CCSS Connection: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L; 3.4, 4.4, 5.4, 6.4

Overview: The KIM chart is a simple strategy for teaching vocabulary words and new concepts.

A KIM chart has three columns:

K-Key Word or ConceptI- Definition of the word or information that matches the key ideaM-Memory clue, a picture or visual representation of the concept

Procedure: The key idea is a new vocabulary word or concept that students need to learn. The information column is the actual definition or a detailed explanation of the concept. Students can alternatively restate the definition in their own words. It may also be something more technical for certain content areas. The memory clue is what students will picture in their minds in order to remember the word. Students create a simply drawing that reflects the meaning of the word or concept. For some words a cartoon speech bubble can add additional clarity to the drawing.
