PEEKA sustainable concept.
Background The “Program for Energy Efficiency in Kho Khao (PEEK)” is financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the International Climate Protection Initiative. The initiative supports climate protection projects worldwide in developing, newly industrializing and transition countries in order to contribute effectively to emission reductions and adaptation to climate change. As part of its long‐term energy policy Thailand aims to boost energy efficiency measures and increase renewable energy as part of its energy mix. Within the tourism industry, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has been financially supporting the UNWTO Consulting Unit on Biodiversity and Tourism for Tsunami Affected Countries which provides advice and accompanies the reconstruction of the tourism industry in the affected countries.
Objective The overall aim of the project is to significantlyreduce greenhouse gas emissions from the hotelindustry in Kho Khao Island by means of innovative and replicable solutions for energy efficiency andrenewable energy. PEEK is part of further efforts to create a modeldestination for sustainable tourism in Kho KhaoIsland. Phase 1:
Data collection and first implementation of initial energy efficiency measures.
Phase 2:
Structural measures for energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and implementation of a feasibility study for the potential of a local independent renewable energy electricity system.
Phase 3:
