Kingdom Monera• Unicellular

prokaryotes• no organized nucleus

with a nuclear membrane

• lack mitochondria, lysosomes, Golgibodies

• have cell walls BUT are chemically different from cell walls of plants Examples: bacteria and blue-

green algae.

2

Bacterial MorphologiesRod = Bacillus Spherical = Coccus Spiral = Spirillum

Life on Mars??

• Early life or purely inorganic structures?• Filament? Bacilli?

Blue-green Algae

Blue green algae are now called cyanobacteria. They form “scum” on ponds. The are colonial in nature and are the forerunners of the green algae.

Kingdom Protista

• Unicellular • contains most organelles• some move & ingest bacteria• those that do not move use

photosynthesis• some have cell walls but

chemically different from plants

3

Green Algae Kingdom Fungi

• Unicellular or multicellular

• contain most organelles• must absorb food• some have cell walls but

they are chemically different than plants

• not motile

4

Kingdom Plantae• Unicellular or multicellular• contain most organelles• cell walls contain

cellulose• not motile• use photosynthesis• cells form tissues and

organs

Kingdom Animalia• Contain all organelles• no cell walls• no photosynthesis• motile• multicellular• ingestion• cells organized into tissues &

organs• have a nervous system
