Celebrate Korea! OnSaturday,October22,2011,theEastAsia
Institute(EAI)hostedSanAntonio’sInauguralKimchi
Festival.Thiseventwasmadepossiblethrough
collaborationwiththeKoreanAmericanAssociation
ofSanAntonio(KAASA)andtheConsulateGeneralof
theRepublicofKoreainHouston.Thiscelebrationof
Koreanfoodandculturewasattendedbyover400
people.
Thefestivitiesbeganat2:00p.m.andguestswereinvited
tovisitboothsthathadbeensetupbyboththeEastAsiaInstitute
andtheKoreanAmericanAssociationofSanAntonio.Through
games,artsandcraftactivities,andshortpresentations,the
participantswereabletogaininsightintoKoreanculture.Many
wereattractedtothecraftboothswheretheymadeKoreanfans
withcolorfulfeathers,KoreanandAmericanflagornaments,and

Program(TaLK)andEnglish
PrograminKorea(EPIK),
throughwhichEnglish‐speaking
studentsareabletoteach
EnglishinKorea.Onebooth
featuredUNESCOWorld
HeritageSitesinKoreaaswell.
Afterspendingtime
enjoyingthefair,guestswere
invitedtotheDenmanRoomto
heartheopeningremarks.

Koreans,suchasMichelleWie,
thefamousgolferandtheKoreanpopmusicgroup,Wondergirls.
Onceallofthewelcoming
remarkswerefinished,itwas
timefortheperformancesto
begin.Tokickoffthisportionof
thefestivities,TheSanAntonio
KoreanCommunitySchool
preformedtheTraditional
Koreanwayofgreeting.This
performancetaughtthe
audienceafewsimplegreetings
thatarestillusedtoday.
NextupwastheChanggo
Dance,presentedbytheKorean
AmericanCultureCenterofSan
Antonio.TheChanggoisan
hourglassshapeddrumthatis
themostwidelyplayedofall
Koreaninstruments.Oneside
hasabasssoundcalledKung
Pjon,whiletheoppositesideis
higherinpitchandiscalledCha
Pjon.Bothsidesaretunablein
relationtoeachother.Two
differentkindsofmallets
produceavarietyofsoundsthat
givetheimpressionthatafew
differentdrumsarebeingplayed
simultaneously.
SincetheChanggois
quitelightinweight,itis
effortlesstocarryanddance
with.Thisseamlessly
transitionedtotheModumbuk
Koreandance performance.
Modumbuk is a barrel shaped
drum with a round wooden body.
Both sides of the drum are
covered and the performer can

AmericanCultureCenterofSan
Antonio(KACC‐SA).
Afterbothdrum
demonstrations,KACC‐SA
introducedthefandance.This
particularstyleisoneofthemost
popularandappealingKoreanfolk
dances.Thedanceisusuallyperformedbyagroup
offemaleswithfoldingfansthathavefeathersat
theend.Thedancersopenandclosethefanstoa
foldingrhythm.Theclimaxiswhenthedancers
formabigflutteringflower.Thedancerswear
colorfulcostumessimilartothoseoncewornby
dancersoftheroyalcourt.
Thefinalperformanceofthedaywasa
sing‐a‐longwiththetraditionalKoreansong“ARi
Rang”ledbyB.J.YangfromKAASA.Yangsangita
coupleoftimeswithagroupofherstudents
beforeinvitingKoreanexchangestudentsfromUTSA
togouponstageandsingalongwiththem.Sheeven
invitedShahrzadDownlatshahitojoininaswellas
severalotherparticipantsfromtheaudience.
Whenalloftheperformanceswere
concluded,theKimchiportionoftheeventbegan.In
additiontothecontinuationofthefestivaland
boothactivities,theattendeeswereableto
enjoyvariousKimchiandKoreanfood
cateredbyIlSongGardenRestaurantand
KoreanaRestaurant.Thedishesprovided
were:Bulgogi(barbecuedbeef),KimchiBuchim
(Kimchipancake),JapChae(stirfriednoodleswith
vegetables),MiyukOieMuchim(seasonedseaweed
withcucumber),KongnamulMuchim(seasoned
yellowbeansprout),CheongpomukMuchim(mung

Whilethe
guestsenjoyed
thedeliciousfood,theywere
alsotreatedtoaKimchi
demonstrationsponsoredbytheIl
SongGardenRestaurant.Making
Kimchiisalongprocess.Alotofwork
hastogointomakingthispopular
sidedish.Thefermentingprocess
alonetakesatleasttwodaysto
complete.Although,mostpeople
wouldagreethattheeffortisworth
thewait.
Astheeventdrewtoaclose,
alloftheguestsseemedverypleased
withtheirexperiences.“Ithoroughly
enjoyedthefestival,”exclaimedone
youngparticipant,adding“Ilook
forwardtofutureevents!”Angelika
Rocha,aUTSAGrantand
ContractSpecialistalso
attendedthefestival.
“Ihadsuchawonderful
timelisteningtothe
speakers,watchingthe
wonderfulperformersin
theircolorful,distinct
traditionaldress,”shesaid.“I
watchedthefilmonhowto
makeKimchi.Itwasmyfirst
timetastingKimshiandIlikedit.The
foodwasdelicious!”
UTSA’sEastAsiaInstituteis proud to promote awareness,
appreciation and understanding of
East Asia in the Alamo City. We are
looking forward to organizing a bigger
Kimchi Festival with KAASA next
