Lesson #4: Irregular Verbs

• A verb is a word that describes an action or a state of being. It is usually the word right after the noun. Irregular verbs like the ones in this lesson don’t form the past tense by adding –d or –ed.

Awake/awoke/awoken

• Verb: to get up from sleep

• Alexis awoke at dawn to finish her homework.

Become/became/become

• Verb: To start to beStudying every night, Ian became a star student.

Bite/bite/bitten

1. Verb: To close your teeth around something2. Verb: To cut with your teeth

Keith broke off a piece of chicken to bite into.

Bring/brought/brought

1. Verb: To take someone or something with you2. Verb: To carry

Keri brought in cupcakes for her birthday.

Creep/crept/crept

• Verb: To move slowly and quietly• Hoping to scare Mrs. Harris, Trezure crept up behind her.

Find/found/found

• Verb: To discover or come across something• Kaylah and Ahnesti found a missing puppy.

Grind/ground/ground

• Verb: to crush something into a powder• Starbucks is popular because they grind their own coffee beans.

Leave/left/left

• Verb: To go away from or out of• Keshawn left school early and forgot his homework.

Rise/rose/risen

shed/shed/shed

1. Verb: To let something fall or drop off2. Verb: To give off

Spread/spread/spread

1. Verb: To cover a surface with something2. Verb: To unfold or sketch out

Luigiana likes to spread strawberry jelly on her toast.

Spring/sprang/sprung

• Verb: To jump suddenly; leap• Imani is fast; she sprang by all the girls in a class race.

Swing/swung/swung

• Verb: To move back and forth, especially on a hinge

• Isaiah swung high on the playset.

Tear/tore/torn

• Verb: To rip or pull apart: to make an opening

• Hussein tore open the bag of Takis and spilled them on the floor.

Understand/understood/understood

• Verb: To know what something means or how it works

• Yoseph understood the math problem and used his strategies to solve it correctly.
