Q: Why do you have to understand the 3 gunas?

A: Because to find God you must go beyond them.

ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਰੇ ਪਿਭ ਕਭੰਨ ॥ ਕਰਸਕਹ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਨਾਨਿਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁਪਿਸੰਨ ॥੧॥

He has no form, no shape, no color; God is beyond the three qualities.

They alone understand Him, O Nanak, with whom He is pleased. ||1||

What do the 3 gunas do?

• The three gunas;• Hold the body in place

• Keep us in the cycle of life and death

• Keep us in hopes and anxiety

• Cause fear and disease

• Make Surgun in to Maya via attachment to three gunas

• Can only be removed with Shabad- the sound of God’s voice

• ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ (three gunas/ qualities) are dormant in

ਸਰਗੁਨ (all forms).

•ਸਰਗੁਨ is called ਮਾਇਆ (Maya) when ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ (three

gunas) exist.

•Three gunas can also be called ਕਰਿਕਬਕਿ.

• ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ (three gunas) are thoughts.

• ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ is Maya ਮਾਇਆ•Maya ਮਾਇਆ is thoughts.

•Thoughts make Illusion and separate us from God.

The three qualities ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ of Maya ਮਾਇਆ are;

•Rago Guna-ਰਿ ਗੁਣ •Tamo Guna-ਰਮ ਗੁਣ •Sato Guna- ਸਰ ਗੁਣ

Everything in Surgun has the three guans, 3 qualities.

ਰਿੈ ਗੁਣ ਿੀਆ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ He formed the expanse of the entire universe from the three gunas, the three qualities.

ਖੰਡ ਬਿਹਮੰਡ ਰਿੈ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਚੇ ਕਿਨ ਲਾਗੀ ਹਕਰ ਕਲਵ ਰੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ ਿੀਅ ਿੰਰ ਸਭੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਚੇ ਨਾਚਕਹ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੀ ॥੫॥The planets and solar systems dance in the three qualities,

as do those who bear love for You, Lord.

The beings and creatures all dance, and the four sources

of creation dance. ||5||

ਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਮ ਗੁਣ ਸਰ ਗੁਣ ਿਹੀਐ ਇਹ ਰੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ Raj Guna, Tam Guna, Sat Guna, are all called the creations of Maya, Your illusion.

ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਿਉ ਿੋ ਨਰੁ ਚੀਨ੍ਹੈ ਕਰਨ੍ਹ ਹੀ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ That man

who realizes the fourth state - he alone obtains the supreme state. ||2||

ਕਰਹੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਕਵਆਕਪਆ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਕਖ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥The three worlds are entangled in the three qualities, O Siblings of Destiny; the Gurumukh imparts understanding.

ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੰਿੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਿੋ ਆਇਆ ਿਕਗ ਸੋ ਖੇਲੁ ॥ The three qualities hold the body in bondage; whoever comes into the world is subject to their play.

ਕਰਿਕਬਕਿ ਿਰਮ ਿਮਾਈਅਕਹ ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥While doing your work (karam kami) the three qualities, hope and anxiety are produced.

ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਿੋਕਨ ਫਾਸੇ ॥ ਇਕਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਿੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਕਸ ਿੀਨੇ ॥ ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਕਟ ਦੀਨੇ ॥Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.

This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.

Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.

ਭੈ ਿਉ ਭਉ ਪਕਿਆ ਕਸਮਰਰ ਹਕਰ ਨਾਮ ॥ Fear itself becomes afraid, when

the mortal remembers the Lord's Name in meditation.

ਸਗਲ ਕਬਆਕਿ ਕਮਟੀ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਿੀ ਦਾਸ ਿੇ ਹੋਏ ਪੂਰਨ ਿਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ All the

diseases of the three gunas - the three qualities - are cured, and tasks of the Lord's slaves are perfectly accomplished. ||1||Pause||

ਬਾਲ ਕਬਵਸਥਾ ਰੇ ਕਬਰਿਾਨਾ ॥ ਪਹੁਕਚ ਨ ਮੂਿਾ ਕਫਕਰ ਪਛੁਰਾਨਾ ॥੨॥ From childhood to old age,

the mortal does not attain his goals, and he comes to regret in the end. ||2||

ਕਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਕਹ ਵਰਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਨਰਿ ਸੁਰਗ ਕਫਕਰ ਕਫਕਰ ਅਉਰਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ The world is under the influence of the three qualities.

The mortal is reincarnated, again and again, into heaven and hell. ||3||
