Volume: Prisms and Cylinders

What you will learn!

1. How to find volume of prisms.

2. How to find volume of circular cylinders.

VolumeVolumeCylinderCylinder

What you really need to know!

To find the volume V of a prism, use the formula V = Bh, where B is the area of the base, and h is the height of the solid.

What you really need to know!

The volume V of a cylinder with radius r is the area of the base, r 2, times the height h, or V = r2h.

Example 1:

Find the volume of the prism:

V = Bh

B = 16 cm x 25 cm = 400 cm2

V = 400 cm2 x 8 cm

V= 3,200 cm3

Example 2:

Find the volume of the triangular prism:

V = Bh

B = ½ x 2 in x 5 in = 5 in2

V = 5 in2 x 3 in

V= 15 in3

Example 3:

Cake batter is poured into a pan that is a rectangular prism whose base is an 8 inch square. If the cake batter occupies 192 cubic inches, what will be the height of the batter?

V = Bh

Example 3:

Cake batter is poured into a pan that is a rectangular prism whose base is an 8 inch square. If the cake batter occupies 192 cubic inches, what will be the height of the batter?

192 in3 = 64 in2 •h

Example 3:

Cake batter is poured into a pan that is a rectangular prism whose base is an 8 inch square. If the cake batter occupies 192 cubic inches, what will be the height of the batter?

3 in = h

Example 4:

Find the volume of the solid.

Example 5:

Find the volume of the cylinder. Round to the nearest tenth.

V = Bh

B = • 72

V = • 49 • 14

V = 2,155.1 ft3

Example 5:

Find the volume of the cylinder. Round to the nearest tenth.

V = Bh

B = • 52

V = • 25 • 2

V = 157.1 m3

Diameter of base, 10m

Height 2 m
