5 Choices• 5 choices all work on different literacy skills

• Letting students chose what they are doing as long as they do all 5 gives students:• Felling of control• Responsibility• Accountability• Motivation

Read to self• Expectations of the students

• Students get to pick a spot around the room to read independently.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to conference with students about what they are reading OR do small reading groups.

Read to someone• Expectations of the students

• Students get to pick a spot around the room to take turns reading to a partner.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students interact etc. with others.

Listen to reading• Expectations of the students

• Students listen to a tape or CD of a book while following along to the story.

Word work• Expectations of the students

• Students work with different manipulatives to practice words, letters, etc.

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students are doing with letter, sight words, spelling, or whatever you are working on as a class.

Work on writing• Expectations of the students

• Students practice what they have already learned .

• Gives teacher the opportunity to do small reading groups OR see how students are doing with letter, sight words, spelling, or whatever you are working on as a class.

Discussion• From the 5 choices:

Good fit books

Based off of reading level• Reading to learn

Based off of interests• Reading for fun

BOTH are equally important!

Students need to learn that books have different purposes and when it is appropriate for each purpose.

Discussion• Thinking about good fit books:

• Do you already allow students to have these choices? How so?

• Do you already teach about good fit books? How?
