Fordham Wifi & the future

January 2014

Preparing for #GenMobile

Fordham WifiHistory 2000/2001

- Initiated volunteer program with 13 donated- AP’s at Lincoln Center Campus- Distributed 25 PCI Wifi cards- WEP encryption- Each student had 1 laptop maybe a PDA (Palm and Newton). Not networked - Minimal cellular usage and no smart phones. - No Youtube, Facebook or Skype

Usage stats for SSIDs FORDHAM-IT-S, FORDHAM400, FORDHAM400-S, FORDHAMCC, FORDHAMCC-S, FORDHAMLC, FORDHAMLC-S, FORDHAMRH, FORDHAMRH-S

- Replaced over 200 802.11 abg(11 to 23Mbs) access points within residence halls with 802.11ac(30 to 1Gbs)

- Planned the next stage of replacementsFinley Hall, McMahon Hall and Loyola renovation

2.4Ghz Interference and Rogues

- Too many 2.4 AP’s and other devices sharing the same limited channels- Reduce the coverage of 2.4Ghz b/g and rebrand for legacy support.

New devices that support 802.11n on 5Ghz will be steered to 5Ghz channels

More devices will be networked with cheaper 2.4 radios. Will probably be low bandwidth

Preparing for

#GenMobileGeneration Mobile

Because tweeting on smartphones and browsing on tablets while brushing our teeth has become the norm.

Who would have thunk it?

What to expect

#GenMobile are so attached to their mobile devices that they are 15 times more likely to give up coffee and seven times more likely to say goodbye to their televisions than their beloved smartphones.

Wi-Fi is now expected to be the primary service delivery network, capable of high performance with guaranteed service level agreements.

- Continue to replace older 802.11abg AP with the next standard(802.11ac) as soon as possible- Steer devices to 802.11n/5Ghz primarily and secondarily to 802.11n/2.4 - Acquire a more aggressive stance against rogue devices- Move towards video and voice support
