A Designer’s Mind

This portfolio presents a brief insight to my artistic life from 2010 - 2013.

Designing can allow a sense of security and a form of escapism from the ‘real world’. Staring into a dark black theatre and trying to envision your design can sometimes be

daunting and you may feel a sense of fear. However, such fear is the essence of pushing my creativity to the next level.

As a designer, a challenge which I always set myself is to create a series of impressions for the audience

which will leave them questioning ways of life from the past, the present and in the future.

My research utilises a range of different sources, including: personal experience, historical events and artwork and even contemporary art. Additionally I

look at social, political and cultural movements, analysing the work of past and present designers. Most importantly, is the excitement I find in

looking through books from different periods which form their own towers on my desk.My work includes: Costume Design, Set Design, Model Making, Illustrations

and installations.

This book is dedicated to my Grandad, Gerard Whitty who encouraged mycreative passion and devotion for theatre.

This performance translates the ways we find peace amongst the hubris and commotion of our contemporary environment.

For inspiration for this brief I explored the diverse cultural influences shaping our lives such as technology, discrimination, evolution, war...and how the decisions we make

about these issues will inevitably shape our possible futures.

I realise we are all part of systems which reflect our own beliefs and experiences which, along with our history, converge to create our own future as well that of the entire

civilisation, The juxtaposition of all these elements will determine the possible outcome for our planet.

What impact will we allow technology to have on the human race? What will we allow the world to become?

Everything will change, but how?
