Randy came around the corner. Ray Ray and Rowdy Randy never got along, ever since they were liIle rats. “What are you doing here,” voiced Randy. “I’m…I’m…looking for some food, do you have a problem with that?” answered Ray Ray. “Well listen -‐ it’s my =me to be here now. Your =me is up. Get lost!” Randy said as he pushed Ray Ray over the tracks and to the ground.
Frame 3: Ray Ray was so angry; he ran home and stormed into his liIle hole and into his father’s arms. Ray Ray loved spending =me with his father and his father loved spending =me with Ray Ray and taking care of him. “What’s wrong, Ray?” His father asked. “Randy thinks he can do whatever he wants. One day I will pay him back for everything he has done to me, that’s what I’ll do!” said Ray Ray. Ray Ray’s father looked at him and said, “Ray, I know about the hard =me Randy gives you but remember when you were just like Randy? You were the worst in your school. You got in trouble every day but I s=ll loved you. I want you to show mercy to Randy, just like I showed mercy to you.”
Preaching point: Show mercy to others and you will be shown mercy. Many of you have been picked on or hurt by someone before. No maIer what they’ve done or said, you need to show mercy to them just like God has shown mercy to you.
Frame 4: But Ray Ray wasn’t ready to show mercy. He was s=ll mad. The next day in school, Ray Ray was siFng behind Randy in class. As he sat there, he smelled something really bad. The smell was coming from Randy; he was wearing the same clothes he had been wearing all week! The whole class no=ced the smell and started laughing at Randy. Now was Ray Ray’s chance to show mercy to Randy, but he didn’t. He joined in with everyone else. “S=nky Randy, s=nky Randy. Ha ha! Why don’t you go home and take a bath, s=nky Randy!” laughed Ray Ray. Randy was so embarrassed. He grabbed his book bag and ran out of the classroom crying. “Finally Randy got what he deserves,” laughed Ray Ray.
Frame 5: But when Ray Ray got home from school, he wasn’t laughing anymore. He walked through the liIle hole to his house to see his father wai=ng for him with his arms crossed. “I just got off the phone with your teacher, Ray Ray. He said you were making fun of Randy. Is that how you show mercy to others?” asked Ray Ray’s father. “But he always makes fun of me,” explained Ray Ray. Ray Ray’s father took him on his lap and started to explain the situa=on, “Randy just lost his father. He and his mother are all alone and they have nothing. Instead of making fun of him, why don’t you give him some of your clothes that you don’t wear anymore?”
Frame 6: Ray went to his room thinking about what his father had said. He started to feel bad for Randy and his mom. He started going through his clothes and the ones that he never wore, he put in a bag for Randy (start pu5ng the clothes into a bag). Aher he had finished gathering some clothes for Randy, he grabbed the bag and started to walk over to Randy’s house (pick up the bag).

Life LessonRAY-RAY THE SUBWAY RAT
Frame 7: While he was walking he saw Randy looking for food by the train tracks. “Hey Randy, “yelled Ray Ray. “What do you want, you big jerk?” ques=oned Randy. “I know what I did earlier in school was wrong, so I brought you some clothes,” said Ray Ray. “I don’t need any of your stupid clothes,” said Randy as he threw the clothes to the ground (throw the bag of clothes). Ray thought to himself, ‘so much for showing mercy,’ and he pushed Randy. Randy and Ray Ray started pushing and punching each other. They were rolling around in the dirt, yelling names at each other. Ray Ray was so mad that he pushed Randy over the tracks as hard as he could.
Frame 8: Randy fell into the tracks but not only that, his leg was caught in them. Ray Ray started laughing, “Ha Ha, now what are you going to do? Finally you get what you deserve!”
Preaching Point: Show mercy to those who don’t deserve it.There may be people who have done wrong things to you. Maybe someone has hit you; maybe someone has hurt you; maybe someone has said wrong things to you. Many of you think they deserve the worst. If someone picks on you in school, they deserve to be punched in the face. If someone abuses you, they deserve to go to jail. But that’s the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches. The Bible teaches us to show mercy to others even when they don’t deserve it. Is that hard? Absolutely – and it was hard for Ray Ray too.
Ray Ray scurried up onto the plaZorm and looked down at Randy. He was about to turn and walk away when he heard a loud ”HONK! HONK!” A train was coming right towards Randy (start playing train sound effects). But Randy couldn’t move; his leg was s=ll stuck. “Help Ray Ray, please help me,” cried Randy. “Why should I help you?” shouted Ray Ray. “I’m sorry for everything, please forgive me!” cried Randy again. Ray Ray thought about it, but then remembered how he had tried to be nice to Randy by giving him clothes only to have Randy throw it back in his face. “No way. I’m not a sucker. I’m not gonna forgive you just so you can make a fool of me again! You’re gonna pay for it.”
Frame 9: The train was geFng closer (play sound effects louder, dim and flicker the lights). Randy was struggling with all his might to get out of the tracks. He wiggled, squirmed, twisted and turned, and at the last minute managed to free his foot and roll under the plaZorm away from the tracks. Randy was safe.
Frame 10: But as Randy was rolling to safety, the huge gust of wind from the train rushing through the tunnel caught Ray Ray off guard. He lost his balance; fell right into the tracks, and zooooooooooooom! The train ran straight over Ray Ray.
Point of DecisionWhat if Ray Ray had shown mercy to Randy a liIle bit earlier? They would both be alive. It’s hard to tell you about mercy because it’s so hard for me too. How do you show mercy to someone who’s hurt you? It’s hard, but we have to. Do you want God to show you mercy? Do you want him to show mercy when you make mistakes? Then you need to show mercy to others. This is how it works. Can you think of someone who’s hurt you? Today you need to make the choice that are you going to change your aRtude towards that person. Who wants to do that? Then pray with me.
Closing PrayerDear God, to be honest, my aRtude hasn’t always been the way the Bible says. Today I want to check my aRtude towards others. Help me to show mercy, to forgive those people who have hurt me. Help me to love my enemies. When I walk out these doors I want to live with an aRtude that shows mercy to others. Thank you for your mercy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
