Dear Kiwanis Friends,
at first let me send to you and your families the best wishes of all m e m b e r s o f t h e B o a r d o f t h e European Federation. May you all have a Happy and Healthy New Year 2013!
2 0 1 3 w i l l b e a n excep t iona l year : Kiwanis celebrates the 50th anniversary in
Europe. Seven European clubs were founded in that year 1963 and they are all alive. You will be reminded in the KI-EF update of the next month with a special edition for Vienna and Austria and in the following months the other celebrated clubs will follow with special histories and projects.
When you look at this update you have some main topics
Registrations for Vienna, Berlin and Vancouver are open. I recommend to registrate as soon as possible: It enables the persons who organize the events to be m o r e p r e c i s e i n t h e i r p l a n n i n g l i k e h o t e l accommodations, size of halls etc. And early registration brings financial advantage, e.g. registration fee for Vancouver is lower for “early birds”. For the
convention in Berlin early registration is crucial to be sure to get the hotel that was recommended.
Charity projects and expansion to Africa: please read the pages written by Sylvester Neal about his efforts to make Kiwanis better known in Africa and the outstanding charity project of our French Kiwanis Friends “Chirurgie Solitaire”.
International cooperation of Kiwanis Clubs: Celebration of the partnership between Zielona Gora in Poland and Frankfurt/Oder in Germany. Congratulations to both and best wishes for your future!
Election: KI Trustee Sjoerd Timmermans announces his candidacy for the office of Kiwanis International Vice-President – one reason more to go the International Convention in Vancouver. Sjoerd will certainly get the support of all European Kiwanians!
Dear Kiwanians, this is again an interesting edition of the KI-EF update. After you have read it please give us your feedback and send it to Francesco Valenti or me.
Kind regards
Ernst, KI-EF President 2012/13

Greetings Kiwanians,I want to wish each of you a happy 2013! This new year is full of promise and excitement for Kiwanis, as
we discover new ways to support Our Children, Their Future in Kiwanis communities around the globe. This summer, our 98th Annual Kiwanis International Convention will be in Vancouver. I hope you’ll be able to join us! Keep reading to find out more about this incredible destination and what you can expect during this year’s convention.
John Deighton is a legend in Vancouver Canada. With a barrel full of whiskey and a head full of big ideas, he found his way into town and opened a saloon that catered to those who had a thirst to build a diverse, multi-cultural new world.
John Deighton also talked a lot to his patrons, so much so he became known as "Gassy John" and the area surrounding his enterprise became known as Gastown.
Vancouver is a city presently known for a lot more than Gastown. It has natural beauty, and a cool summer climate with attractions like beaches and nearby rain forests. It has a thriving, modern and friendly culture that makes all people who visit feel welcome.
I can’t think of a more fitting place than Vancouver for our convention! After all, the fellowship of Kiwanians plays such an important part of the convention experience. It’s where we meet old friends, make new friends, and no doubt we will talk a lot when we express our views in our Friday business session. It's the place to be—to learn a lot and discuss all the latest happenings in Kiwanis.
During closing session, Sarah McLachlan will accept the 2013 World Service Medal for her dedication to music education. The Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver provides music education to underserved and at-risk youth at no cost. The school is dedicated to helping young people build community and find their voice.
The Midtown Men—the original Jersey Boys, will entertain us; gifted speakers will inspire us; and hundreds of members of Circle K International will walk with us to raise funds for The Eliminate Project.
And like those early patrons who were served by Gassy John at his well-established enterprise, Vancouver will be our chance to shape the future of the world we want to build.
I encourage you to register today and share with us the Kiwanis experience in Vancouver. And if you can, while you are enjoying a great meal in Gastown, raise your glasses and propose a toast
to the legendary Gassy John—that his enterprise will lift our spirits when we leave Vancouver so we can build a world filled with many more diverse and multi-cultural members who have big ideas to serve Our Children, Their Future.
Sincerely

Past International past president Sylvester Neil visit S. O. S. village in Kinshasa - Congo
I had the unique opportunity to visit the SOS Village near Kinshasa, Congo in
early 2012 with members of the Kiwanis Club of Kinshasa. This village houses about 100 children and provide basic education cost including housing. These kids would otherwise be in danger of abandonment on the streets. The Belguim-Luxembourg District is providing funding to help support this much needed cause.
I was most impressed with the quality of care and the expert staff who are dedicated to providing an opportunity for these kids to succeed and have a better life. But this would not likely be possible without the generosity and kindness of Kiwanians of the Belguim-Luxembourg District. Through the district foundation, Kiwanians have reached half-way around the world to make a difference in the lives of so many needy children. This is the kind of caring and sharing that makes me so proud to be part of this great organization.
I have had an opportunity to work with Kiwanis clubs in Africa over my seven years on the Kiwanis International board. I have found the need so
great, but with the help and partnership of others, these clubs help us address needs we could not address otherwise. If we continue our support of these clubs with projects like the SOS Village, we will further the mission of Serving the Children of the World. I am currently working as the KI Coordinator for all club in Africa.
Many of these clubs have been sponsored and serviced by nations who were once associated with Africa. We need more clubs in Europe and around the world to help us develop a partnership with these club. If you have an intertest, please send me a note.

A complementary project to the project ELIMINATE: a partnership with CHIRURGIE
SOLIDAIRE proposed by the District France Monaco
Kiwanis highlighted the materno-infantile morta l i ty bound to the te tanus in
underdeveloped countries, in particular in Africa. ELIMINATE is a beautiful project. The prevention and the vaccination are essential elements of a health policy in underdeveloped countries.
However there is another cause of death at birth. This one is linked to the impossibility to help the mother to facilitate the birth, making a caesarian when the child cannot be born in a natural way, because the mother is too slim, or the child too big, or for any other raison … In a rural hospital in the North of Ethiopia, there are no week unless an uterine break to be immediately operated to save the mother; and for the child, it is too late, he already died.
CHIRURGIE SOLIDAIRE is an association created eight years ago with the objective the training of competent surgical teams able to practise the emergency surgery far from urban areas. Its action is limited to Africa for the moment. It is not about a substitution surgery.
It is about a training by mentoring, sending to these small hospitals a complete team - composed by a surgeon, an anesthetist and a nurse of operating block - which will return repeatedly, until the on-the-spot team is able to take over for the emergency surgical gestures
such as the caesarian being at the same time the most frequent and the most necessary.
The partnership with CHIRURGIE SOLIDAIRE and the District FRANCE MONACO is a project very close to the heart of Pierre BOURGOIN, Governor 2012/2013.

After serving for three years on the Kiwanis International Board as Trustee, I have decided to run for the position of vice-president. The most important reason is that I want to lead this great organization into a new era. The future can be g r e a t a n d b r i g h t w h e n w e t a k e t h e following policy-points into consideration:
Rejuvenation and growth, is desperately needed in order to survive.
I also want all Kiwanians to be PROUD again of our Kiwanis-family! Proudness will be the keyword for the future, because when you are proud you will talk about it many times and that will make recruiting new members easier.
Vision - Leadership - Passion
I strongly believe that I can play an important role in developing a policy which that will rejuvenate our Kiwanis family. We need to stop our declining membership by making Kiwanis more attractive to everyone. I also believe that our message has to be clear, short and simple in order to reach as many people as possible.
Since my retirement, I have dedicated my time to Kiwanis, first as lieutenant governor, then and as distinguished governor in 2008-2009, followed by international trustee for 2010-2013. I have strong skills, which are in the field of marketing, public -relations, general management, communication, strategic planning, motivation and policy making that will help Kiwanis grow.
As I traveled my entire active working life all over the world, I also offer Kiwanis a clear and realistic global view, dealing with of all the different cultures in our family/ and network. My management style is leading by example, consensus and always finding a way to create compromises and motivating all leaders involved. It is very important that I am a good listener!

In May of 2006, when the Kiwanis Clubs from Frankfurt/Oder (Germany)
and Zielona Gora(Poland) signed an agreement for collaboration, the description
of that common work was fairly general. The main idea was certainly to help children. First project was called ‘Kiwanis Culture Day’, and our specific intention was a one-day meeting of children from Poland and Germany, one year in our country, other – in Germany. During these meetings the culture of these two countries was presented through shared play. Certainly we had many doubts, the most serious of which was the following: would not only the children, but additionally we ourselves, be able to break the language barrier? Six years have passed... and I think that the idea has taken off. Jointly we have organized 12 meetings for our charges — each year children meet twice. A greater emphasis than was initially planned has been placed on play and physical culture. Yet this has always been play with a goal. During meetings in Zielona Gora the children have already had activities in the theater, the ethnographic museum, and a croft; they have learned viticulture tradition of the region and its music. In Frankfurt, a greater stress was placed on physical culture and interpersonal activities — e.g. children was building a boat and they shared sailing trip on the lake Helensee. All these meetings was dedicated to collaboration while overcoming difficulties.
12 meetings is certainly a lot. In short summary, it is difficult to describe them all in one sequence. All of them were certainly a blast for the kids and for us. The effects cannot be calculated in monetary terms: you won’t find it mentioned in this article that we managed to raise however many Euro. However I believe, that our work is based on unmeasurable values, such as forming the views of the neighboring country in the eyes on the youngest children, or awakening an interest in a foreign friend’s language. Besides this, we are building a positive image of Kiwanis in the youth who we hope will one day follow in our footsteps. Additionally, though this contact a new project has been born. We have decided to also meet in adult groups. Thanks to this, Kiwanians from Zielona Góra have seen the beautiful Spreewald, sailed barges on the Oder, and… taken golf lessons. We’ve participated in the yearly Christmas Market and in charity banquets in Frankfurt. However one looks at it we meet more often with the Frankfurt Club than with any from our own country. I hope this is only the beginning...

P.S. Next year the European Convention will take place in Berlin, and certainly we won’t miss it! But right now, we can already offer an invitation to Zielona Gora for the DiPF Polish Convention, which will be held September 28th, 2013. Note
that Zielona Gora is only 150 km east from Berlin. It's a beautiful and friendly city - you have my word and you may convince yourselves of this coming to visit us!
