Non-Traditional CareersSTEM

• A nontraditional career is ANY occupations in which women or men comprise 25% or less of its total employment.

– Look at the handout – put an M or F on the line next to each profession – look at your choices then compare/contrast with you partner

Why is this important?

1. Nontraditional careers for one of the genders – such as information technology, nursing, criminal justice, early education and engineering often experience a labor shortage, so there is high demand for skilled employees in those occupations

2. Typically people who choose nontraditional occupations enjoy a greater job satisfaction because they are working in fields they have a genuine interest in.

3. Research on work environments find that a diverse workforce can be “more innovative, productive, and creative than a non-diverse workforce”

4. Trailblazing women who work in nontraditional fields can expect lifetime earnings of 150 percent more than comparable women in the traditional female occupation.

Why don’t females in Utah choose these professions?

Look at your non-traditional careers worksheet

Discuss some of the reasons with your partner.
