Literature review: Leading IT innovation in healthcare

• Structured literature review

• Key words: managing telehealth, managing ehealth, inspirational leadership

• 23 papers included in review (out of 545)

Leaders: Create a vision• Creating a vision is a way

to increase leaders influence by generating enthusiasm and leads to increased engagement in hospital nurses

• Shared vision generates positive sense of challenge and optimism both correlated with success (Hayati et al 2014)

Along with vision, female leaders in health also have a drive to fulfill their vision and inspire others to fulfill the vision too(Folta et al 2012)

Leaders: Communicate with passion and authenticity

• Communication and collaboration is crucial to successful implementation of telehealth and eHealth innovation (Singh et al 2010, Wu et al 2014)

Female public health leaders demonstrated authentic passion for positive change in their communities through altruistic definitions of success and persistence in the face of adversity(Folta et al 2012)

Leaders: Inspire the team

• Engagement of nurses was positively influenced by leaders who were able to transmit their inspirational motivation to them (Hayati et al 2014)

Inspirational leaders established zeal with optimism for attaining success (Hayati et al 2014)

Leaders: Empower individuals

• During health system reform empowerment of individuals is a key strength of positive leadership (Aarons et al 2011)

An empowering health workplace has a positive impact on staff retention (Aarons et al 2011)

Organisations: Create frameworks for implementation

• Vague eHealth strategy is a barrier to implementation

• Developmental frameworks are needed to create a holistic, need and evidence based eHealth strategy (Scott & Mars 2013)

Guideline type framework more useful than conceptual or rationale based framework (van Gemert-Pijnen et al 2011)

Organisations: Nominate innovation champions within the team

• Local innovation champions cultivated participation in telehealth by over coming perceived barriers to implementation through opportunistic exploitation of options and communication (Singh et al 2010)

Organisations: Set goals to measure implementation

• Creating goals facilitates achievement of steps towards execution and helps measure the execution process (McChesney et al 2012)

Lack of published research on impact of goal setting for eHealth innovation implementation

Organisations: Celebrate success

• Keep a compelling scoreboard then celebrate team success (McChesney et al 2012)

Lack of published research on impact of celebrating success for eHealth innovation implementation

Conclusion

• IT innovation in health is a continuously evolving opportunity to enhance the quality of healthcare and increase capacity within health systems

• Leaders and organisations can be highly influential in engaging their nursing teams to embrace IT innovation

• Consideration of change management and implementation strategies relating to IT innovation in other service industries may be useful in health
