• Skills that lead to future success:• The ability to form caring relationships with other people;• To cooperate with others;• To share;• To listen to others;• To use self-control (emotion self-regulation);• To pay attention;• To follow directions.
• Behavior & social problems in preschool predict academic problems in elementary (i.e. – language & literacy competencies).• Pro-social behavior: behavior intended to help others.• Teacher can encourage children to be pro-social
Caring & Peaceable Children
• 6 goals to model:1. Value each person’s integrity2. Reach out to people in caring ways; model altruism3. Respect human differences4. Demonstrate how to serve & care for others5. Charitable behavior; teach: it feels good to give6. Develop & express a belief in the goodness of people.
Social Learning/Albert Bandura (1925/ Canada)
• Humans learn through social interactions (imitation).
• Children have control over their own behavior and behavior of those around them.
• Distinguishes between the acquisition and performance of new responses.
Imitation of behavior is based on 4 components:
a) Attentional Processes
b) Retention Processes
c) Motor reproduction processes
d) Reinforcemnt/Motivational Processes
