Card Exercise

Purpose: To help illustrate the impact of batching and the advantages of one piece flow.

What you need:3x5 cards (white & colored), pens, and a flipchart (or whiteboard)

Time: 15 minutes

• Round 1– You are in the business of crossing out

numbers.– The sheet in front of you represents your

current work environment.

– You have 30 seconds to cross out in sequential order the numbers 1 – 49 on your sheet.

• Round 2– We have accomplished the first S: Sort.

– The numbers 50-90 have been removed as they were not needed.

– You have 30 seconds to cross out in sequential order the numbers 1 – 49 on your sheet.

in Order.– The number 1 is in the bottom left hand

corner.

– The numbers run bottom to top and left to right.

scrubbing if for the accountants.– We have accomplished the forth S:

Standardize.

– The numbers 1-49 have been re-organized in a much more standard and logical way.

– You have 30 seconds to cross out in sequential order the numbers 1 – 49 on your sheet.

environment.– A quality problem has been discovered,

two numbers are missing.

– 30 seconds equals one shift of work.– Find the two missing numbers and record

how long it took you.

Numbers Game - Debrief

• Demonstrates the length of time spent searching for “something” in an environment.

• Does not explain the mechanics of 5S.• Can use to educate executive

leadership on the impact of a 5S project – it’s not just a “feel good” project.
