Dear Members,
Our Synagogue might be small but we all
know how to party and party we did the last
Saturday of February for Joyce Spiegel, who
turned 85. Her actual birthday was March 1
but her family was all able to get together on
this Shabbat. It was an incredible Gala event
and we found out so many interesting things
about Joyce. Keep up the good work Joyce
because you don’t look your age at all. Thank
you so much for all you do for B’nai Shalom.
Rumor has it that another member of
our Congregation turned 80 in February.
Congratulations Roberta Maimes.
B’nai Shalom celebrated the second
Passover Seder on Saturday April 23, 2015
at 6:00 P.M. What an incredible time we all
had. Delicious food, dancing and we even
had a Passover Seder Rap song.
Many thanks go to Naomi & Bill Stein,
Joyce Spiegel, Fern Levine and Muriel Kaplan
for helping prepare that wonderful meal.
Special thanks to Robert Cohen and his son
Andrew for helping, with the breakdown of
tables and set up of the chairs, after the meal.
This Seder was truly a community event.
Please let me know if you care to join in and
help for any of our synagogue events, Rabbi
Silverman led the Seder and it was the best
ever. This was such a treat since we heard our
Rabbi’s stories, he told us some great jokes,
and of course Bobbie crossed us all over the
Red Sea in dance.
On Saturdays May 14 & 28, 2016 at 10:00
A.M. Rabbi Silverman will lead us in services
followed by lunch and learn.
You will be receiving an e-mail to fill you
in on the dates for our summer Havurahs.
Also you will be receiving a notice for our
Annual General Membership Meeting in
June.
On behalf of the Board of Directors we
want to wish you all a Happy Summer.
Shalom,
Martin Hodes D.D.S.

At the beginning of March, a number of “pop-tab coordinators” met to make another pop-tab submission. Together, we submitted another 42 pounds! We have been collecting pop-tabs from soda cans for the last few years. We give them to the Daughters of the American Revolution and for every pound that we give to them, the DAR pays for a needy family to stay at the Ronald McDonald House free of charge. The Ronald McDonald House is across the street from Rady Children’s Hospital and allows parents to spend the night close to their ill children. To date, we have given the DAR 703 pounds of pop-tabs. That’s 703 nights at the Ronald McDonald House free of charge to families who need a place to stay! What a mitzvah! Keep those pop-tabs coming!
I would like to thank everyone for joining myself and my family, in celebration of my 85th birthday party. many thanks to all who participated in my gift and helped with shopping and setup. A special thanks to our president Dr. Martin Hodes and of course to our wonderful Rabbi Hillel Silverman.
Love, Joyce

A Message from our Rabbi
Havurah Scheduled - Sunday, June 12 @2pm
Shalom, The period of 49 days between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot is a very special time. It is called S’fira or the counting of the Omer. We count each day individually from Passover until we reach the 49th day which is Shavuot. Passover commemorates the exodus from Egypt, freedom from the slavery and oppression of Pharaoh. Shavuot recalls the revelation on Mt. Sinai of the Ten Commands and the ethical and ritual law of the Torah. Physical emancipation (Passover) is not enough. We need spiritual emancipation (Shavuot) of the ethical, moral and ritual law. The Rabbi’s tell the story of a leave that is attached to the upper branch of a tree. She envies the leaves soaring overhead in the wind. “How I wish I could be released from the tree and fly in the wind,” she cries out. Her prayer is answered and she flies higher and higher, enjoy and exaltation. But the wind later dies down and she plummets lifeless to the ground. In her dying gasps she realizes, “I was truly free only when I was attached to the bow of the tree.” The Jew is emancipated not when he gains physical freedom (Passover), but only when he also has spiritual freedom (Shavuot), ethical, moral, intellectual and cultural emancipation through the guidance of the law, the teachings of the Torah. Like the leaf, we are truly free when we are attached to the tree.

Looking forward to a fun filled afternoon? So, nu, join us at Ellen Kippel’s home at 2PM for a Havurah Brunch. Please bring a dairy, fish or vegetarian dish to share. This is a no-pain, some gain fundraiser for B’nai Shalom at a meager $10 per person donation. Please call Ellen at 760-305-7114 or email her at Frizz9@cox.net to let her know if you plan to attend, how many in your party and what food item you plan to bring. Since Ellen lives in a gated community she has to put your name in at the front gate so that you will be able to get to her house. Please let her know who the driver will be.
