1. Meter Stick

• Measures distance. • Be sure to measure in

cm or m, not in inches.• 1 m or 100 cm

2. Safety Goggles

• Protects eyes from chemical spills and hot liquids.

3. Thermometer

• Measures heat (kinetic) energy of an object.

4. Pipette

• Transfer known amounts of liquids from one container to another.

• Draws liquids out of containers by squeezing the bulb, creating a vacuum.

5. Test Tube Holder

• Grasps hot test tubes.

6. Bunsen Burner

• Heat and boil non-flammable liquids and to melt solids.

• Are connected to a rubber hose which carry natural gas.

7. Funnel

• Allows liquids to be poured into smaller containers

• Helps separate mixtures

8. Spring Scale

• Measures mass and force on an object

9. Glass Stirring Rod

• Mixes two substances together.

10. Erlenmeyer Flask

• Mix and measure liquids and pour them into other containers

11. Tongs

Are used to grasp and carry hot glassware

12. Graduated Cylinder

Measure the volume of liquids, or how much space the liquid takes up

13. Balance

• Used to find the mass of materials

14. Test Tube Rack

• Holds test tubes.

15. Beaker

• Probably the most common vessel for holding liquids in the laboratory.

17. Ring Stand

• Used in many lab activities as the support for other apparatus.

18. Iron Ring with Wire Mesh

• Attached to ring stand to use as support for a beaker.

• Wire mesh - often placed over the iron ring and holds lab equipment.

19. Hot Plate

• Used for heating liquids.
