LA PLAZA MAYOR

Name The name of La Plaza

Mayor has changed alot, some of the names that has received were:

Plaza del Arrabal, Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Real, and Plaza de la Republica, but nowdays it is called La Plaza Mayor.

LOCATION La Plaza Mayor is

situated in the center of Madrid, it is very near of the square Puerta del Sol and it is also near to the square of the Villa together the street Mayor.It is also known as the main square.

PHILIP II AND PHILIP III

Philip II was the men who sent build the Plaza Mayor, but Philip III was who sent finish te square.

HISTORY

It was constructed in the XV century, at this time it was known as "Plaza de Arrabal", In the XVI century after the capital of Spain was moved to Madrid. The construction of the firs building was in the 16th century and it was finish in the 17th century.

FRONT

The squere has a rectangular plant which have three plants with 237 balconies.

It has 19 accesses which te most famous is the “Arco de Cuchillos”.

EL ARCO DE CUCHILLEROS

El Arco de Cuchilleros is the most famous door of the square. It is located in the southwest and it is very tall.

It was built by Juan de Villanueva in 1790.

STATUE OF PHILIP III

This statue is located in the centre of the square, Juan de Bolonia began to build it and Pietro Tacca finish in 1616.

It was a present for the king.

USES Some uses of the

Plaza Mayor were: A scenery of many

public acts like for example bullfighting, "autos de fe" and it was scene of public executions.

And also the people use it for the trade and they solt and bought a lot of aliments.
