The Motivation Breakthrough:6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out ChildA workshop for parents and educators with Richard Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed.

Wednesday, February 23, 2011 6:30 PM – 9:00 PMEcole Secondaire Etienne-Brule 300 Banbury Road, North York, ONEvery learning theory from Maslow to Gardner has "motivation" as its initial and fundamental step. However, few teachers have a repertoire of effective motivational strategies and techniques. In theclassroom we tend to use a "one size fits all" approach by attempting to motivate all students withone single reward system, star chart or grading policy. This workshop presents an innovative andfield-tested model that enables teachers to better understand and foster student motivation at allgrade levels.

The workshop begins with an exploration of some of the common misconceptions related to studentmotivation and some of the common strategies that are, simply, ineffective (competition, rewardsystems, punishment). Specific approaches and strategies will then be presented that will enableteachers and parents to motivate students…and maintain that motivation throughout the school year.

This workshop, based on the book by the same name, will help teachers and parents understandthe three basic truths about classroom motivation, encourage teachers to examine and identify eachchild’s “motivational” style, design motivational strategies that will inspire the child to reach his or herpotential, and translate this information into pragmatic classroom strategies.
