Lab Exercise 10

Dissection of The Fetal Pig By Samson M.; Ph.D.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the major cavity and the organs contained in

each.

2. Identify the major internal organs of the fetal pig.

3. Describe the function of specific systems.

Fetal Pig Dissection

• In this exercise, you will study the basic organization of

mammals through the dissection of a fetal (unborn) pig

• The purpose of the dissection is to expose the various

organs for study

• Your dissection will focus on the internal organs located in

the ventral (toward the belly) body cavity

Anatomical Terms

• Superior above (toward the top)

• Medial toward the middle

• Inferior underneath, below (toward the bottom)

• Lateral towards the side (away from the middle)

Anatomical Terms

• Dorsal (posterior) toward the back, toward the rear

• Anterior toward the front

• Proximal closest to the point of attachment

• Distal away from or farther away

Body Cavities

• Thoracic Cavity houses the lungs and heart

• Abdominopelvic Cavity houses the stomach, liver, spleen,

gallbladder, small and a large intestines, urinary bladder, and

the internal reproductive organs.

• Thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity separated by diaphragm

Membranes

• Pleura (or pleural membrane) surrounds the lungs

• Pericardium (or pericardial membrane) surrounds the

heart

• Peritoneum (or peritoneal membrane) surrounds all the

organs within the abdominopelvic cavity

Organ Systems

• Digestive System breakdown of food substances into

simpler forms that can be absorbed (digestion).

• Circulatory S. transports materials throughout the body

• Urinary System removes ("filters") wastes from the blood.

and helps maintain the body's water and electrolyte balance.

Organ Systems

• Respiratory System exchange of gases between blood

and air.

• Reproductive System it is responsible for the production of

whole new organisms like itself.
