From The Chief Rabban
A. Paul Pabón & Lady Karen
Good day Ladies and Nobles. October, was yet, another great month… let’s see, that make ten
months in a row and I believe it is going to continue through the year! Not all tasks performed
by your Chief Rabban involve our Temple and it is not always fun. This was the case during the
first part of this month.
On Saturday, October 14th the month started rather somber as your Chief Rabban was asked to
act as Master of Escurial Lodge No. 7, in Virginia City, during a Masonic Service for our fallen
Noble, Eric Madison. The service was beautiful and many said it was the best Masonic service
they had ever experienced. Although the service is a solemn occasion, it does bring some solace
to know our Brother and Noble is enjoying the fruits of his labors in the quarries with the Great
Architect of the Universe and closure was had by the family.
On October 19, it was back to work at the Temple for a meeting with Paul Cline from Argenta
Advertising regarding next year’s Circus. The meeting was attended by Josh Lantz, Nathan
Digangi, Gene Fox, Lisa Miolini (Sands Resort), Paul Cline and myself. The purpose of this
meeting was to “trim the fat” from the $30,772 budget that was granted Argenta Advertising
and to utilize those tactics that worked and discard those tactics which did not. This meeting
started as all negotiations do, with Argenta Advertising stating there was no fat and all efforts
produced fruit. Your team was able to trim $11,000 from Argenta Advertising’s budget as well
as reallocated responsibilities from Argenta Advertising to both Nathan Digangi and Lisa
Miolini. All in all, a great meeting and cost savings.
October 21, Your Chief Rabban and Acting First Lady attended “Western Silver Daze”, at John
Ascuaga’s Nugget. What a great time was had with all of the Daughters of the Nile from the
southwest region. The event started with a most delicious luncheon, followed by a murder
mystery involving three separate murders and ending with a marketplace held by the Daughters
of the Nile. I loved the lunch, I love a good mystery and Lady Karen represented us well in the
shopping department.
October 22 – 24, your Chief Rabban was off to Laughlin, Nevada for the Colorado River Fall
Festival. For those of you who do not know, this is a festival in which York Rite Degrees are
conducted by perhaps the best Masonic ritualists I have ever seen. There were thirty-one (31)
candidates from Nevada, California, New Mexico and Arizona. These degrees culminate in the
Order of the Temple, or Knights Templar degree (32nd Degree Mason). We should all be proud
of Noble Terry Hurt (Kerak) or rather, Sir Knight Terry Hurt, for completing all degrees and
Orders.
October 25 was a speed run back to Reno as your Chief
Rabban did not want to miss the “Lady and the Tramp”
dinner at Kerak. Whew! Made it in time to help Acting
First Lady Karen and Lady Joy decorate for the dinner.
The dining room was made to look like and old Italian
restaurant with Italian music, red checkered table cloths
and spaghetti center pieces with red and green grapes. I
love it when you can eat the decorations.
The evening started as all do with social hour followed by our Italian Assistant Rabban, Cody
(The Gumba) Conway cooking us a most spectacular dinner. All I can say is “bravissimo”
Cody and “Brava” to the Rainbow Girls who made sure all had much to eat and your Chief
Rabban had some of that delicious tiramisu.
As this was “Lady and the Tramp” night many of our more romantic couples just could not help
themselves acting out the evening.
During dinner the 4H Club presented the Temple with a much needed power washer to say
“Thank you” for the use of the Temple for their events.
And last, but surely not least, The Acting First Lady raised $325.00 for her cerebral palsy
project. Thank you dear Nobles for contributing to this most worthy cause.
The Stated Meeting was well attended and there were two items brought up of particular interest
to all. The first was our finances are doing well with an increase of a little over $5000.00 for our
first month with Raymond James Financial Advisor. The second was a reminder by one of our
Nobles that 10% of our dues is to go towards improvements to the Temple. I will assure all that
this will be budgeted according to this rule and we all will be seeing the much needed
improvements to our Temple early next year.
The month was not over yet as on October 28th we had a most impressive turn-out for the
Nevada Day Parade, in Carson City. The day started early with a pancake breakfast at Carson
Lodge No.1 at 6:00a.m. Then it was the usual hurry up and wait as we all lined-up at 9:00a.m.
for a 12:15p.m. step off into the parade. Well, if I did my math right, that means we had a little
over 3 hours to decorate our rigs, eat donuts and drink some special…ahem…coffee that was
brought by Noble Scott Thiel. Thanks for the coffee, Scott… sure makes time fly!
Well, that’s it for October, but let me remind you all
that in November, the eleventh month, on the
eleventh day, at the eleventh hour, at the eleventh
minute, the Veteran’s Day Parade will kick off in
Reno. We have not attended this parade for many
years, so it’s time to call reveille to all Shriner
veterans and all Shriner veteran’s supporters and join
in this parade. I will guarantee the “Over-The-Hill
Gang” will be there in force and throw the glove
down to all clubs and units.
Looking forward to November and looking forward to seeing all of you,
Paul
Kerak Shrine “Acting” First Lady’s Message November 2017
By Lady Karen Pabón
First Lady’s Project – Assistance to the Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy
Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Northern California
Greetings to all and Happy Fall I don’t have the words to express my appreciation for all of your support to the “Acting” First Lady. And that appreciation extends to your generosity and support of the First Lady’s Project. We have deposits to the Project totaling over $13,000. That will provide for the welcome process and total child exam of ten new cerebral palsy patients. In addition to the donations received from the chance to win game, we received a large donation in memory of Paul Fulstone and Wayne Loganbill. And speaking of the First Lady’s Project, we just confirmed use of the Ballroom at the Sands Regency for the 2nd Annual Kerak Shrine Kraft Faire Supporting the Kids. The Kraft Faire will be on March 24, 2018. We hope you will all spread the word and plan to attend.
The October Lady and the Tramp dinner was a success with Cody Conway preparing delicious spaghetti, meatballs and three types of sauces, salad and garlic bread. Some couples even had their picture taken while kissing “Lady and the Tramp” style…on each end of a spaghetti.
In addition to Cody’s cooking, Louis at Johnny’s Italian Restaurant made and donated the Tiramisu to top off the meal. It would be wonderful to show our gratitude by patronizing Johnny’s at 4245 W. 4th Street in Reno. After dinner, while the Nobles attended their meeting, the Ladies received a self-defense lesson to help protect them from those “Tramps” out there. Jim and Michel Overton of Damsels in Defense taught us some tips on being prepared and aware of our surroundings. We practiced throat strikes and being assertive. They also showcased items like pepper spray and Tasers for sale. Anyone interested in these products may contact Michel at Phone: (775)772-0125 | Email: michelgto57@gmail.com
October 28th was the celebration of Nevada Day and what a celebration it was. Kerak had a nice showing in the parade which was said to be the best Nevada Day parade ever. While at the parade, another $40 was donated to the First Lady’s Project. Wow!
The holidays and Christmas are right around the corner. We will have an ornament exchange for the Ladies’ program at the December meeting. Please bring a wrapped ornament to play the exchange game.
REMINDER: Precision Diamonds at 4145 S. Virginia Street is donating all proceeds from watch battery replacements to the First Lady’s Project. Please take your watches in need of batteries there and tell them Paul and Karen sent you. A CALL FOR HELP – as we plan for the upcoming year, I encourage everyone, especially the Ladies, to provide input and suggestions for dinner themes, ladies activities and fundraising ideas. I also welcome anyone’s help in preparation and set-up for the dinners. Please contact me via email, kjpabon@aol.com or phone/text, 775-722-4133. As a future fundraiser for the First Lady’s projects, we are looking at compiling and selling a Kerak Shrine Ladies Cookbook. Please send recipes to Samantha Conway at sam@udella.com. Here’s the updated Ladies’ calendar. We are working diligently on next year’s. Nov 15 Chief Rabban and Chief Rabban’s Lady’s night, no stated
meeting, just fun, fun, fun. Dec 3 Christmas party for Shrine Kids. Please come join us to celebrate with our
Shrine kids. There will be food, activities and Santa.
Dec 20 Christmas prime rib dinner.
This dinner will also be in recognition of the Hospital drivers; the Rainbow girls; and the Temple’s staff. The ladies will have an ornament exchange. The FUNdraiser – TBD

Kerak Shrine Golf Club
A Social Club That Plays Golf
We were back at the Napa Sonoma restaurant on South Virginia for our October monthly meeting. The long
table by the wine wall where we normally meet was full with 15 members and wives. Plus, 2011 Kerak Shrine
Past Potentate Andy Anderson and his Lady Sharon were there as our guests.
It was late in the golfing season to be discussing anything other than the upcoming two-day Club Championship
tournament and the trip to Mesquite in November, and too early to discuss our plans for the 2018 season.
In Memorium: It is with great sadness that we say farewell to one of our golfing brothers – Willie Aydelotte.
He loved the game of golf and was a member of the golf club in years past. Willie was an outstanding golfer in
his earlier years and a fun person to play with. So long, Willie! Hit ‘em long and straight, and have fun on
those beautiful heavenly golf courses.
October 20th was the 2nd day of our Club Championship at Empire Ranch golf course in Carson City on a cold
day and a very challenging golf course, to say the least. The first day of the Championship was at Eagle Valley
golf course in Carson and was played either on Tuesday the 17th or on the 19th thus giving us old golfers a
break.
The winner of the two-day tournament was Frank Omboli with a two-day net total of 136 awarding him the title
of “2017 Club Champion.” The next three places were Dan Venters, Bob Yturiaga and Klaus Wohlgemuth.
Closest-to-the-Hole winners for the two days were Bob Yturiaga, Klaus Wohlgemuth, Jim Walsh and Joe
Crowdis. Frank will have his name engraved on the Club Champion plaque displayed in the Kerak temple.
The Club Championship tournament was also the final tabulations for the 2017 Club Point System to determine
the “2017 Golfer of the Year.” This year’s winner with the most points accumulated from January to October
was Ed Smith. Larry Snearly was a very close second with Dan
Venters in third. Ed will have his name engraved on the Golfer of the
Year plaque displayed on the wall in the Kerak temple. See the club
website for a complete member point listing.
Following play on the Empire course, we all met in the clubhouse
restaurant for libations, awards and camaraderie. Even though the
grill had closed at 2:00, we still had fun with liquid refreshments and
chips. John Reed awarded two brand new putters that were donated
to the Club to our two winners, Ed Smith and Frank Omboli.
Next Monthly Meeting – Napa Sonoma – Thursday – November 9th
The 2017 Kerak Shrine golfing season for the Club is over and now we’re looking for Shriners who would
enjoy playing some fun golf with fellow Shriners for the 2018 season beginning in March. If interested, contact
President John Reed, 825-2557, john.w.reed@charter.net, or Secretary Tom Buntin, 827-3930,
nitnub@sbcglobal.net.
All pertinent golf club information is on the Kerak Golf Club website – http://webpages.charter.net/jwreed, then
click on the fez and check it out.
News from the Karavaners Unit
Karavaner’s October 2017 Newsletter
Our last dinner meeting for this year was held at Red’s Old 395
Restaurant in Carson City on October 2nd and was hosted by Andy and
Sharon Anderson. The surprise gifts from Betty Thornton were a
matching pair of oven mitts. Sharon Anderson laid out some items
that would be useful to Karavaner’s as well. You never know what
surprises you may get at these meetings. We are now going to be
meeting for the colder months of November through April for
luncheons instead of dinners.
Discussions were held and ideas were submitted for having more trips
next year. One suggestion was to follow the Potentate on some of his
visits. This idea seemed to be well received as well as maybe a trip
that would allow us to visit the Children’s hospital. More information
will follow as ideas are worked out.
We celebrated Andy Anderson’s birthday which was October third in
the usual manner and the servers thought it was hilarious.
The next meeting will be held at Pho’s chopsticks in Gardnerville at
12:00 noon it is located at 1329 US highway 395 North, Gardnerville,
NV and is hosted by Bill and Cindy Earnhardt.
Respectfully submitted,
Dwain Thornton, Wagon Master

HONOR OUR VETERANS
FOR MUCH TOO LONG WE HAVE NOT PARTICIPATED IN THE VETERAN’S DAY PARADE. WHEN I ASKED WHY, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ENOUGH INTEREST. I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE WHEN SO MANY OF OUR NOBLES SERVED THIS GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS. YOU EITHER SERVED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO SERVED. THIS BEING THE CASE, KERAK SHRINE TEMPLE WILL PARTICIPATE IN THIS PARADE EVEN IF WE ONLY HAVE ONE ENTRANT. THE “OVER THE HILL GANG” WILL BE OUT IN FORCE SHOWING OFF SOME AMERICAN OFF ROAD VEHICLES… WHAT COULD BE MORE AMERICAN THAN OLD JEEPS, A FEW CHEVYS, FORDS, AND YOU NAME IT… WE WILL HONOR OUR VETERANS. THE PARADE MARCHES THROUGH THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN RENO AND HONORS THOSE WHO HAVE SACRIFICED TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY. ALL GAVE SOME – SOME GAVE ALL! THE PARADE WILL TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2017, RAIN OR SHINE. IT STARTS AT APPROXIMATELY 11:20AM AND ENDS BETWEEN 1:00PM-2:00PM. THE PARADE GOES NORTH ON VIRGINIA STREET FROM THE VIRGINIA STREET BRIDGE AT 1ST STREET AND MARCHES NORTH TO 5TH STREET. THE PARADE IS PRECEDED BY A TRADITIONAL OPENING CEREMONY AT THE VIRGINIA STREET BRIDGE. THE CEREMONY BEGINS AT 11:11AM (THE 11TH MINUTE OF THE 11th HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH) WITH A FLY BY AND CONCLUDES WITH A WREATH TOSSING AT 11:20AM.

His labors here below have taught him to divest his heart and conscience of the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting his mind as a living stone for that spiritual building -- that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
THE GREATEST GIFT
When you think of the greatest gift you ever received, what comes to mind? Were
you lucky enough to receive a pony when you turned eight? Or maybe you got that
bicycle you were wanting so much. Was it a special present you received on your
birthday, or maybe on your anniversary?
I know, it was your wedding day or the birth of your first born, your second born,
etc... Some say it is getting recognition or that job you were seeking or maybe a
promotion.
When it comes to gift giving or receiving, there sure are a lot of choices that can
make “the greatest gift”. But is there really a “greatest” gift? … Well, yes there is. It is
your time.
Time is the greatest gift you can give or receive. You see, you only have so much of
it. And not only that, no one really knows how much of it they have.
You can make more money, but you can't make more time. When you give
someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life you'll never get back.
Your time is your life and giving someone a part of your life is giving someone the
best of you…the greatest gift.
I wish to give a very special thank you to our Shriner Hospital Drivers and Co-
drivers who continually give the greatest gift, and not only give, they give to perfect
strangers, with no expectation of anything in return. They selflessly give the greatest
gift to our Shriner children who need rides to receive their treatment at our
hospitals. Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much. I have asked a few of you
why you give so much of what is your most precious and valuable commodity… I get
the same answer every time… Paul, have you ever seen their smiles?
Our Temple is always in need of more drivers and co-drivers. If you can give the
Greatest Gift, please call Magda at the Temple (856-3330) to be placed on the list of
those who give and give and give.
Thank you,
Paul
