Kleinfelder led the LEED Gold design for this BRAC-funded, fast-track Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC) in Middletown, CT. This ACEC award-winning design-build project, completed in 19 months, included a 164,000 square-foot AFRC and a 35,000 square-foot vehicle maintenance shop (VMS) on a challenging 42-acre site.

INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Kleinfelder evaluated the initial design for a three-story facility on a steeply sloping site with wetlands. Our architects created a four-story design, reducing the building footprint and minimizing excavation and disturbance to adjacent wetlands. This LEED Gold design included net zero storm water flows, renewable energy components, and efficient HVAC and building envelope designs.

FAST-TRACK BIM-BASED DESIGNKleinfelder led design charrette partnering sessions with 11 USAR and CTARNG companies and battalions, USACE, and the general contractor to determine end-user mission needs. We integrated design and construction staff from the initial conceptual design through construction using building information modeling (BIM) to coordinate design disciplines and construction trades. This helped avoid clash delays during construction, expedite the BRAC-mandated schedule, and enable the USAR and National Guard to occupy the 200,000 square-foot facility in just 19 months after Notice to Proceed.
