ObjectivesAfter the presentation you will be able to:
•Define in simple words what osteoporosis is
•Identify at least two risk factors for developing osteoporosis
•Mention at least two ways to prevent falls and fractures
Pre Test1. A risk factor of osteoporosis is:
a. ___ smoking b. ___ Being overweight
2. Treatments for osteoporosis include: a. ___ Use of medications and exercise b. ___ Use of a cane or walker
Pre Test
3. One risk factor for developing osteoporosis is:a. exerciseb. have a low calcium diet
4. To prevent falls it’s recommended to:a. wear slippers (flip flops)b. have eyes checked annually
Did you know…• Approximately 50% of all women over 50 years in the United States will have a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra (bones of the spine) during their lifetime (The North American Menopause Society, 2010). •Osteoporosis can occur at any age in both men and women but is more common among older women (NIH, 2011). •There is no cure for osteoporosis, but some measures can be taken to delay it.
• It is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to fracture.
• It occurs when the body fails to form new bone, or when too much old bone is reabsorbed by the body, or both.
What is osteoporosis?
• Some symptoms may not occur in the early stages of the disease.
• The symptoms in the advanced stage are:
Signs and Symptoms
Bone pain or tenderness (in the bone) Mild or frequent fracturesLoss of height over timeBack or neck pain due to fractures
of the bones of the spine Kyphosis or stooped posture,
also called "dowager's hump"
Risk factors for developing osteoporosis
• Age: Women over 50 and men over 70
• Gender: Women have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men
• Low levels of hormones: testosterone in men, estrogen in women
• Drinking alcohol
• Having relatives who have had osteoporosis
• Being thin and having a small build
• Smoke
• Lack of calcium and vitamin D in the diet
• Lack of physical activity
Risk factors for developing osteoporosis
How to know if I have Osteoporosis?
• There is evidence that uses X-rays and acoustic waves (sound) to measure the amount of calcium and other minerals in the bone, for
example:
– Computed Tomography (CT Scan) – radiation
– X-ray of the spine or hip fracture detection
– Bone Densitometry - is the most used
Treatment
The objectives of treatment for osteoporosis are:
• Control the pain associated with the disease
• Slow down or stop the bone loss process
• Preventing fractures with medicines that strengthen bone when necessary
• Minimizing the risk of falls that might cause fractures
Exercise
• It is recommended to exercise 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. This helps to strengthen the muscles and bones. It also reduces the chance of fractures in people with osteoporosis.
• What can you do? -Walk* -Climb stairs * -Lifts weights * -Dance *
* As long as your doctor has given the approval
Recommendations
• Your doctor may recommend a supplement that provides the calcium and vitamin D you need.
• This vitamin helps you absorb calcium.
• Consume at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day and 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D
•Almonds •Yogurt •Cheese •Sesame •Oranges•Low-fat milk •Green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli)•Dried herbs (oregano, rosemary, basil)
Follow a diet that gives you the right amount of calcium, vitamin D and protein!
Foods rich in vitamins and calcium
Recommendations for the health of your bones
• Do not smoke - smoking reduces the ability to regenerate bone before and after fracture.
• Reduce salt intake - salt increases calcium waste body through urine.
• No sodas – they contain phosphorus
– Even though your body needs this mineral, it reduces bone density in high amounts.
Recommendations for the health of your bones
• Limit alcohol consumption
– reduce to less than 16 oz. because it affects calcium absorption and reserves
• Reduce caffeine
• more than one cup of coffee a day reduces the absorption of calcium.
• It’s very important to prevent falls
• A simple fall can change your life
• The elderly are more prone to fractures due to falls
• Examine your vision annually
Fall Prevention
How I can keep from falling?
• Make sure you have good lighting in the house
• Electrical cords should not be lying on the floor on areas where you walk
• Put hand rails in the bathtub, toilet and both sides of the stairs so you can lean
Recommendations to prevent falls
•In the kitchen, place the items you use most within reach so that you can easily reach them •Wear shoes with non-slip soles •Avoid using "slippers”; they could make you stumble and you fall •Use proper shoes and equipment to help (cane, walker) •Get plenty of rest
Recommendations to prevent falls
• Apply heat or cold to the joints • This can help to cope with the pain in the
feet.
• Limit foods high in sodium
Recommendations to prevent falls
• Keep a healthy weight • Comply with your
medication therapy• Stay active • Visit your primary doctor
regularly • Keep good lighting in your
home.
•Strengthen your bones through exercise, a diet high in calcium (1,200 mg) and vitamin D (1000 IU)
•Remember, the key is prevention.
• If you have osteoporosis, the probability of a fracture is greater
• Therefore, it is important to prevent falls to avoid fractures
