MEASURES Suryaveer Singh PGT Geography

Causes of Land Degrada;on -‐ 1
Mining ac:vi:es
• Mining sites are abandoned a=er excava:on work is complete leaving deep scars and traces of over-‐burdening.
• In states like Jharkhand, ChhaGsgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa deforesta:on due to mining have caused severe land degrada:on.
Causes of Land Degrada;on -‐ 2 • In states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra overgrazing is one of the main reasons for land degrada:on.
• In the states of Punjab, Haryana, western UNar Pradesh, over irriga:on is responsible for land degrada:on due to water logging leading to increase in salinity and alkalinity in the soil.

Mineral processing Industrial effluents
• The mineral processing like grinding of limestone for cement industry and calcite and soapstone for ceramic industry generate huge quan:ty of dust in the atmosphere. It retards the process of infiltra:on of water into the soil a=er it seNles down on the land.
• In recent years, industrial effluents as waste have become a major source of land and water pollu:on in many parts of the country.
Conserva;on of Land Resources -‐ 1
Afforesta:on Shelter belts of plants
• Afforesta:on and proper management of grazing can help to some extent.
• Plan:ng of shelter belts of plants,

Controlling overgrazing Stabilising sand dunes
• Control on overgrazing,
• Stabilisa:on of sand dunes by growing thorny bushes.

Management of waste lands Controlling mining ac:vi:es Proper disposal
• Proper management of waste lands,
• Control of mining ac:vi:es,
• Proper discharge and disposal of industrial effluents and wastes a=er treatment.
