TODAY’S PRESENTATION

1.  What are LEDs? 2.  Why should I switch to LED lighting? 3.  How do I choose the right LEDs? 4.  The Rebate Process

Focus on 4 Main Topics

1. WHAT ARE LEDS?

LIGHT BULB EVOLUTION

Incandescent Edison Lights

1879 CFL

Compact Fluorescent

Lights 1976

LED Light

Emitting Diode 1995

!  1907: “Electroluminescence” was discovered, i.e. material lighting up when electric current is applied

!  1962: Dim red LEDs developed !  1971: Green, orange and yellow

LEDs developed, but still dim !  1993: Bright blue LED developed !  1995: White LEDs hit the market

LED TECHNOLOGY

A Brief History

LEDS – WHERE ARE WE NOW?

! From the awkward, large and funny looking bulbs of just a decade ago…

! Now widely used in !  Commercial and residential lighting,

computer monitors and televisions !  Headlights, indicator lights, brake lights,

traffic lights, street lights

! Price has dropped in 15 years from $200 per unit to only 5¢ per unit

Evolution of the LED bulb

2. WHY SHOULD I SWITCH TO LED?

LOW ENERGY USE AND LONG LIFE

! Typical Household Bulb !  Incandescent

!  CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light)

!  LED

Compare Incandescent, CFL and LED

60 Watts 1,200 hour lifespan (around 1 year of

average use)

13-23 Watts 8,000 hour lifespan (around 6-7 years

of average use)

5-13 Watts 50,000+ hr lifespan

(over 40 years of average use)

LOW ENERGY USE AND LONG LIFE

!  Incandescent !  60 watts * 4 hours/day * 365 days/year * $0.13/kWh

!  CFL !  13 watts * 4 hours/day * 365 days/year * $0.13/kWh

!  LED !  8 watts * 4 hours/day * 365 days/year * $0.13/kWh

Calculate the savings

Annual Cost 1 bulb = $11.39/yr 20 bulbs = $228/yr

Annual Cost 1 bulb = $1.52/yr 20 bulbs = $30/yr Year after year…

Annual Cost 1 bulb = $2.47/yr 20 bulbs = $49/yr

WHAT ABOUT THE COST OF THE BULBS?

!  22 standard incandescent bulbs "$22 !  3 CFLs " $6 !  1 standard LED bulb " $5-$10*

It takes over 20 incandescent bulbs to last as long as 1 LED

*not including available rebates from AMP

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

! LEDs waste less energy as heat (which can also cause people to use their AC more!)

! LEDs don’t waste energy making light that is emitted in the “wrong direction”

OTHER BENEFITS

! Durable quality !  Don’t break easily !  Resistant to vibrations,

temperature and weather

! Come in a rainbow of colors

HOW DO LEDS COMPARE TO CFLS?

Comparison CFL LED

Work with most modern dimmers No Yes

Work in most enclosed fixtures No Yes

Can be turned on and off frequently without consequences

No Yes

Come on instantly No Yes

Sparkle in chandeliers or accent lighting No Yes

Emit UV light Some Almost none

Release Mercury if broken Yes No

HOW DO LEDS COMPARE TO HALOGENS? Comparison Halogen LED

Bright light that doesn’t fade Yes Yes

Operate on line voltage Yes Yes

Operate on low voltage Yes Yes

Good for landscape, desk lamps, chandeliers, accent lighting, etc.

Yes Yes

Bulb gets extremely hot to the touch Yes No

Longer life than incandescent About 2 ½ times longer

About 20-40 times longer

More efficient than incandescent By 10-20% By 80-90%

HALOGEN TORCHIERE LAMPS

! Very popular! !  Super bright, upward wash of light !  300-500 watts – lots of energy! !  Fire hazard – should be replaced

for safety

! Bright LED replacements are now on the market (3000 lumens)

Does anyone here have one of these?

3. HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT LED?

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

Light Output = LUMENS

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

Light Output = LUMENS

8.5 watts

800 lumens

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

! Until 200 years ago, we spent most of our waking time outdoors, now it’s the opposite!

! We used to be exposed to different color light at different times of day

Light Color

Mid-day light is blue, a “cool color”

Evening light is orange, or “warm color”

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

! Until 200 years ago, we spent most of our waking time outdoors, now it’s the opposite!

! We used to be exposed to different color light at different times of day

Light Color

Moonlight is also a cool blue

! Light Color affects our hormone production

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

Light Color

Well-being, reduction of carbohydrate craving, impulse

control and a healthy stress response

Promotes SLEEP…

DOPAMINE SERATONIN CORTISOL

Cool White MELATONIN

Warm White

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

! Color is measured on the CCT scale (Correlated Color Temperature) in degrees Kelvin

Light Color

“Daylight” bulbs ≈ 6500K

“Cool White” bulbs ≈ 4500-5000K

“Moonlight” bulbs ≈ 4000K

“Warm White” bulbs ≈ 2700-3000K

BUY BASED ON LIGHT OUTPUT & COLOR

Light Color

2700 K

LIGHT COLOR & HEALTH

! Tuning lighting to follow natural light patterns and our circadian rhythms !  Improves mood, productivity and sleep !  Studies in workplaces and schools show positive

results for daily light modulation

Human Centric Lighting

LIGHT COLOR & HEALTH

! You can buy and turn on different lights for different times of day !  Cool white or “daylight”

for mid day rooms !  Warm white for

evening rooms

! Use controls !  Tunable LEDs !  Computer app “f.lux” !  TV box “drift TV”
