20TH-CENTURY NE0-CONQUEST? Brazil via New York/Oxygen Share

Brazil via New York/Oxygen Share is an urgent plea for attention to the rapidly disappearing treasure of the Amazo- nian forest that provides one-fifth of the world's oxygen. The fact that the earth supports life makes it unique in the universe. The rich variety of living things is a product of eco-

system diversity that provides the delicate balance between the linked inhabitants of the forest: plants, animals, and humans. The twentieth-century neo-conquest and destruc- tion of the Amazon now taking place is motivated by greed. The conquerors should learn from the indigenous inhabitants that it is possible to use the forest and not destroy it.

JONAS DOS SANTOS has lived in the United States since 1968. He has exhibited and performed in museums, galleries, alternative spaces, and universities in the U.S., Mexico, and Brazil.
