Summer Reading

It all starts one afternoon when Nancy’s father, Caron Drew, comes home from work with a tall women named Mrs. Merriam. She had come to visit Nancy and her father who was a lawyer to talk about a mystery.

Mrs. Merriam said that she lives on the coast of Waterford and a long time ago an uncle of hers gave her a collection of very fine library books. Since she had a small house and there were hundreds of books her husband told her that she should sell some of them. So, she went into town to ask Mr. Willis Basswood who owned a bookshop and art gallery if he could sell them. He agreed and said that he would take 25% of each sale as his fee.

She continued to say that everything was going well until she stopped getting her receipts. When she asked Mr. Basswood why, he replied that they weren’t selling but she thinks that he is keeping all the money for himself.

• The next morning Nancy and her two friends, Bess and George went with Mrs. Merriam to the Waterford Yacht Club to help her with the mystery. Since Mr. Drew was afraid that Nancy would run into trouble, he advised her to wear a disguise and go as Miss Debbie Lynbrook.

At the yacht club, Nancy had another mystery on her mind. From what she knew, there was marble statue in front of the club and it had been stolen. The statue belonged to the owner of the club and resembled his wife. Many locals said that sometimes you could hear the statue whisper but not make out what she said.

Miss Lynbrook had decided that she better get to work on both cases. The next morning she went to do some sleuthing over at Mr. Basswoods shop. She agreed that it was indeed a nice shop and thought that she would be able to learn more if she applied for a job.

Later that night, George, Bess, and Miss Lynbrook went out hunting for the missing statue. Since they knew it was made of marble, they thought that it would be heavy and couldn’t be moved very far unless they had a truck. So, they started looking in the shed behind the yacht club.

The shed was full of cobwebs, broken tools, and garden equipment. Bess thought it was a waste of time and that they should go. Miss Lynbrook ignored her comment and made her way to the back corner of the shed. Hidden by debris, she found a marble figure that looked like the exact one missing.

The next day at work Miss Lynbrook noticed that many books were being sold from Mrs. Merriam’s collection. She wondered if today was just a busy day or if Mr. Basswood was really lying and keeping all the money.

Later that day when Miss Lynbrook was driving home from work, she noticed a barn that had all kinds of statues surrounding it for sale. She decided that she should stop and look. When she found a replica of the missing statue ….

I really enjoyed reading The Whispering Statue by Carolyn Keene. There was always something new happening and it’s a great book for a long airplane or car ride. You are determined to read it and find out how it ends. I would recommend this book to someone who likes mysteries, exciting books, and adventures. After you read one book in the Nancy Drew series, you are determined to read the next.
