C RO CHE T -LAC ECHANCES in fashion have at times created a craze for crochet-lace while at
other times it has been mideservedly neglected. Being easy to work andlending itself to various appUcations it should keep a prominent place
among ladies' handicraft.
Crochet-lace is easy to make since equipment is limited to one crochet hook, and the basic stitches are few. Even complicated-looking instructions are so,
only in appearance. We recommend ovu" readers to consult frequently thesketches that go with each instruction so as to check their work as they go along.
The only difficulty for certain models might be because of the finer threads.
In order to enable beginners to get progressively used to the work, we ha\earranged the models so as to begin ^\ith those requiring the thicker threads as
used for finnishing and end with the finer ones as used for Irish lace, passing
through the intermediate sizes as used for household linen.

The crochet hooks used for lace are made of steel. They are about 5 in. long
and are flat in the middle which makes them easy to hold. Their size is markedon the flat part and the highest nmnbers indicate the finest hooks. The steel
hooks should be smooth and polished. They are better after having been used
some time. Keep them dry so that they do not rust.
BASIC STITCHESNearly all crochet starts with a length of chain-
stitches.
Hold the crochet hook horizontal, between the three
first fingers of the right hand, the point to the left.
The left hand guides the thread. Throw the thread
from the back, forwards, over the hook, between the
loop and the point of the hook. By pulling to the
right, the thrown thread passes through the loops and
forms a new stitch ; contrary to knitting there is only
one free loop, which permits undoing and remaking
the work easily.
The ist row is worked by inserting the hook in the
stitches of the chain, the following ones by inserting
the hook under the loops made by the head of the
preceding row. Except when indicated otherwise,
insert hook under these two loops. When one inserts
only underneath the back loop, one obtains a hori-
zontally ribbed stitch, sometimes used to get certain
effects.
Chain-Stiteh ; Make one sUploop, pass the hook through it,
pass the thread around the hook andpull it through loop. Continue until
required length is obtained.
«J Sinejio C'i'Ofhet : Make twochain stitches, i loop passed in
the 1st *. Then make one stitchinserted under the loop on the left ofthe one first finished. Repeat from *.
JJl>oiiblo erofUet : Insert, passthread aroimd hook, pull one
loop, pass thread around hook anddraw it through the 2 loops.
_g Hall treblearound hook.
: Pass threadinsert, pull one
loop, pass thread around hook anddraw aU at once through the 3 loops.
^ Treble : Pass tliread aroundhook, insert, pull one loop. Pass
thread aromid hook and pass through2 loops, pass tliread around hook anddraw through the 2 last loops.
One makes the double, triple andquadruple trebles, etc., by taking thethread one, two, three or four timesover the hook before inserting. SUploo{>s one after the other, one at a
time and pass thread around hookbetween each.
,Sometimes one finishes ofE severaltrebles together to obtain a pointedeffect. To do that you keep on thehook the last loop of each treble.
After the last treble pass the threadarovmd the hook and draw it in onesingle pull through all the loops onthe hook.
^ Fiiiisliinji stiteli or slip stitch:
Insert, pull one loop and drawit through the ist loop.

WORKING INSTRUCTIONS
To iiuti I'l-ii.
WTien one row is finished, turn the work and make a 2nd row on the 1st as abase. Between each row, make one or several ch. st. to give the height of therow on the edge. The nvmiber of those st. is proportional to the height ofthe St. employed. Do not forget either the ist nor the last st. of the row.
When the work consists of loops as open work, do not forget to add to the numberof ch. st. of the first opening the st. needed for turning. This hai of ch. st. does not comit as a stitch.
Work on the flat.
Some St. should be worked only on one side. The thread must then be cut atthe end of each row and attached on the right. The same effect (work on oneside only) is obtained when working in a circle or around squares. Be careful tofinish oft" each round and never work in a spiral. The way to finish off eachround is explained in the course of each instruction, as well as the centre of theroses.
Increasing and decreas^ing.
In Lace work, the increasuig and decreasing are part of the design and explained^\^th each. For any other work: the increasing is done by inserting twice in
the ist and in the last st. if one wants to increase by 2 st. on each row. Thedeer, is done by missing the 1st or the last stitch of the row or both if needed.

KNITTED LACEThe lace done with knitting needles differs from ordinary knitting in the fol-
lowing ways:
• By the lightness obtained by nsing fine t\\dsted thread, worked with rather
thick nee(_Ues.
• By the combination of st. containing many decreases wdth compensatingopen work forming the design. The instructions must be very carefully
followed.
• By the tension of the finished work, and the starchuig that makes it keep its
shape, once dried (see page 48).
i( THREADS FOR K A' I T T K D LACE
For the knitted lace, one should use threads that are heavily t^wsted, smoothand brilliant. «-ith which the work will be easy and pleasant:
• The (. CORD BRILLIANT CROCHKT COTTON C-B "A LA CROIX"fart. 2_'i), balls of 20 gr.. in white, natural or black, in the Nos lo to 130.
• THE BRILLIANT IRIvSH THREAD C-B "A LA CROIX" (art. 220),
spools of 23 .gr., in white and natural, in the Nos 20 to 140.
• BRILLIANT CROCHET THREAD C-B "A LA CROIX" (art. 285), balls
of 5 gr.. in various colours, fast to light and washing, in N'^ 70.
^ X E E DEES
This lace requires rather tliin needles usually made of steel. The needles used
for lace are generally coarser in respect to the thread, than those used for
ordinary knittmg, so as to make the lace light and transparent, 2 needles are
enough for lace "by the yard", knitted by going to and fro. For the ro.ses
and the bordering start with a set of 3 needles. Then, when the niuuber of
St. g^o^^s, use a circular needle, which must be very smooth, and which enables
you to work without stopping. The steel needles are nmnbered according to
standard sizes. One must choose the needle size according to the type of work,
the thread used and one's wa-\' of knitting.
33
BASIC STITCHES• CASTING OX THK STITCHES. — 1st method:
2 needles and 1 thread (fig. A ). Make a loop and put it on the
I. h. (left hand ) needle ; insert the right needle, pass thread round
point of r. h. (right hand ) needle, pull the loop through and plaee
it on the I. h. needle, go on like-wise : one oljtains a row of loose
loops, easy to piek up.
2nd method: J needle and 2 threads (fig. B). Fold the thread,
leaving a piece of a length in proportion to the number of st. to
cast on. Hold the measured thread in the left hand, the thread from
the ball in the right. Fortn round the left thumb a loop into witich
the needle is inserted. Pass right tJiread round point of needle,
pull out a loop, which makes the first stitch. Go oil to the length
wanted. This method gives a >ieat and solid base.
Knil or plain stiU-li (fig. C). Insert the r. h.
needle into the ist st. Pass tlie tliread round that
needle and pull out a loop through the st., loop which
is kept on the r. h. needle, letting slip the st. on the
1. h. needle.
Purl sliU'h (fig. I)). Pa.ss the thread in front
of the work, insert the r. h. needle from back to front,
whid the thread downwards and draw it tlirough the
St. front to back.
Twisted slileli. Put the needle in the 2nd or
back loop of the stitch, the one at the back of the 1. h.
needle, and not in front, as for the ordinary st.
Thus the St. is twisted.
(h-owscd sliU-lics. Pass tlie needle in front of
the first st. of the 1. h. needle, knit the jnd .st. then
the ist, .slipping them together off the 1. h. needle.
Tlifcad forward. Pass the thread on the r. h.
needle from back to front. In next row, this is
knitted like an ordinary st.
Thi-<>a<l forward and roiinti nee«llr. Windthe thread on the r. h. needle twice from back to front.
In the next row, knit one stitch hke this, then one purl.
34
HOW TO WORK'V» an«l fro (laces and Insertions "by the yard"). Thesfare worlcL-d in their smallest diiueiisioii, with two needles. Turnthe work at the end of eaeh row. For the base of the hue Lind
the two edges of the insertions, the rows start nsiiallv with
:
shp one .st., knit one st.
Ill a oii-flc (roses entirely In knitting). These are usually
started from the eentre. \\'ork with a set of five needles the
sts being east on evenly on four of them. Bceause of tlie dif-
ficulty in ca.sting on at the beginning, it is convenient to start
with a crochet-hook, ea,sting on all the st, on a length of thread,
picking them up to di.striljute them on the needles.
Work off the needles one by one all round as for a stocking, that
is always on the right side. It will be ad\'isable, as soon as the
size of the work permits, to put a mark with a coloured thread to
show where the circles begin.
I'"or the larger roses you use two sets of needles or one circular
