Week of 8 July 2018 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Consecrated to Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii is a place to pray for peace that embraces all people of faith. A center of hospitality and spiritual growth, the Shrine’s ministry is one of spiritual assistance and service where all might experience inspira-tional moments of prayer, comfort and contemplation. Located on Chicago’s Near West Side, the Shrine is a gift of the Italian-American community to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Our mission is to dedicate our resources to healing, prayer and pilgrimage.

TODAY:
Second Sunday Feeding God’s Holy Family
FOOD DRIVE (Details, page 6)
T he term shrine signifies a church or other sacred place to which the faithful make
pilgrimages for a particular pious reason with the approval of the local ordinary. At shrines, more abundant means of salvation are to be provided for the faithful; the Word of God is to be carefully proclaimed; liturgical life is to be appropriately fostered especially through the celebration of the Eucharist and penance; and approved forms of popular piety are to be cultivated.
Code of Canon Law, 1230 and 1234
Le Decine del Rosario is the Italian phrase for decades of the rosary, representing the twenty decades of the rosary, for which our weekly bulletin is named.

Praying with St. Mary Magdalene ‘Apostle to the Apostles’
A Morning Retreat
Saturday, July 21 * 10 - 11:30 a.m.
As the first witness to the resurrected Jesus, Mary Magda-lene, was entrusted to carry the heart of Jesus to others.
How can we continue to carry the love of Jesus to those we meet in everyday life? How does the story of Mary Magdalene translate to the lives of men and women today? What do we know about this woman who has been called “Apostle to the Apostles”? Share conversation, reflection, and creative prayer.

Saturday, August 4 9 - 10:30 a.m.
Join us as we gather to pray with Mary and take a closer look at the Salve Regina prayer. The Salve Regina is a prayer for all people - whether you are in a place of peace or at a crossroads.
Bring your prayers of joy and sorrow as we pray together and share the company of Mary, Mother of Mercy.
We will meet on the front steps of the Shrine and walk across the street to Arrigo (Peanut) Park for a slow paced conversation and reflection on Mary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battle-field,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crime-an War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred
sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless.
After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and grati-tude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They com-forted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.”

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that
we are born again to eternal life.
Please join us at our 2018 Benefit Dinner for an evening of fun and fellowship
as we honor the legacy of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini,
by celebrating the contributions and lives of immigrants.
