Diabetes Mellitus

A disorder of the metabolism causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine.

Diabetes Mellitus

• Greek “Diabetes”, as ‘going through’ production of urine.

• ‘Mellitus’ comes from the Latin for honey.

‘Mellitus’ = Glucose

• A simple sugar that is an important energy source

• Insulin: regulates

carbohydrates and fats

Fasting Blood Glucose Test

• The patient does not eat for 12 hours (fasting)

• Blood sugar level is measured

• Healthy, then insulin reduces blood sugar levels

• Diabetes blood sugar remains high

Glucose Tolerance Test

• Patient fasts for 12 hours (eats nothing)

• Given 75gm of glucose

• Blood Glucose Level is measured after two hours

• Insulin in a normal patient would reduce blood sugar level

Glucosuria

• Tests if there is sugar in the urine

• Glucose not absorbed by kidney is released by urine
