PRESENT TENSE

First, let’s remember the pronouns!

The infinitive form of Turkish Verbs have the suffix –mek or –mak.

  Here are some basic verbs that we use in everyday life:

  Görmek (to see)   Okumak (to read)   Yazmak (to write)   Yapmak (to do/to make)   Sevmek (to like)   Bilmek (to know)   Yemek (to eat)

  İçmek (to drink)   Gitmek (to go)   Gelmek (to come)   Koşmak (to run)   Yürümek (to walk)   İzlemek (to watch)   Konuşmak (to speak)

The Suffix for the Present Tense is “-yor”

  Remember the standard suffixes for each pronoun?   Ben (suffix = -im)   Sen (suffix = -sin)   O (suffix = Ø)   Biz (suffix = -iz)   Siz (suffix = -siniz)   Onlar (suffix = -ler)

Conjugating to the present tense

  Just add –yor in front of the standard suffix:   Ben (suffix = -yorum)   Sen (suffix = -yorsun)   O (suffix = -yor)   Biz (suffix = -yoruz)   Siz (suffix = -yorsunuz)   Onlar (suffix = -yorlar)

 Notice how we used vowel harmony rules to construct these suffixes? (SO COOL.)

About –yor:

  The coolest thing about this suffix is that it doesn’t get affected by vowel harmonies. It is always –yor, NEVER –yör, -yur, -yür, or anything else.   Yürümek

 Root: yürü-  Ben yürü+yorum.

  When the root ends with a consonant, you will have to add a ‘buffer letter’ before applying the suffix to the word (ı, i, u, ü). To pick one, you need to use the vowel harmony rules.   Example: gelmek

 Root: gel-  Ben gel + i + yorum.

GÖRMEK (to see)

Ben gör ü yorum.

Sen gör ü yorsun.

O gör ü yor.

Biz gör ü yoruz.

Siz gör ü yorsunuz.

Onlar gör ü yorlar.

Common phrases:

  Rüya görmek = to ‘see’ a dream   Hayal görmek = to daydream

OKUMAK (to read)

Ben oku - yorum.

Sen oku - yorsun.

O oku - yor.

Biz oku - yoruz.

Siz oku - yorsunuz.

Onlar oku - yorlar.

Common phrases:

  Kitap okumak = to read a book   Dergi okumak = to read a magazine   Gazete okumak = to read the paper

YAZMAK (to write)

Ben yaz ı yorum.

Sen yaz ı yorsun.

O yaz ı yor.

Biz yaz ı yoruz.

Siz yaz ı yorsunuz.

Onlar yaz ı yorlar.

Common phrases:

  Mektup yazmak = to write a letter   Kitap yazmak = to write a book   Kompozisyon yazmak = to write a paper

YAPMAK (to do/make)

Ben yap ı yorum.

Sen yap ı yorsun.

O yap ı yor.

Biz yap ı yoruz.

Siz yap ı yorsunuz.

  Ödev yapmak = to do homework   Yemek yapmak = to cook (to make food)   Şaka yapmak = to make a joke   Resim yapmak = to draw (to make pictures)

SEVMEK (to like)

Ben sev i yorum.

Sen sev i yorsun.

O sev i yor.

Biz sev i yoruz.

Siz sev i yorsunuz.

Onlar sev i yorlar.

Common phrases:

  Seni seviyorum = I love you   Köpek sevmek = to like dogs/to pet a dog   Türkçeyi sevmek = to like Turkish

BİLMEK (to know)

Ben bil i yorum.

Sen bil i yorsun.

O bil i yor.

Biz bil i yoruz.

Siz bil i yorsunuz.

Onlar bil i yorlar.

Common Phrases

  (Dil) bilmek = to know a language. Örnek: Türkçe biliyorum.

YEMEK (to eat)

Ben yi - yorum.

Sen yi - yorsun.

O yi - yor.

Biz yi - yoruz.

Onlar yi - yorlar.

  Yemek yemek = to eat food

İÇMEK (to drink)

Ben iç i yorum.

  Çay içmek = to drink tea   Kahve içmek = to drink coffee   Bira içmek = to drink beer   Şarap içmek = to drink wine   Şerefine içmek = to toast. Örnek: Şerefine içiyorum!

Ben gid i yorum.

  Eve gitmek = to go home   Okula gitmek = to go to school   Derse gitmek = to go to class   Sinemaya gitmek = to go to the movies   Tiyatroya gitmek = to go to the theater

GELMEK (to come)

Ben gel i yorum.

Sen gel i yorsun.

O gel i yor.

Biz gel i yoruz.

Siz gel i yorsunuz.

  Eve gelmek = to come home   Derse gelmek = to come to class

KOŞMAK (to run)

Ben koş u yorum.

İZLEMEK (to watch)

Ben izli - yorum.

KONUŞMAK (to speak)

Ben konuş u yorum.

Sen konuş u yorsun.

O konuş u yor.

Biz konuş u yoruz.

Siz konuş u yorsunuz.

Onlar konuş u yorlar.

Common phrases

  (Dil) konuşmak = to speak a language. Örnek: Türkçe konuşuyorum.

  Güzel konuşmak = to speak beautifully

Making verbs negative

  In order to make a verb negative, we add the suffix –me or -ma after the root. Örnekler:

  Görmemek (to not see)   Okumamak (to not read)   Yazmamak (to not write)   Yapmamak (to not do/to not make)   Sevmemek (to not like)   Bilmemek (to not know)   Yememek (to not eat)

  İçmemek (to not drink)   Gitmemek (to not go)   Gelmemek (to not come)   Koşmamak (to not run)   Yürümemek (to not walk)   İzlememek (to not watch)   Konuşmamak (to not speak)

But how do we conjugate these negative verbs?

Example verb: gitmemek (to not go) 1.  Get rid of –mek or –mak.

1.  Gitme-

2.  We are adding the suffix –iyor. So, get rid of the e or a at the end.

1.  Gitm-

3.  Add –iyor/-ıyor/-üyor/-uyor. 1.  Gitmiyorum. (I am not going.)

  Basically, you just add an m after the root/before the present tense buffer+suffix.

YEMEMEK (to not eat) YEME- YEM-

Ben ye mi yorum.

Sen ye mi yorsun.

O ye mi yor.

Biz ye mi yoruz.

Siz ye mi yorsunuz.

Onlar ye mi yorlar.

YAPMAMAK (to not do/make) YAPMA- YAPM-

Ben yap mı yorum.

Sen yap mı yorsun.

O yap mı yor.

Biz yap mı yoruz.

Siz yap mı yorsunuz.

KOŞMAMAK (to not run)

Ben koş mu yorum.
