MWIBAMWIBA WILDLIFE RESERVE
“MWIBA IS AN EXPRESSION OF MY FAMILY’S TREASUREDAFRICAN SAFARI TRADITION, ONE WHICH I WANTED TO
TRANSLATE INTO EVERY ASPECT OF OUR GUEST’S EXPERIENCE, FROM ARCHITECTURE TO DINING TO DÉCOR AND HOSPITALITY.”
~ Debra Friedkin ~
6 LEX SUMMER 2015
Since its debut, Mwiba has become one
of the most sought after destination in
the world. Mwiba is set among massive
stone boulders, amid ancient coral trees
and acacias, which overlooks a rocky
gorge on the Arugusinyai River. The
interiors of this stylish destination are
a collaboration of both traditional and
modern design elements with layer upon
layer of textured creams paired with
natural shades of suede, chocolate and
charcoal. From the linen dressed slope-
armed sofas to ornately carved-wood leg
tables and cascading lighting, the eight
double suites all give way to a wide-open
layout where each room fl ows to another.
“MWIBA WAS INSPIRED BY THE SITE’S UNIQUE, NATURAL ELEMENTS OF SPRING WATER, GRANITE STONE AND IMMENSE
VIEWS OF THE AFRICAN SAVANNAH WHICH ARE RECOGNIZED IN THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND DECOR.”

The philosophy for the bath is one of
nature, with traditional canvas walls
accented with copper fi xtures, large
soaking tubs with private outside
showers, all with transporting views
from hardwood plank decks. The grey
slate lined infi nity-edge pool overlooks
three springs where guests can enjoy
the sights and sounds of a constant
parade of wildlife. Vast and privately
controlled, this exquisite 130,000 acre
wildlife reserve is lush with color-infused
botanicals, saturated with wildlife and
features 33 freshwater springs. Game
drives, bush walks and cultural excursions
to the local tribe’s village are among the
experiences, passions and memories that
are the essence of this magical safari
lodge where a world of adventure awaits
you.
To the south of Mwiba lies yet another great escape,
Mwiba Tented Camp, which is artfully perched
above a collection of fi ve natural springs on a ridge
of granite kopjes, set among acacia woodlands. The
cool perennial spring waters below the camp attract
a wide assortment of wildlife throughout the day.
The classic six-tent safari camp is built on expansive
wood decks where at night subtle lighting gives way
to the observation of the nocturnal visitors to the
waterhole. Days are fi lled with exhilarating game
drives to view leopards, experience herds of elephant
on walking safaris, savor a bush lunch under a leafy
canopy or retire to one of the acacia tree platforms for
sundowners and an overnight stay.

The Mbono Tented Camp lies in the deep shade of the
acacia forest that lines the banks of the Mbono River.
This camp is strategically positioned at the point where
the river leaves the Serengeti National Park, meanders
southwest to its confl uence with the Simiyu River and
fi nds its way eventually to Lake Victoria. Moving west
from the southern Serengeti through Maswa Mbono,
the landscape transitions from the infi nite expanse of
the short grass plains to whistling thornscrub and then
into classic acacia savannahs, each habitat displaying
its own characteristic beauty. This permanent tented
camp has a natural aesthetic appeal with its simplistic
luxury of neutral interiors designed to provide every
comfort. The main gathering area is formal yet cozy,
with a lounge and dining space to accommodate any
size group. The imposing presence of nature makes
Mbono a special place where game drives and bush
walks will always provide wildlife encounters. Evidence
of ancient tribal cultures can be seen with a visit to the
Twa rock paintings nearby that are unique to this area.

Subeti Tented Camp is nestled on a scenic ridge high
above the surrounding plains of acacia woodland
with expansive views of the African bush. The camp
is ideally located in the southern Maswa Kimali Game
Reserve with easy access to other prime wildlife areas,
including the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro
Conservation Area and Mwiba Wildlife Reserve. The
essence of this camp is defi ned by minimalist interiors
in a sophisticated, yet classic and serene safari setting.
Game viewing is varied as both off -road driving and
bush walks allow guests to view the resident wildlife
from diff erent perspectives from their private safari
vehicle. Subeti off ers a sense of exclusivity as guests
share this pristine terrain with few others, away from
the bustling tourist areas. The varied landscape and
proximity to the Serengeti National Park make Subeti
and Maswa Kimali Game Reserve a premier destination
that will satisfy everyone’s sense of adventure.

The Malagarasi River forms the eastern boundary of
the Malagarasi Wildlife Reserve. Rising in Burundi, the
river fl ows directly south to the Malagarasi Swamp,
its confl uence with the Moyowosi River, then swings
west and on to the indigo waters of Lake Tanganyika.
Beautifully balanced, this one-of-a-kind tented
river camp is structured on over hanging hardwood
platforms along the edge of the western banks of the
Malagarasi River, the focal point of all wildlife activity.
Birding is phenomenal and noted observations include
the Pel’s Fishing Owl, Shoebill Stork, Palmnut Vulture
and Osprey. The Malagarasi River is known for its wide
variety of fi sh species including the ferocious tiger fi sh
and powerful giant catfi sh. Experience sport fi shing
by spinning or fl y rod from late July through the end
of October. Activities include wildlife encounters by
boat, vehicle and on foot in this stunning 635,000 acre
wildlife reserve.

Legendary Expeditions’ Tandala Tented Camp is
sited on ascending terraces, along a prominent
hillside with spectacular views of the surrounding
plains, Gelai and Kitumbeine Mountains and the active
volcano Ol Donyo Lengai. Winding pathways between
mammoth boulders and untamed brush lead to a
lantern-lit escape of open spaces and lofty, canvas
ceilings that take advantage of the cool breeze, all
fashionably furnished with a wide porch to take in the
amazing sunrises and sunsets.
The Natron concession, in the heart of Masailand, is
renowned for its wildlife, people and scenery. Bush
walks take place in vast commiphora and acacia
woodland, along dry river beds where some of the
rarer East African species, notably the lesser kudu,
gerenuk, Grant’s gazelle, fringe-eared oryx and African
wild dog, reside on this 1.1 million acre wildlife refuge.
An excursion to a Masai boma is an interesting event,
allowing a fascinating insight into their ancient culture,
traditions and lifestyle.

Gelai Cabin sits on the extinct volcano, Mount Gelai,
which is located in Tanzania’s Crater Highland Regions.
This picturesque retreat enjoys stunning views of Lake
Natron and Masailand. The bush is immensely varied,
ranging from montane rainforest to open grassland
and rocky hillsides. Narrow pathways created by the
resident buff alo, bushbuck, greater kudu, eland and
leopard dissect the forest.
This intimate, two bedroom cabin accommodates up
to eight guests living in total seclusion high above the
clouds in the African bush. At a height of 10,000 feet,
weather conditions on the mountain are marked by low
temperatures at night, and at times, mist and light rain
in the mornings. This destination is recommended for
the more athletic and adventurous with high altitude
hiking on steep mountain trails.

The Friedkin Conservation Fund (FCF)
was established in 1994 to conserve
more than 6.1 Million acres of Tanzania’s
protected wildlife areas. FCF conducts
eff ective anti-poaching operations,
innovative community development
programs and pioneering fi eld research
projects to protect Tanzania’s wildlife,
wilderness and communities. Tanzania’s
Protected Area Network is under
pressure from the unlawful destruction
of natural resources such as charcoal
burning, bush meat poaching and
commercial poaching for ivory. Relying
on a skilled team of 120 rangers,
microlight and helicopter pilots and
additional support staff , FCF conducts
year-round anti-poaching eff orts to
counteract this threat. Understanding
the need to coordinate development
programs and anti-poaching eff orts, FCF
addresses issues of poverty and human
pressure on natural resources in local
communities. FCF supports projects
directed at improving accessibility to
education, such as sponsoring students
as well as several income-generating
projects such as fi sh farming, beekeeping
and manufacture of local crafts. FCF also
conducts infrastructure building and
health initiatives to further strengthen
communities.
